This summer I'm trying to learn everything I can about art and I've already met so many cool artists.
It's been a blast!
But today has to be one of my favorite days because it's the whenever we feel like it in summer dance-off.
It's a dance competition where all of the studios in my building compete to see who has the best dance moves.
Grandma Tilly has been the reigning champ for two years in a row.
So, in honor of this competition, I am going to a hip hop dance studio called Move Makers.
Cue the music.

♪ It's "The Infinite Art Hunt" - Hey Ty!
I just wanted to let you know that I am super excited for the whenever we feel like it in summer dance off tonight.

- It's totally worth it.
But are you okay?
You don't seem really excited.
- Have you forgotten the tradition for the whenever we feel like an in summer dance off?
- My tradition is to drink a cup of ginger ale for every two hot dogs.
What?
It helps with stomach aches.
- The tradition is that last year's winning studio has to start the dance off to get the party started and the studio head is usually the first one to dance.
But since Grandma Tilly isn't here, the studio head is now me.
- Lucky!
- No, not lucky.
Dropping your phone and catching it right before it falls down a flight of stairs is lucky.

It's nice to meet you guys.
Grandma Tilly, she's a wild one.
You know, one time after a full day of extreme white water rafting, she still had the energy to drop a triple double on me, you know, in a pickup game of basketball?
- Wow.
- Where does she get all the energy from?
- You know, I've been wondering the same question.

- Oh!
And speaking of questions, would you mind if I ask you a few?
It's for a segment I do in my vlog.
- Ask away.
I'm all yours.
- It's time for too many questions with Freddie.
- And Ty.
(upbeat music) - What is your job?
- I am a dance teacher sometimes, but mostly I am an administrator these days.
- What do you do all day?
- I send emails.
- What do you like about your job?
- I like providing an opportunity for people to have access to the rich culture of hip hop.
I like the opportunity to give people a platform where they can grow themselves and make community.
All these things are fun.
- Did you dance when you were a kid?
- Yeah, I started dancing when I was around 11 or 12.
- What's the most embarrassing thing you experienced in seventh grade?
- Seventh grade?
Hmm.
Seventh grade was all triumph for me, so we will just leave it at that.
- Awesome.
Do you put your left shoe on first or your right shoe on first?
- I don't put my shoes on.
- They just appear?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- What influenced you to become a dancer?
- Felt good.
- Felt good?
- It felt good, you know?
- Why do people dance?
- To feel good and to communicate and to make community.
- What's your favorite thing about dancing?
- My favorite thing about dancing is the ability to take command over the moment, to be present.
- Can you catch this wave?
- Wow!
- Wait, bring it back, bring it back.
- Oh, bring it back, bring it back, bring it back, bring it back.

- Felt good, good feelings, good vibes.
- If a fish could say one English word, what do you think it would be?
- Bubbles.
- [Freddie] Cool!
- If you could grant a superpower to a person of your choice, who would it be?
- My mom.
- If someone you really care about was scared to dance, how would you convince them to try?
- Something like dance, it's really about bring your own personality and style to it so that's what's good about dance.
And I would assure them that dance is really about having a relationship with yourself and how you exist in the world and in your environment and responding to your environment.
- Was there ever a time when you had trouble with dance?
- Yeah, in my opinion, I feel like it's been a little bit of trouble since the beginning.
There was one particular instance recently where I had probably the most trouble and that was when I got injured training.
No one's great at something the first time that they try it and the cool thing about dance is that you bring your own personality and style to it so that makes it a little bit more accessible and you know what, how about this?
I have this really wonderful group of dance students that I teach and I think that they could show you guys some moves, maybe get you ready for that whenever you feel like in summer dance off.
- Wait, how do you know about that?
- Ah, how do I know about it?

This is Jose, signing off.
Back to you Freddie.
(paper crumbling) (group talking indistinctly) - Hey guys, how you doing?
Hey Ty and Freddie, these are my students.
We have Alana, Sophia, Isis and Leander.
Everyone, this is Ty and Freddie.
I figure you can help 'em out with learning some dance moves for a competition they have coming up.
- Yeah.
- Of course.
- Hey, it's nice to meet you guys.
- [Group] Hi!
- But if I'm being honest, I think I'm kind of nervous.
Okay, I'm really nervous.
I've never really danced before so I just know I'll be awful at it.
- That's okay.
No one's really good at something when they first try and when learning a new dance, we break it down step by step.
That helps us learn the moves we want to perform more clearly.
- Oh, that sounds surprisingly organized and I like the sound of that.
I think I'll give it a try.
- Nice!
And don't worry about messing up, if you do, just keep going and we can always try again.
I still mess up sometimes too.
- Okay, let's do it.
I don't have to be in the front if... - No, it's all right.
- So we're gonna learn a few moves and then put them into a little routine.
The first one we're learning is patty dukes.
So you're doing a solid bounce and your arms work together and then when your arms go up, your leg goes out.
So you do two on each side.
So, one, two, and then switch, four, five six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
When we do it, we'll only do two of them.
So it'll just be one, two, three, four.
Everyone good with that?
- Yeah.
- Yep.
- You guys wanna try it?
- Yeah.
- Okay, let's see.
Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
That was great.
- Good job!
- Thanks.
- You wanna go?
- Okay.
- All right.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
All right, that was pretty good.
Just make sure your arms stay at your chest so you're not going up here and then your arms are kind of triggering your feet.
So when your legs go out, your arms go up.
- Goes down.
- Yep.
Two and switch.
Yeah, that's perfect.
You wanna try it again?
- Okay.
Okay.
- One, two, three, four, yeah and don't worry about it.
Try and be loose with it.
Don't stay stiff, your body's kind of connected.
Your arms are triggering your legs.
You can keep it smaller.
You can just bounce at your legs, not your whole body, you know?
A little bit of chest, a little bit of legs.
- There you go.
- Not forward.
Go down like this with your legs together.
Yeah, that's right.
Keep your arms closer together in the front.
- Okay.
- And then add a leg.
- Okay.
- Two and switch.
Leg out small, instead of a kick, it's like a press.
Yeah.
- Okay.
- And switch.
Yeah, yeah, that looks good.
- Okay.
- There you go.
- Okay.
- Yeah, that's it.
- Okay.
Okay.
- Yeah, you got it.
That was great.
- Cool.
- Good job.
- Ready for the next move?
All right, next move is gonna be, it's called the smurf.
Basically what you're doing, your arms are just going over your head.
You kind of like push them, one, two, so you're pushing it one, two.
While you're doing the move you're bouncing.
So it'd be one, two, switch.
One, two, switch.
One, two, switch.
One, two, you guys think you got that?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
You wanna show it?
Why don't you go first.
- One.
Yeah, go a little bit faster.
Right, one, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
Yeah, you got it.
Now let's see you.
Let's go.
- You got this Ty!
- Let's go on.
- One, oh, that's interesting.
So a little bit less of this and more like this, you're just going forward.
- Okay.
- Okay.
So not out, forward, yeah, bending your knees.
Remember, calm or loose.
- Loose.
- We're vibing.
This is hip hop, you gotta let it out, you know?
Not like a stick.
So now I'm just here.
Yeah, okay, faster.
One, two, three, four.
Yeah, you got it!
(group cheering) Let's see next move.
- All right, hi guys.
So the move we're doing is called a reebok.
So we're gonna move our arms side to side.
So like this and then we're gonna jump side to side with it.
So we're gonna go one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Okay, so make sure you're jumping side to side when you're going like this.
- There you go.
- That's how you do it.
- Hey!
- Let's go!
Hey!
- Yeah, that's good.
Good job.
Let's see you do it.
- Let's go.
- You go this, you got this.
- Hey!
- Hey!
- Almost.
- Yeah!
- Make sure you're not like twisting like this.
Make sure you're jumping side to side.
So like one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- Yeah!
- Let's see you do it again.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Great job!
- Nice!
- That's was great.
- Okay, so the last move is called the walk.
Where you go, you swing your arms like this and you're gonna go one, two, and then up, three, four.
So you go one, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
Do you got it?
- I got it, yeah.
- Okay.
There you go.
Yeah!
- That's great.
- You got it.
- Thanks.
- Let's see.
- Okay.
- Hey!
Let's go.
Okay, so that could be like a variation of it, but for the original one, you have your arms swinging like this.
So you're gonna have them like this.
Yeah, there you go.
So you go down, up, yeah!
- And the legs goes that way?
- Yeah.
- Hey!
Hey!
- There you go!
- Good job!
- Okay!
- Yeah, now Sophia's gonna lead you through the whole thing.
- Yeah, so we're gonna put the moves together.
Patty duke, smurf, reebok and the walk.
All right, so four counts of each.
Five, six, seven, eight.
- [Group] One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- [Sophia] Same goal, same goal, double, five, six, seven, eight.
There you go!
You guys feeling good?
- Yeah.
- You wanna show it?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Let's go.
- Five, six, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
That was awesome!
- Good job!
- High five!
- Thanks!
- You wanna try?
- Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... That was great.
(group clapping) - Good job, Ty!
- That was great, that was great.
