Good evening and welcome to "Studio 3 Live."
I'm your host, Mickey Davis.
Tonight, I'm really excited to welcome some of my friends in the NOLA Jazz Band to perform this evening.
The NOLA Jazz Band is made up of a number of Des Moines musicians, a kind of rotating cast of folks who play across town and across Iowa in many different projects.
But when they come together, the NOLA Jazz Band really continues to interpret and reimagine a traditional style of music found in the streets of New Orleans.
Some of these tracks might find a home in Bourbon Street.
Some of them might feel like new takes on a classic tradition.
So without further ado, please give it up for the NOLA Jazz Band.

Tell me a little bit about the band.
What are your roles?
How did the band come together?
Would love to hear the origin story.
The band actually started in 2014.
We were a one-off for the Des Moines Arts Festival, so we put a group together and just had a really good time playing in the jazz and wine tent.
Then from there, we thought we might want to play somewhere once a month, and we played at a place called the Des Moines Social Club, and we started there.
Had maybe 20 or 30 people, the first show, about 80 the next.
And then we sold out our third show, and we played there for 4 1/2 years.
So we've been playing together ever since then.

Jeff got me hook, line, and sinker when we decided I was going to join the group when he said, "It's going to be lots of heart and very gutsy and very grabbing the -- grabbing the audience with the feel of the music."
And that is what I try and do with all of my groups.

What -- What's the value in that kind of rotating cast of characters?
And along with that, why is it so important to you all to have kind of a variety of experience and age in the people that you're playing with, as well?
To me, that was really important, 'cause my friends that play down in New Orleans and elsewhere, part of that tradition was you had the people who played for a while, and then they brought in the younger generation to play with them.
So, and also the people who've been playing for a while, you learn a lot from the younger people, too.
And as Abbie mentioned, everybody kind of brings their own thing to it.
So from the beginning for our group, we knew we'd have a core group of people, what we call kind of our extended family.
