Known as the Trailblazer Hours, the senior performance team gets senior citizens on their feet.
One of our interns, Elena Arjona, has their story.
When I retired, everybody thinks, Now what do I want to do?
And I thought when I heard about that dance class, I said, Yeah, that's what I want to do.
The trailblazer HSAs are one of my favorite parts of our organization.
So this is our oldest age group in our artist development program.
You have to be at least 55 years old to get into the class.
Some of us have been together since the fall of 2009 when that initial group started.
But this new group, this is our second full year together.
Some of the core members of the group had already been together in another little dance company.
Their instructor had to move away so they didn't have a coach.
You would not believe how we cried when the teacher moved.
It was just like the group was.
Dissolved.
And we didn't want that.
No one could sleep.
Everybody was calling each other.
Let's all okay, let's divide and conquer.
You take these dance teachers.
You take these dance teachers.
One of the members of the group reached out to me and she said I could.
Who could you recommend?
Do you have somebody that we're looking for?
A coach?
And I said, Well, how about if you just come with us?
Come be part of the Lexington Theater Company?
The Trailblazers used to be known as the flat out fund dancers, and we were so happy that they sat us out.
They are flat out fun.
They come together once a week to dance, to laugh, to tell stories together.
And then they also have a community outreach component where they get to go and perform for all sorts of events.
I guess our big performance last year with Bryant was dancing at Memorial Coliseum for the halftime of one of the girls basketball.
I think they admire seeing us that we have fun.
That's what people say.
They just have more fun.
They smile.
They might miss a step or two, but they just smile and keep on going.
So that part's fun.
One of the benefits of them being in class is that they can just take class, if that's all that they're ready for right now.
But if they also want to perform and a lot of them got that performing bug still, we do that at least once a month.
It's so wonderful to just kind of get to be a part of it.
It's a great source of pride for us to get to, to get to have them amongst our repertoire of performers.
Our goal in this group is not only to have fun, but we want to be able to keep moving.
So we have to learn dance steps, our mind is constantly learning and thinking and thinking.
Our bodies are getting good exercise with that.
And then the icing on the cake is the girls.
You know, we become a big family of sisters and so and that's good for us.
As you age, you don't need to be in isolation.
You need other people that you know that you're with, like people that can relate to what you're going through.
But we look forward to this.
I mean, all of us say that our performances and our dance classes there first on the calendar, the doctors and everybody else have to work around that.
I think it's a huge benefit.
There's not a lot of programing for senior citizens, unfortunately.
There's times, I think, that I think areas just tend to write them off as they get to retirement age or beyond.
They still have so much to give.
And our hope is that the Trailblazer program will move beyond dance and through all facets of the arts so that that senior community can feel service and honored by S.F.
Election Theater Company, whether that's a dance class, screenwriting class or script class or whatever that might be.
Just getting to watch these incredible folks who are truly trailblazing, they have gone first.
Standing up for this idea of it's never too late and you're never too old and it's never always the right time to learn and to be creative and to share your gifts and perform with the community.
Well, thank you, Alana, for sharing that story with us.
Good job.
