[Bell Rings] So do you want to trade two cards with me?
[Music Plays] The maker movement is just a really interesting way for young people and people in general, to get involved with science and technology and arts advancement.
This is an idea that I came up with.
It's an iPad holder.
It's going to be able to stick to a wheelchair.
They're making quadcopters and 3D printers.
You can make things that can help other people and entertain other people.
After we finish, the model on cardboard will then make it on acrylic or wood.
I think I'm going to make a difference in people's lives.
They're sewing clothes and creating games.
I just like making stuff.
There's a sense of exploration that we've lost since the time of Da Vinci.
They're making the world a safer and more interesting place.
Making a sort of fundamental to being human.
People have started to really look at making and hands on education in a new way.
It teaches me, just to us all my knowledge to my potential Knowledge and potential, both are key to people known as makers.
You can make all kinds of things.
Robots to cop houses.
Look what I just made!
These are four young makers making a mark in Pittsburgh.
This is The Maker Movement!
Try this.
Try the switch.
Because that's very cool.
I connected this.
It's looking at how technology and the do it yourself movement kind of have bumped up against each other.
And how kids and families make things together.
I think there had been such an emphasis on technology and STEM that now we're saying, well, you know what?
There's more!
[Music Plays] If you can make something, I think you can feel that you can understand the world.
So making is a movement that's at the intersection of old and new technologies.
It really touches on all kinds of STEM learning opportunities like science, technology, engineering, art and math.
But it has its own unique flavor as well.
I feel that we have been making all our lives as human beings, but after things in the digital realm have gotten more and more complex, people started to revert back to hands on working, building things with their hands, tinkering, playing, using different types of tools.
It's the way that we build our identity.
So you have to make this circuit.
Pittsburgh is a hotbed of making culture.
And there's a good reason why the maker movement is not just in the children's museum, in schools.
You'll find it in so-called maker spaces, like a symbol in Garfield.
It's happening in high tech places like the tech shop in East Liberty and CMU create Lab, more modest sites like the Bible Center Church in Homewood, also libraries and in people's homes.
Jane Werner first learned about making back in 2009.
I went to the Baker Fair in San Mateo, California and I was completely blown away.
And that was kind of the start of the children's museum experimenting with a maker space.
So makeup began as an idea in 2010.
We started playing with the idea and we got together a bunch of really wonderful partners because we had a lot of experience with designing interactive experiences with physical objects for for young audiences, but we really didn't have a lot of experience with the digital realm.
And in October of 2011, we opened this space.
You know, this is a great activity to do at home.
Go to goodwil and buy an old CD player for $1.
Take it apart all afternoon, see what still works.
Rebuild it into something else.
It was also the first that we started to think about having a Maker Faire.
So two years later, we did our first mini Maker Faire, and then we did a second mini Maker Faire.
We took a year off to kind of really figure out how to do a very large one, and that's where we are right now, and we're having our first full scale Maker Faire.
Very exciting.
We have over 250 makers coming, just all ages, all races, all genders.
[Music Plays] How are you doing with that?
Kicking off Pittsburgh's first ever full scale Maker Faire was the guru of making, a California named Dale Dougherty.
Have you got the light to light up?
Dale came up with the idea of maker fairs and introducing making to the public through his magazine.
About 11, 12 years ago, I came up with the idea fo a magazine, and I named it make, and I really wanted to be kind of a DIY projects magazine that included technology and kind of fun, cool projects that you might do.
Kind of was a reinvention of popular science and Popular Mechanics from maybe the early 20th century, and the spirit of it was like, you could do all these things.
Isn't it fun?
The magazine was a success from the start.
Dale was fascinated by the makers he was meeting, and he wanted to share that.
The intent was to make people more capable of doing things that really come out of their own mind.
And that led me to thinking about an event to bring makers together.
And with my team, we kind of thought, well, let's reinvent the county fair.
You know, instead of pigs and pies, we're going to have rockets and robots.
[Gears Churring] Keep going out and we want to make it fun.
We want to make it family oriented and just showcase the maker who often are working in private and bring them out in public and let them talk to you.
And for me, it was to create a conversation with makers to be able to not just see the things they make, but talk to them, because the thing that was overriding to me was their passion, their enthusiasm, and that's infectious.

These passionate young makers shared some of their creations at Maker Faire.
This one I bought.
Ceu Gomez Fauk is 14 years old, a ninth grader at Pittsburgh Cafe, and has been a maker nearly half of his life.
At Maker Faire, he demonstrated his latest creations.
I'm here to show off my project that I've been working on at my house.
It's called Mini Racing Quadcopter.
[Drone Noises] Well, I'm sure we've all heard about drones on the news.
It's a little helicopter with four rotors that flies, and what it does is it takes a video and sends it back to me at my ground station, and from there I watch it and I fly it as if I were in the cockpit of the aircraft.
Ceu has lots of dreams and began making an earnest at his home in Squirrel Hill when he was very little.
Okay, so I decided to build a 3D printer.
The way it works is this has you build a model in this little environment here, and that sends it sends the model to this projector, which then beams an image down onto this build plate, and it cures a little layer of liquid that's on the plate.
So you can make anything you want, whatever you can dream up and model.
My first project was an umbrella that opened up and blocked the way to anybod who was trying to enter my room.
Never ended up working, but I burned out an AC motor with it and then I got interested in electronics.
I tried to build a mars rover once.
Feely fun.
All these different projects over the years that just kind of me learning and burning stuff out.
I took things apart with a passion.
I read all the make magazines, and I started to build up knowledge about what this maker movement is, what to make something.
It's just a joy to complete and to know that you built this and have other people give you feedback or comments or praise, and then also just to be able to design something that's wholly your own, not something that you bought from a store, something that you can modify all aspects of it.
[Music Plays] I am 17 years old and I am a senior at Seneca Valley High School.
I created a game called Letter Together, and the object of the game is to see who can spell their word the fastest.
Abby Valentine really puts her heart into her creations, especially the one she's demonstrating today at Maker Fair.
To start off, every player gets five letter cards, and then they get to pick one word card.
And to play the game, you have to try to spel your word with the letter cards.
Whoever spells their word first we'll say letter together and ring the bell.
My game helps younger children learn how to spell words while having a good time playing the game.
I want to show off my game at Maker Faire a little bit, and maybe tell people more about my game and get suggestions from other makers.
I started it at the end of last school year, like the beginning of summer, and I've been working on it all summer.
I had a rough prototype.
The cards weren't the best condition, and then when I took graphic arts this year, I decided to make it a little bit more permanent and nicer.
So I've been working in that clas to make it to where it is today.
Abby found her passion and graphic design and her inspiration from her own family.
I have a lot of younger cousins at home, and I always made crafts for them to do at celebrations, and they really like doing that, so I tried to incorporate my passion for designing stuff and make a game that we could all play together and have fun.

Abby might have started at home.
I decided to try to draw my famil and make our own Christmas card.
But now her creation are out there for many to enjoy.
This year for school, I joined Yearbook Club and they asked me if I could design a shirt for Yearbook Club to wear at the homecoming parade.
My parents are really supportive of my making.
They don't know much about art or design, so they're a little shaky on, like if it's going to work or not.
But they think it's turning out really well and it's a good experience.

While the maker movement is about the physical creating with your hands and your head, it's also about tackling problems and finding solutions.
There's Pittsburgh in a different light.
Mari, is that all the pollution that is pollution?
[Music Plays] These makers are fifth graders at the Propel School in Hazelwood, and they're working together for a cause.
Our group is called propeller Hazelwood.
Eric's Florida Nate Ewell is here representing his class.
This is spec.
It measures air quality around you.
When you measure it, it's going to monitor it and give you a color.
So there's about seven colors.
Right now we are in Pittsburgh.
And the air quality right now is 380.
We are still good but it will go up more.
Propel science instructo director Kristin Golomb explains how what the students are doing is making.
Because the students are the voice of the project, they are making and creating.
What's going to come of this data.
They're going to make a solution.
They're going to try to solve a problem.
If there is a problem and they're going to take action.
Nate's class is studying air quality through using a monitoring machine called a spec designed by CMU Create Lab.
The students have placed these tools throughout various locations in our school, especially in high traffic areas.
So we have them in our cafeteria.
We have them in the principal's office, we have them in various classrooms, and the students are monitoring to see if there's any concern about the air quality, in particular for their school, and then eventually for Hazelwood.
Nate came to Maker Fair to show off the classes results.
They collect all the fine particles and they measure the air.
This is my reading room.

It's going up real high.
Yeah, it goes up super high every day.
Seems like every day the later in the day is kind of worse.
We were learning about this in class.
You can look at what are the health effects of fine particles.
So if you breathe in bad air it could there's little hairs in your lungs and it makes your lungs very bad.
Your lungs is about right by your heart.
So if you get something stuck in your lungs that's going to affect the pump and your heart.
This is how they affect you.
Once they affect you, there's no telling what could happen.
You could get cancer, asthma, bronchitis.
We're answering questions.
Find solutions to make it better.
[Music Plays] Hi Amya!
How are you?
I really like making things, and I like arts and crafts.
Not every young maker could exhibit their creations at Maker Faire.
So we're going to visit 11 year old Amaya Harris at her makerspace, Maker's Place in Homewood.
I like dressing up and doing all those things.
Amaya is a sixth grader at the Environmental Charter School and dreams of being a clothing designer.
I thought it was really coo when my mom got me for Christmas these books that had a whole bunch of dolls in them that you can draw on top of, like your clothes.
And I did that a whole lot.
And now since I've had experience with the makers place, I can actually make the doll clothes that I had from years back.
And now that I look, look at them, I like, really, really like them.
The makerspace really is an esteemed focus program.
So entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering and math.
Maker's place is a program of the Bible Center Church, and Amaya comes there every Friday.
Deborah Lynn Woodbury Shaw runs the program.
It gives teenager in middle school and high school age students an opportunity to just make and create, but through an entrepreneurial focus.
They also teach us how to sell things and how to pitch a business.
We sell these for about like $5 because they are pretty valuable and it took a long time to make.
And we also sell them at our maker party.
And a lot of people came and they bought a lot of them.
We really kind of come from the perspective of, you're already making you already have these talents, skills and abilities.
So how can we leverage those abilities that you have and kind of pick them further?
So we teach entrepreneurship through the lens of where the students already are, and then using entrepreneurship to teach Steam when we first started, like the different modules, like they'd have arts and crafts, they'd have fashion design and they had coloring.
And my two that I really like because I'm a true maker, I really like the arts and crafts, and I really wanted to do the fashion design.
So what are you designing right now?
I'm going to make a dress.
So we went on different field trips and saw like different places.
Once we went to Google and it was like really awesome.
We saw how people like sell their things and like pitch their different ideas, and I really liked it, so I decided I wanted to.
So the community they were in, we recognized is economically disadvantaged in so many ways.
Many of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and which is a measure of poverty.
So we recognize that entrepreneurship is an important aspect for our students so that they're able to take their skills.
And even if it's not there in career, but still able to, oh, I can put myself through college because I have this skill and now I'm creating a business around it.
Amaya and other young makers create bibs, candles, CDs and other small items to sell.
They keep some of the money and reinvest the rest in the program.
Just making all of this stuff takes a lot to learn to pull some here to.
Okay, making just the regular bibs takes a lot.
And like the patterns and like just all of it is a lot to take in and one time or one sitting.
But in the long run, it really makes a difference because you want to keep doing it after a while.
Because I've even gotten my own sewing machine now that I make all my stuff and I really like it, makers place even goes a step further with their young makers.
The program encourages the kids to tackle a social issue and try to find solutions through making.
The social problem that I thought was really important was teens sailing or dropping out of a class, or dropping out of high school or just school, period.
And I thought that was lik really, like really sad because, I mean, they won't be abl to get the things that they need in life.
2,000,215 students shopped out of school in 2014.
We had an idea of doing a websites app that helps kids in their classroom and in their school to appear based.
So you get like if someone needs help, they'd ax and then the other person will have them on the computer or on the app.
We had the budget, right?
So we you said budget from your revenue and your fixed cost.
Let's see how much I was the designer of the project.
So like I made a lot of things look pretty and make it look nice and big, things like that.
I like to make different inventions.
When I made it kind of remind me of the sun.
I like to build somethin with my hands or like doing this where we can build something really, really awesome.
It's really, really cool to do this.
Making pushes young people to ask questions about who they are, what's in their world, how can they make it better?
[Music Plays] Making is extremely important for everyone, especially young kids, because it helps them to realize that the world that they see around them doesn't have to be that way.
What you did, you did the bright order.
Everybody can discover something and make something and not just have to follow their career path.
Making helps young people question and discover, but it also helps them develop skills they'll need in the future.
They learn collaboration, of course, most most importantly, talking to one another.
And they learn how to look at data and how to analyze it, and they learn how to apply that to problems they face at home, in their schools and in the community.
Why make making is inherent to who we are as human beings?
This isn't new.
This is something we've been doing forever.
I'm a historian by training and building things with our hands, tinkering, playing, using different types of tools.
It's the way that we build our identity now that's nice.
[Music Plays] Making is important for our students because it takes what they already know, what they already love and infuses things that we know are necessary for the 21st century.
So we know that you're going to need these Stem subjects, but then also showing that math and science can be fun.
It doesn't have to be something like, well, that's only in school.
Like, no, it's in all of your life.
Many schools in the area have answered the challenge to make STEM fun.
One of the most successful is Elizabeth Forward Middle School, which opened a space dedicated to encouraging all kinds of making.
We have plastic here.
You can pick all kinds of color.
After you're done making your model.
You can clean it over here just as Apple.
What you can do this is innovation hallway and innovation hallways in our dream factory.
And we have about 550 children here, grade six, seven and eight.
And every child in our school will come through the dream factory in some capacity.
Each area of the Dream Factory has a different focus.
Rooms are dedicated to computer science, industrial technology and art and all three are highly integrated in our art area.
We have 3D printers and children are able to create products and ideas using art and 3D printing and computer technology.
Using their iPads.
We basically drew four different shapes, and we picked our favorite emotion and drew full body pictures of them with the face or body moving slightly.
And once you add it to animation Express it fast forwards it.
In the industrial technology classroom, they're incorporating working with wood and metal, but also incorporating that with plastics and glass and laser cutting with cardboard.
So there I was, a block of wood, the block of wood, and then we shaped it with the bandsaw and then cut out our hole in the back for the CO2 cartridge.
This is the balsa wood car.
It's the finished product with the CO2 cartridge and the wheels.
And in our computer class it's not doing word processing or desktop publishing.
It's creating programing to manufacture products that can move and operate.
It can make little keychains such as this, and it can make iPhone cases.
And there's something already preprogramed in it.
There's already five preprogramed and one of this is the bracelet.
[Music Plays] So why did Elizabeth Forward invest so much time and effort in creating the Dream factory?
I'm very concerned as our country evolves, we're losing some of these creative and unique people that can build and create and design to other countries.
And I think really we have a charge to provide opportunities for children in our world to learn these technologies.
[Music Plays] One of the most important things that this dream factory has created, it's changed the culture of our school.
Kids go home at night and they all have computers and some technologies.
However, we wanted to be cool and we wanted school to be a place where they don't.
Some of the things that they have here, they don't have at home, and that's what we're doing.
Heading back north to the city, we find another school that emphasizes making, but with a different approach.
At the Environmental Charter School and Regent Square, students walk outside the door to Frick Park to find materials to help in their making.
I'm making a sand mandala out of natural pigments we use to paint and sand to add together to make different colors.
Our Thinking Lab program is a classroom that merges the disciplines of science, art, technology, and design.
We're really building the foundation and helping students fall in love with those disciplines.
We really believe that students can learn through making, and whether it's experimentin with materials or doing a design challenge, student are really understanding content and also building the skills and practices through making.
Making brings people together into a unique family.
It's just kind of to take something that I thought only I was doing and transitioned into a whole movement where I can see everybody in Pittsburgh who's involved with this, all the Google employees and the top members and everybody who decided to take things upon themselves and build something that they wanted to making also teaches us how to learn from our failures as well as our successes.
There's many things to learn from making, especially how you've broken something.
When I was maybe nine and a half, I was taking apart a blender for its motor.
Failure is a great thing to learn from making, and I sent it to the bottom by accident.
I grounded 240V of AC current through myself.
It's all about the process.
And I said, well, this isn't working.
I need to figure out what I'm doing.
So we here at assemble focus not just on making just to make stuff, but understanding why you're making it through the design process or the engineering process.
Anything that's red and anything that has a stroke of .00 will be cut by the laser cutter.
Anything that's black or gray will be engrave.
So this is going to be a three dimensional cube with engraved surfaces.
Making is hugely important for young people.
It allows firstly an opportunity for empowerment and the satisfaction of having built something with your hands and with new tools that you're learning.
[Music Plays] Making is also a way for people to pursue new opportunities in their own education as well as career.
I want to be a fashion designer.
I've always wanted to fly.
I want to be an engineer.
I want to be a graphic design major.
For our young makers, creating isn't just about finding their own career path.
It's much, much more.
And I also want to help people make things.
So like for the people that are struggling on making things or not knowing what to make, I can be like the light to show them.
Like what you can make.
Nate's interes in engineering is more personal.
There's a good reason he wants to make the air easier to breathe.
[Music Plays] My brother has asthma.
He has asthma attacks.
At night.
If we find a solution, people who have asthma, they they won't have that much asthma attacks.
But for most makers, it's just the sheer joy of making itself.
I don't know, it can teach you so much if you let it, and just it's fun.
Making makes me feel great.
I don't really think about it much when I'm working on it.
A lot is just something that I do.
It's almost like it's not work, but it's fun.
It makes me happy to like, make things that can help other people and that can impact other people's lives.
