Welcome to New 42's Let's Get This Show on the Street.
Because New York City is not truly open until its stages are open.
So we are bringing the stage to you right here on the street in 90-degree heat over a beat.
We're very excited to be here because today we celebrate the passionate voices and projects of the arts, where performing arts at New 42 and the New Victory Theater give us the unique ability to transport to new places, meet new faces, find new ideas, launch new careers.
And honestly, it builds community here, and most importantly, the work at New 42 is focused on arts education in our schools.
[ Applause ] So it can help kids through a tough time and help them thrive in the future.

But the nicest thing is to actually see other people in three dimensions.
So I'm so glad that we are all here together.
I'm especially happy to be celebrating artists and art teachers with New 42.
Art is so important.
I don't know about you all, but if it wasn't for art, I don't think I would've made it through this last year.
It's what's kept us all sane, and I know a lot of people, by the way, that aren't involved in the arts, I think that's true for pretty much everybody not only in the United States but in the world, is our reliance on art because I don't think everybody really understands that all that entertainment we have been watching on television and listening to in our headphones, that's the work of artists.
[ Cheers and applause ] All those television shows we binge-watch, it's not just the actors.
It's the directors and it's the writers and it's the creators and it's the designers and it's the composers and the orchestrators and all of those people, and that is why art is so important and having the ability to learn arts in the schools is so important.
A lot of people think so they can hang pictures in some museum.
No, it's not about that.
It's getting us through times like these.
Thank God for all of the artists and thank God for New 42 and New Victory and all of the teachers out there with us today.
Thank you for all of your work.
You are essential workers in my world.
[ Cheers and applause ] So thank you for that.

I am Misty Copeland, and I am beyond thrilled to be joining you today to help present the New 42 Marian Heiskell Award to such a deserving individual.
This award is given to those rare and extraordinary leaders whose foresight and courage, like Marian's, shaped the future of New York City.
It is my honor to acknowledge Jody Arnhold as this year's recipient.
Now, there just isn't enough time to cover all that Jody has done and continues to do for New York City through arts education.
She has shown that when opportunities and support are given to a community, the possibilities are endless.
Jody, your passion for and generosity towards young people is beautiful and so necessary.
You have long been an inspiration, paving the way for so many.
Your investment in the future of art and dance and the next generation is what will keep it alive.
Your relentless work and dedication to dance education is the reason that myself and so many have had the opportunities to use art to better and further ourselves and our communities.
On behalf of all of the public-school kids whose lives have been changed and enhanced through dance, we want to thank you.
Thank you for influencing generations who will continue your work and benefit from your efforts.

[ Cheers and applause ] I am proud to stand here on 42nd Street, feeling that we're on the cusp of the dream where every school has a partnership with a cultural organization, where every school has a certified arts teacher... [ Cheers and applause ] ...where every school has the materials and the resources needed for an excellent arts education, including a dance studio and a theater.
[ Cheers and applause ] And where our city has the plan to sustain it forever.
Without arts education, there is no art.
So whenever we say art, we must say arts education.
Arts and arts education will turbocharge the recovery of New York City, connect every New York City school with a cultural organization, with certified arts teachers, with materials and resources, and allow our schools to be part of the revitalization story of our city.
Allow our children to heal.
As our chancellor says, a rich foundation in the arts is absolutely essential to a well-rounded education.
And I say this is our moon shot.
Let's not waste it once and for all.
Arts education for every child in every school.

So, thank you to New 42 and the New Victory Theater and all the work you do to bring music and arts and storytelling and poetry and dance and expression to young minds who need to understand how to say what they have to say.
So, this show showed up in my life in a completely unexpected way, and the first song I wrote for it is a song called "She Used To Be Mine".
[ "She Used To Be Mine" plays ] ♪ It's not simple to say ♪ ♪ Most days I don't recognize me ♪ ♪ These shoes and this apron ♪ ♪ That place and its patrons ♪ ♪ Have taken more than I gave 'em ♪ ♪ It's not easy to know ♪ ♪ I'm not anything like I used to be ♪ ♪ Although it's true ♪ ♪ I was never attention's sweet center ♪ ♪ I still remember that girl ♪ ♪ She's imperfect but she tries ♪ ♪ She is good but she lies ♪ ♪ She is hard on herself ♪ ♪ She is broken and won't ask for help ♪ ♪ She is messy but she's kind ♪ ♪ She is lonely most of the time ♪ ♪ She is all of this mixed up ♪ ♪ And baked in a beautiful pie ♪ ♪ She is gone but she used to be mine ♪ ♪♪ ♪ It's not what I asked for ♪ ♪ Sometimes life just slips in through a back door ♪ ♪ And carves out a person ♪ ♪ And makes you believe it's all true ♪ ♪ And now I've got you ♪ ♪ And you're not what I asked for ♪ ♪ If I'm honest I know I would give it all back ♪ ♪ For a chance to start over ♪ ♪ Rewrite an ending or two ♪ ♪ For the girl that I knew ♪ ♪ Who'll be reckless just enough ♪ ♪ Who gets hurt ♪ ♪ But who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised ♪ ♪ And gets used by a man who can't love ♪ ♪ And then she'll get stuck and be scared ♪ ♪ Of the life that's inside her ♪ ♪ Growing stronger each day ♪ ♪ Till it finally reminds her ♪ ♪ To fight just a little ♪ ♪ To bring back the fire in her eyes ♪ ♪ That's been gone but used to be ♪ ♪ Miiiine ♪ ♪ Used to be miiiiiine ♪ ♪♪ ♪ She is messy but she's kind ♪ ♪ She is lonely most of the time ♪ ♪ She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie ♪ ♪ She is gone but she used to be ♪ ♪ Miiiine ♪ [ Cheers and applause ] I cannot tell you how emotional that was, singing that song again in our theater district.
New York City, the heartbeat of New York City!
This is so incredible.
Thank you all for being here.
I got one more song for you, and it's a song that I wrote as a love letter to a dear friend who was struggling with coming out, and I think one of the things that theater and arts education does for people is that they provide a safe space for people to be authentically who they are -- that they know they are already perfect exactly as they were made.
So this song was a love letter to one of my closest friends.
It has taken on a lot of its own, and if it means something to you, please sing along with me.
This one's called "Brave".
