I said I love Tom Cruise.
I like the newer action.
Yeah.
Like Tom.
[laughs] I still like the Westerns.
Kevin Costners and stuff like that.
Oh, Kevin Costner.
Yeah.
But not Tom Cruise?
Im not a fan of Tom Cruise, no.
Mom gets that honor all to herself.
[Light piano music] Norms Video was started in December of 1983 by my parents, Norm and Kay Ullom.
Thats why its called Norms Video.
They started it in Elizabeth.
Dad had a big repair shop up there.
We had some extra room up in the front.
People were asking about movies, and we had a few, but we started getting into it more and more.
It went crazy.
Within three months it had made its money back.
I was about the first one to start renting movies, because they never had that before, no one had it.
Theyd have to go to Castle Rock or Parker to purchase the movies that we had them for rent.
It opened down here probably March of ‘87.
This is Memphis, and he is our store mascot.
And hes gorgeous, huh?
And he knows everybody, let me tell ya.
We didnt put DVDs down here for a long time.
Oh thats right, we didnt.
So, it was mostly VHS.
[static] [rock music] When we started buying the newer movies, we would buy them in DVD, and we still had the VHS out there.
We just kind of transitioned everybody very slowly over to DVD.
Its a whole lot easier dealing with DVDs than it was VHS.
They are a lot easier to store.
And then we couldnt get people to rewind them, and so youre running them through the rewinder.
[VHS tape ejecting] [static] [sighs] I never really expected it to be a booming business.
A lot of the business around here are just fly-by-nights, or a “lets give it a try” thing.
But were here, and were offering a service, and they seem to like it.
What kind of movie you got today?
You can go down to, like, Dollar General and buy whatever movies you want.
But they want to come in and talk to you, they dont want to stand there in rent-a-machine in the freezing cold.
Because theyll come in and theyll say, you know, “Have you seen the new ‘Horizon with Kevin Costner?” And were honest.
“Yeah, its really good, but Kevin Costner wasnt in it enough.” [Laughs] I love Calhan.
Its a great little community, and thats what keeps us going.
It really is.
And I like the nostalgic part of it.
You know, weve been in business for a long time, why give up now?
