- My name is Carly Gibson, and this is our bassist, Dustin Williams.
- This is our incredible drummer, David Williams, and we are The Pussywillows.
And that last song you just heard is about how we want each other to see one another.
When you look in the mirror you see imperfection, when I see her all I can see is the absolute perfect, and I want her to see herself that way too.
- Yeah, we mirror each other, and that's the reminder of that song.
- Carly and I have been playing together for about a decade.
Actually, meeting at an open mic night, Carly and I got hired to do like an in the round sorta thing.
So it was Carly, a rando dude, and me, and we were playing our own original songs, and by the end of like a 45 minute set, we were harmonizing with one another, just organically it just felt right.
And I was like, "Hey, like wanna hang out tomorrow?"
And she was like, "Yeah."
- [Carly] Yeah.
- And then we wrote our first song ever the first time we hung out, just on the floor of one of our bedrooms, and we were like, "We should be a band, this feels really special."
- Mhm, and it was kind of planned by the owner, Steve Grossman, he was the guy- - Of Steve's Live Music, you guys remember that in Sandy Springs?
- He was the guy that was like, he was putting it together in his mind- - In the universe, yes.
I think our sound has changed a lot.
We've been together for almost a decade, which we can't believe.
- I know, it's crazy.
- And one of the reasons we kind of wanna do this whole music thing is to work through our own journeys, our own growth, and so it's been really cool to work through our personal growth through these songs, and you can tell, our old material is really angry, we were very rageful and confused.
(Carly laughing) And as we grow and begin to trust ourselves more, individually and collectively, our songs have become I think more soft and warm and authentic and purposeful to the new women that we are today.
- Mhm.
- So, the first song that we played for you all is "Favor", it's about seeing your, like loving someone else, right?
Second song is about loving yourself.
This one's about loving yourself so much that you just start just dating around a lot, and you can just find anybody in any room, and you love yourself so much that they'll find you attractive.
So, this next song kind of goes to that confident spirit and that we don't care anymore spirit, indifference I think, sheer indifference toward culture and society at large.
We just wanna feel good, and that's what "Pretty Young Thing" is about.
And this is for all you pretty young things out there.

But yeah she just took it and ran with it.
- That's kinda how we do things, she writes something just sick on guitar and I'm like, "Oh, I know where to go."
(Carly laughing) I think what kind of makes The Pussywillows so special, to me at least, is that Carly and I, and Dustin and David and I, are actually best friends in real life, we talk 24 million times a day, Carly just helped me through a really bad breakup.
(Hannah laughing) And we actually spend most of our waking hours together, or talking if we can't be together.
And I think that really informs our music, it's not like we're getting together for a rehearsal to work on music, we're just working on life and it happens to be kind of through this lens of alternative rock and roll music.
- Yeah, and it's awesome how the other things that we do in life, like I teach yoga, I work for your other job with you, and it's just cool because everything we do is kinda paralleled, and it all reflects in our music.
- Yeah, and we all are friends with each other's people, all of our partners get to come to rehearsals and be a part of the family and a part of the band, and I think that also kind of informs the shows that we play and the amazing crowds that come out to support us, and it all kind of just works together, you know, good energy, getting good energy back.
We have been so fortunate and lucky and grateful and honored to be able to play some incredible venues in the state of Georgia, and we really, really love playing Eddie's Attic.
One of the coolest things about that stage is that they don't let anybody talk while you play, they literally hush people, and I think every venue in America should be like that.
Somebody gets on a mic and everybody has to just, "Sh!"
And listen.
- It's amazing.
They also have a sign on the wall that says that, but you know people don't read or listen, so they always have to have the guy, the sound guy's like, "Please don't talk."
(Carly laughing) - I'm trying to think of other good stories.
No PBS good stories.
Oh, no, no, that's still not a good PBS story.
(Carly laughing) - So every time we play a live show, most times, you know, since these guys have the same last name, we switch their names around in text messages 'cause it's DW on all of them, they're not related, Dustin and David Williams, but they are soul brothers, which- - Soul brothers.
- Is quite funny, because we constantly get them mixed up on accident.
Like, "Everyone, Dustin, oops, David!"
- [Carly] Woops!
(Carly laughing) - We are so excited to debut this next song, no one has ever heard it outside of the rehearsal room before.
This is a song called "Woman", and as we all age and grow throughout life, we kind of have to relearn and renegotiate who we are with ourselves, and what our time means to us and what matters, and that's kind of what this song is, an exploration of time and self and remembering that all people, especially women, we should take the time to create the life that we deserve and desire.

That was so much fun.
(Hannah laughing) - For "Woman", that one, well we're both now in our 30s.
- Woo!
(Carly laughing) - And you know, it's so- - Rock and roll in your 30s, baby.
- You have to accept yourself in a different way in your 30s, and I think we have beautifully come to a place of acceptance and just affirming who we are, and as sisters too, as chosen sisters.
And it really just is a affirmation to be kind to yourself as you age gracefully, because- - Absolutely.
- We deserve to as women.
- Yes, and we believe that like real, true life has to come from the self first.
So a lot of our material is about like how to find or express that love for yourself, so then you can go and express that love outwardly to the world.
- I would say the things that inspire us the most outside of music, uh, would be self improvement and also just how we work through life with that lens.
And also trying to not always be perfect, and always be doing the things perfectly, but trying to find a balance within that of just being a human as well.
But I feel like that's something that really resonates with us, is how we are always just trying to be better, and it comes out in our music.
- Yeah we think being better musicians just makes us better people.
- Well being females in the music business is always a bit interesting, even though it's 2023 and you'd think it'd be different by now.
But it's not.
So, we really, I think, are very confident in the fact that sometimes we are the only women in the room sometimes.
I was one of 10 women to graduate from my school in like over 12 years, way back in that time.
(Hannah and Carly laughing) So, it's really wild, but I think what we love most about it is we just, we don't really care, we just do our thing, and yeah- - We're so punk rock that we don't even post on social media sometimes.
- Yep.
(Carly laughing) - We are very pleased to play this next song called "Peach" for your guys, some of the instrumentation is a little bit different than some of our other songs.
But what is key in all Pussywillow songs is this super tight duo harmony, a la Heart or Indigo Girls.
So you'll hear that in "Peach".
What else are people gonna hear in "Peach"?
- I think what makes it also great is it's got this classic funk blues thing, and we all get to shine in kind of our comfy spots.
- Let's get comfy, shall we?
