Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- After George Floyd's death I'm often asked "Is this a movement or a moment?"
And my view is it it's hovering somewhere between those twin poles.
(gentle music) But it is certainly a significant moment and the moment is a reckoning that we need to add these diverse voices to the leadership.
But the real question is what took so long?
- At least we're on the right path, the right like that's how it feels to me.
Like we're on the right path.
I think until we start asking about our trans sisters and brothers, I feel like until we start asking about our undocumented communities, I feel like until we start asking about our disabled communities, then you know, we're dropping in the bucket.
That we are thinking about the most vulnerable populations and how we're pulling them in.
- You know, I think that the city is going through a Renaissance.
So there's this wave of BIPOC leaders black, indigenous, Asian, Latin X, leaders that are part of this reconstruction of imagining what Boston can look like when other people have an opportunity to reach their potential through leadership.
- You know, all these conversations that are going on now about race, racism and systemic racism, for me, it's a finally, finally we're having these discussions.
- Real racial equity work does require you to think about how do you shift decision-making power and ownership and control Senior leadership and boards have to be intentional about doing that work together.
- This is what we always knew, that if you let these young people into the room where all these things happen then their voices and people actually listened to them then they will understand how brilliant they are, and how infectious their passions can be.
They give us the excuse to think bigger, differently and better about solutions to the challenges that we have.
