♪ [snappy music] ♪ A statue of the nation's first president, George Washington, is at the foot of dozens of granite steps at the State House.
In February of 1865, Sherman's Army damaged the statue and broke off the lower part of the walking cane.
The State House was one of the buildings lost during the burning of Columbia, but fortunately, construction of a new State House was already underway.
Today, you can see bronze stars scattered across the State House marking areas where Sherman's cannons hit.
Rebuilding after the war was a very slow process, but the State House was finally completed in 1903, nearly 50 years after construction began.
