I'm your host, Colin O'Brady.

Top of the world!
My passion for the outdoors helped me overcome the biggest challenges in my own life... [groans] ...and with the support of my family, I have learned that the impossible is possible.
And now each week, I'll be using those life lessons to help mentor two families, each here with their own deeply personal reasons, as they push themselves physically... Woman: [screams] Colin: ...mentally... - I can't do it.

Colin: Excited to be here?

Colin: You guys are about to go on a challenging expedition, but before that I wanna kinda get to know you guys a little bit.
Harkriders, what do I need to know about your family?
- Our family's resilient.
We've been through a lot the last couple years, since Marshall was injured.
- Rolled an ATV over onto my leg, and I was in the hospital for three months.
I had nine surgeries.
I had to get a prosthetic leg below the knee.
It just took a lot of work to adapt to that.
- He's really inspired us, he's worked through a lot of really, really difficult challenges.
My hopes for this week are that Marshall will have an experience that continues to build confidence and, you know, realize how incredible that is, to be able to be in a situation where maybe you are a little bit scared or you are a little bit anxious, but uh, push through it and, and come out on the other side.
- I'm pretty excited to see how I do and challenge myself out here.
Colin: That's amazing.
I can't relate exactly, but I was actually severely burned in a fire when I was in my early 20s, and I spent several months in a hospital being told I would never walk again normally.
But from that experience, I've actually realized I'm stronger than ever, and it sounds like you've been an inspiration to your whole family, and uh, certainly to everyone here, for sure.
Marshall: Thank you.
Ashley, tell me about your family's flag design.
Ashley: We live in a beautiful part of the state of Tennessee, so the beautiful colors are the Blue Ridge Mountains, the five mountains represent each of us, and the bear represents courage and confidence and strength.

Organized chaos.

Colin: Todd, how about for you, you nervous bringing your kids out here in this environment?
- Initially I was a little tentative, you know, I didn't know what to expect.
But I think it's gonna be a great experience.
Learning to function well as a team is really one of the outcomes I'm hoping for.
I just wanna make sure that we get all, you know, all to the end.
The most important lesson that we can learn from this is that we're stronger together than we are on our own.
- Now what is your biggest objective for bringing them out here?
Woman 4: To remind them that if we're stick together, we can get through anything.
We have one member of our family who isn't on the Earth anymore, a little boy who was diagnosed with leukemia as a baby, and it helps us to realize that every day matters, and it, it helps drive us towards our ultimate goal, which is to all be together forever.
Colin: And would you tell me about your family's flag?
Todd: On our flag we have the desert of Utah, which is where we call home.
Also, a letter C, and that stands for our son, Curren.
He's already on the other side, and we're looking forward to being rejoined with him someday.
- Beautiful, beautiful.
Thank you for sharing that.

Colin: There's so much to be gained as a family going through this.
You'll be going on a challenging three-day, ten-mile journey.
Day One, you'll climb up a steep canyon of loose rocks and narrow corridors, traverse four miles through desert sands and down loose gravel to camp for the night.
Day Two, you'll go off-roading, up uneven ravines next to sheer dropoffs.
Then, race downward, rappelling two jaw-dropping cliffs on your way to camp.
Day Three, you'll navigate three miles across narrow ledges above a large canyon before dropping down into a boulder-ridden dry riverbed into the finish line to raise your family flag.

Todd: It's one of those things that we're trying to get better at as a family is to hear the other person's side of the story or experience and, and take that into account when we figure whether we're at fault or not.
- And not get offended by the outcome.
Becca: [chuckles] Claire: That's me.
[chuckles] Avery: Oh, there it is!
Ashley: Oh, Avery found it.
Robert: Found it already?
Ashley: Way to go, Avery!
Travis: Nice one!
Avery: "Down will be fast, so keep your control.
Close is the finish and your flagpole."
[gasps] Ashley: Oh!
Robert: All right, let's get it.
Colin: The final mile run to camp is a difficult downhill trek on loose gravel, around sharp cacti, and over large rocks to arrive at the family flags.
Ashley: If anybody wants to set the pace, they can pass me.
Robert: Marshall, how are you?
- I'm fine.
My knee is not great downhill.
Robert: Look, you, uh, you go the pace, and I'll keep everybody goin' the right direction.
Marshall: Yeah, I'll catch up.
Y'all just go.
Robert: And we're good.
Marshall: Let's go.
We can make good time on this part.
Todd: There's a trail right here, guys.
Oh!
Here we go.
Becca: Up here, up here!
Todd: 'Kay, hold up!
Becca: "Down will be fast, so keep control.
Close is the finish and your flagpole."
Claire: Okay, you got the coordinates?
Becca: The GPS.
Todd: 'Kay, watch your step, watch your step.
Claire: Go, go, go!
Ashley: Look!
Avery: Oh my gosh, guys.
Ashley: It is beautiful.
Woo!
Last leg!
Travis: Yes.
Ashley: Give it everything you got, then we get to rest for the day!
Marshall: I think overall we did really well, and I hope we can keep that goin' into tomorrow.
Ashley: We're almost there!
Marshall: I'm definitely sore, but we just have to maintain, like a positive mentality like we did today.
We found it.
Travis: Let's go!
Woo-hoo-hoo!
Avery: It says, "Congratulations for winning Day One!"
Ashley: [cheers] Oh my gosh, we won!
Avery: "Now watch the message and enjoy your reward."
Ashley: Watch the message?
Robert: Nice, wait, there's a phone!
Colin: [on phone] Congratulations, family.
If you're watching this, you are the first to arrive to camp.
As a reward for your efforts, I have prepared for you a hot meal that you can enjoy with you and your family as you relax at camp and get ready for a big day tomorrow.
Avery: All right.
Ashley: All right, thank you Colin.
Marshall: Get to camp.
Sutter: Come on.
Todd: Stick to the path.
Treyton: Let's pick up some pace.
Pick up some pace, we're downhill now.
Claire: We're like, there.
Todd: Yeah, 300.
Becca: Three hundred feet!
Sutter: Oh, we're near!
Becca: Oh, he just fell, Todd!
Todd: Okay, okay.
Claire: Oh, there's blood.
Treyton: I'm gonna be okay.
Becca: Okay.
Todd: Oh, Treyton.
Treyton: Gonna be okay.
Becca: Hey, Treyton, let me see, let me see.
Claire: You're, you're fine.
It's really small, it's just right by his eye.
All of a sudden, I hear this, like, sliding sound, and I looked up and Treyton slipped.
Todd: You're gonna stay with us.
Becca: You are brave.
Treyton, you're gonna be so great.
I'm just gonna hold it.
Yeah, you're gonna be okay.
You're gonna be okay.
Todd: As a parent, your mind races, right?
What's the worst possible thing that could happen?
Claire: He hit his head on the rock.
I saw him raise his hand up to his eye, and I can see that he's bleeding a lot.
Medic: 'Kay, let's keep pressure on this.
Becca: Yep, 'kay.
Todd: Treyton, you're brave, dude.
Becca: You want me to do it?
Todd: You're so brave.
Fortunately, he got a lot of support right there on the trail from his sister, and my wife, you know... she's just a mama bear, she's gonna step in there and take care of him.
Becca: Okay baby, you got this.
Todd: We're gonna guide you into, into camp, okay, bud?
Claire: I was gonna say, you wanna take my pack, and I can hold him?
Todd: Yeah.
Yep, you bet, I got it.
Becca: And guess what?
You're family's right here with you.
Claire: It was a scary, scary situation.
Becca: Just goin' slow and steady, like we always do, guys.
Todd: We just need to be safe.
Our kids are tough, and they know that when they get hurt or something goes wrong, we're gonna be right there to help 'em stand up again.
Becca: Raise it up.
Todd: [laughs] Becca: He got it.
Colin: Now 34 minutes behind, the Pace family arrives at camp, but with the severity of Treyton's head injury unknown, he and his mother are evac'ed to a hospital, leaving the others hoping the family can be reunited and come together as a close-knit team.
Claire: Do you think Mom's gonna pull him?
Todd: They'll look him over and then we'll see.
I, I hope he's gonna be fine, be able to continue.
I know that's what he probably wants.
My wife, she's gonna take care of him, she's gonna wanna make sure that he's comfortable.
In the meantime, we'll just cross our fingers for the best outcome and, and wait for them to come back.
- Make sure you have the doors... Zip up that door.
Robert: When I see Marshall helpin' Travis and Avery, it makes me feel like we've done a pretty good job parenting, and the way he can perform is, is outstanding.
Marshall: The door's right there.
Ashley: Don't put any stakes in just yet.
Robert: We did not know how he would respond in this environment and how his leg would respond, and it did great.
It's unbelievable, and then, at the same time, I totally expect it.
Marshall: Uh, you might wanna grab a plate or somethin' I can put 'em on.
Both my legs are really sore, and specifically when we were goin' downhill, I could feel my right knee actually gettin' pretty sore, but, I would say the main thing is rest as much as I can for tomorrow, 'cause I'm expecting an equally hard day, and... I wanna make sure that I'm as rested as I can be.
Ashley: Cheers.
- Toast it.
Toastin' dogs.
Marshall: Cheers.
Todd: I'll just break these up a little bit smaller.
Claire: Treyton's back.
Todd: What?
Oh-ho-ho-ho!
Yay!
Claire: Little trooper!
You're so tough!
Todd: There he is!
Claire: Do you need stitches?
Did you get stitches?
Becca: Five!
Todd: Oh... Claire: Did they put you to sleep?
Todd: ...five whole stitches?
Treyton's the pusher.
I mean, as you can see, he was runnin' headfirst down the trail.
Claire: So you're back in the game, huh?
Becca: He, he wanted to be.
Claire: [laughs] - He said, "I hope the doctor lets me," and she said we just have to, yeah, we just have to take care of him.
Todd: We will do that.
He wants to do this, he wants to finish.
He's a pretty stubborn kid when he sets his mind to somethin'.
Unless you tie him down and hold him back, he's gonna get right back on the horse and go again.
Treyton: We also made a game out of the stitches.
Becca: Yeah?
Claire: Oh no.
Treyton: Who could get the closest to betting how many stitches I would have to have.
- And how many did you get?
Treyton: Five.
Todd: All right.
Becca: So who won?
Claire: [playfully defeated] Mom won.
Treyton: You.
Becca: Can you say that again, Mom won?
Claire: Mom won.
Todd: Oh, big hug, you guys.
Oh, don't crush Treyton too hard.
Becca: [laughs] Todd: Ha, he's tryin' to keep his eye clear.
Becca: We'll be gentle with him.
[insects chirping] [gentle guitar music] Treyton: So, you can look up, and there's a pretty good view of a tall, straight up mountain.
It's amazing how neat nature is.
Colin: Another day lies ahead for both families, and neither shows signs of slowing down.
Ashley: All right, what do you guys think we should do today?
What should be our strategy?
- Win.
Colin: The Harkriders are looking to increase their lead, while the Pace family knows today-- - You guys ready to make up some ground today?
Colin: --they must pick up the pace.
Claire: Yeah.
Todd: I think that'll be a fantastic-- Becca: Without any injuries.
Todd: Yeah, let's try to avoid kissin' those rocks today.
Robert: Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Ashley: There's our flag, there's our flag.
Robert: Come on.
Avery: "Welcome to Day Two.
Wend your way to where modern machines await."
All: Ooo.
Ashley: This way.
Let's go!
Colin: This is Day Two.
The families will travel three miles on foot and off-road vehicles through steep ravines and on the edges of cliff drop-offs.
Then they'll have to make a decision on how fast to get down the mountain and to Camp Two.
Marshall: Let's do GPS.
Ashley: Look like we're goin' the right way, Avery?
Avery: Yep, we just gotta go around this rock.
Ashley: All right.
Todd: Here we go, guys.
Claire: 'Kay.
Todd: Twist it open.
Claire and Becca: "Welcome to Day Two.
Wend your way to where modern machines wait."
Claire: Okay, let's go, that way.
Todd: Awesome.
Let's go.
Becca: Okay.
Todd: Today we wanna just make sure we don't have any injuries, we keep the ankles and the knees strong.
Becca: Yep.
Travis: Come on, let's go!
Marshall: That must be our modern vehicle.
Ashley: Aw, that's awesome.
Avery: Modern mobile.
Ashley: Let's go, let's go.
Robert: Marshall, you're it.
Ashley: Oh boy.
Travis: Don't start yet.
Ashley: Everybody get your seatbelts on.
Robert: Seatbelts, yeah.
Ashley: Let's go!
Woohoo!
The ATV is what Marshall was in when he was injured.
Marshall: Took a corner pretty quick and it rolled onto my leg.
I could've had like 10 extra surgeries, or I could've just gotten rid of it.
Obviously decided to go with the prosthetic.
Keep an eye on the GPS.
Robert: Yeah.
Marshall: It's cool to see my family trust me with this driving.
Robert: If he's gonna get in an ATV, wouldn't want it to be any other way than right here, doin' it as a family.
Ashley: Yep.
Robert: Woo!
Treyton: It's a jeep!
Becca: Oh, you guys.
There's the modern machine.
Oh, can I go?
Can I drive, can I drive?
Todd: You drive, babe.
Becca: Woo!
Let's go, let's go.
Oh, you guys, so fun.
I've always wanted to drive a jeep, and I will be getting guidance from Todd for sure because he's done this kind of stuff before, and he knows.
Oh, you guys.
Todd: Oh, this is serious here.
Ashley: All right, Marshall.
Marshall: Here we go.
- Here we go, man.
[axle clacking] Whoa, what is that?
[laughs] Ashley: Whoa.
Robert: Awesome.
Ashley: Whoa!
You did it.
Oh my!
Woo!
Whoa-ho-ho!
Look at that.
Robert: [laughs] That was incredible.
That's the toughest one yet, for sure.
Ashley: Wow!
- Whoa, we're gonna climb this.
- This is awesome.
Sutter: Ah!
Todd: Just nice and slow.
Claire: You're doin' great, you're doin' great, Todd: You're doin' awesome, mom!
Becca: Guys, this is so cool!
Todd: Honestly, she's doin' really well.
She has a, a little bit of a natural gift for it.
- You guys, this is awesome, I got it.
Sutter: Yeah, you do.
- I got it!
Sutter: Yeah.
Todd: She showed a little bit of an adrenaline junkie side there, I think.
Sutter: Mom just did that.
Claire: Oh, yeah.
Becca: This is so fun.
My family is having faith in me, so I really think that that's awesome of them.
Todd: Holy cow.
Becca: Holy moly.
Yes!
Todd: Woo!
Robert: Oh, this is gonna be intense.
Ashley: Oh, yeah-ha-ha!
Avery: Woo!
Ashley: Ah-hoo-hoo!
Robert: Oh, that is insane!
I can't believe that thing can make it up somethin' like that.
Marshall: It was definitely a little nerve-wracking, but... Ashley: [laughs] Marshall: ...I guess we made it.
Ashley: Run, run, run!
Why do we need helmets?
Robert: There it is, there it is!
Avery: Quick!
Ashley: Time to get out and back.
Avery: "Dig deep and push from within."
Marshall: Oh, get the... Robert: Grab the gear.
Ashley: I guess it's the gear.
Robert: Here we go.
Marshall: Let's go.
Ashley: Okay, let's go.
Robert: I hate to say it, but I think we're goin' to the top of that rock.
Todd: Okay, nice and smooth through here.
Becca: Yeah, this is easy.
Todd: So the GPS is showing, guys, 150 feet in this direction.
Becca: All right, so... Claire: Start looking.
- GPS says it's right here somewhere.
- We got it, we got it!
"Dig deep, and push from within."
Treyton: Get the bags.
Todd: Okay, let's go, guys.
Get our packs!
Ashley: Might be one of these caves.
[breathing heavily] Robert: Might be down lower.
Marshall: Oh, I found it, I found it!
Robert: Oh!
Marshall: All right, come on, come on.
All right, ready?
"If you proceed from here, the payoff is true, "but if you drop in, you must continue.
"However, if you decide to retreat, the route will be easier, but your time will leak."
Colin: Families must now make a decision.
Choose a shorter path that will take them down two intense rappels, or hike the longer, slower route to Camp Two.
Robert: We're not leakin' time, we're not leakin' time.
Ashley: Who's got the GPS?
All right, here we go.
- Time is of the essense.
If we choose to walk, we're gonna probably lose the race.
Guys, I think we're rappelling off of that ledge.
- It looks like we're goin' down a mountain, and I'm not feeling great about it, I'm gonna be honest.
Uh, I don't like heights at all.
Robert: Oh my gosh.
Ashley: Is this the edge?
All right, Travis.
Travis: If I go down first, I don't have to watch it as much, and like, just to get it over with, really.
No, no.
Pull me back up.
Ashley: You're good, Travis, you're good.
Lean back.
Marshall: You got it, Trav.
Ashley: You got it, buddy, you got it.
Robert: Hands off.
Travis: [yelping] Ashley: You're okay, you're okay.
You're not gonna fall.
Robert: He's got you.
Travis: Ah!
Marshall: I'm not gonna be able to do that.
Robert: Yes you are.
Travis: Ah, ah!
NO!
Robert: I don't know if those are screams of happiness or terror!
Marshall: I don't wanna do this.
Robert: You want me to help you get hooked up?
Ashley: You got it.
Travis is down, and he's good.
- Come on, Travis did it.
You know how scared he was the other day, and how scared he's been.
Marshall: Probably not half as scared as me.
Robert: Marshall.
Eyes up.
Ashley: Just a couple steps.
Marshall: Nah, I, I can't do this.
I don't wanna do this at all.
Ashley: We're gonna have to go all the way back up, you know, and around, and... Marshall: I'd rather go around.
Robert: All right, Avery.
Step up, come on.
I expected him to just jump right in there and for it to go fine, so I'm a little surprised by that.
He's gonna have to trust that rope, and there's no, there's no choice.
Lean back, shoulders back.
Avery: I got it.
Ashley: Avery was an absolute monster, she was a beast, and that doesn't surprise either of us.
Robert: Nah.
Ashley: She digs deep and she goes for it.
Avery: Awesome!
[dramatic chord] Treyton: [exhales] Oh, I found it!
Becca: Okay, we're coming, hold on!
Sutter: "Route will be easier, but your time will leak."
Claire: We don't have time to leak, so we gotta drop in.
Todd: We don't.
Becca: But... that's really scary.
Claire: You'll be fine.
Todd: I know.
Becca: Yo.
Claire: I'm in.
Sutter: I'm in.
Treyton: I'm in.
Becca: All right.
Guys have gotta talk me through it.
Ashley: I'm down, guys.
Marshall: [breathing heavily] Ashley: Good job, guys.
Ashley: I know, I know.
But he's pretty scared.
Marshall: I can't, I cannot-- Robert: You're there, you're already there, Marshall, just go.
Close your eyes and keep goin'.
You're, you're already there.
Ashley: You got this, Marshall.
Marshall: [shakily] Can I just do the hike?
Robert: Look.
What if-- Marshall: Can't I do the hike?
Robert: Um, Marshall, you are the man.
You can do this.
Close your eyes, close your eyes as tight as you can right now.
As tight as you can.
Go, one more scooch.
You got it.
Marshall: I can't.
Robert: Yes, you do!
Go, close your eyes.
As tight as you possibly can!
There, you're there!
Marshall: I can't.
Robert: You got it!
Marshall: I kinda kept on getting close, and then I'd open my eyes, and then I would like tense up a bunch, and then, finally, I just kept my eyes closed the whole time until I felt like there was no goin' back at that point.
Robert: Let go, let go!
Let go of everything.
Man 3: Keep goin', Marshall.
Robert: Get your fingers out, there you go.
Ashley: Yeah!
Robert: Woo!
Avery: You got it!
Marshall: [whimpers] Ashley: Woohoo!
Travis: [laughs] Ashley: You got it, buddy!
Marshall: [breathing sharply] Avery: Marshall!
Good job!
Marshall: I don't wanna be the reason my whole family has to, like, either get behind in the race or have to take a huge penalty.
As long as I get to the ground, that's what's important, I think.
Ashley: Great job, Marshall.
Marshall: It was a little scary, but, I'm kinda glad I did it, honestly.
[triumphant music] Robert: Takes some nerve.
I'm sure it was terrifying for all the kids, and so, extremely proud.
Travis: All right, next checkpoint, let's go.
Becca: Whoa!
Sutter: That's like a deep hole.
Claire: Holy cow.
Todd: 'Kay.
Claire: It's okay, deep breaths.
Treyton: You got this.
Becca: When we came around the corner and saw the mountain that we were gonna have to conquer rappelling, my heart just started racing really fast.
I gotta go down.
Claire: You're gonna do great.
- Uh, so, I will go down.
From that point on, it was keep calm, you can do this, your kids are tough, they can do this.
Claire, you're great, you're great, you're great!
Todd: Awesome!
She's over the edge.
Claire: [whispered] Okay.
Todd: So Sutter, you're gonna do this?
Sutter: Yep.
Todd: Oh-ho-ho, yeah!
Becca: Are you next, or is T?
Todd: He's next!
Sutter: No, I'm next.
Todd: Sutter's gonna do it!
Becca: Treyton, thank you!
Thank you.
Claire: You're gonna be fine, Mom!
Becca: Claire, you're awesome!
- It's a fun little ride!
You got this, Sutter!
You're doing great, baby!
Come on, bugs!
You're doin' great!
That's okay, that's okay!
Don't freak out, it's okay!
I'm excited to see Sutter come down.
I'm really happy that I, I get to be there for him.
Sutter: All right, I'm almost there.
- Okay, ready?
It's kinda weird to land.
Got it?
Todd: You're doin' awesome, bud!
Treyton: I ain't dead yet!
Claire: I ain't dead yet!
Becca: I ain't dead yet.
Claire: That's right, baby!
Todd: [laughs] - This is amazing, GoPro.
Todd: 'Kay, there you go.
Sit back into it, you're doin' awesome, babe.
Claire: Yeah, Mom, yes!
Boys: Yes!
Claire: I knew that if we were gonna do something hard, we were gonna have to do it fast.
I have no idea how the other family did.
I... hope that we gained a little bit of time by just speeding through everybody going down that.
[relieved yells] Claire: You're on ground, you're on ground.
Todd: I'm comin' over the edge!
Becca: You got it, babe!
Robert: We're not too far away, guys!
Avery: I see the flags are right there!
Robert: Good eyes, good eyes!
Marshall: I'm goin' first so I don't have to think about it.
Jsut get it over with.
[deep exhale] I really hate this.
Claire: Oh!
Todd: We can do anything, huh, guys?
Becca: We're a little crazy.
Todd: Oho!
Becca: Todd!
Todd: Oh, feet on the ground.
That was amazing!
Becca: We all made it down!
[happy laughter] Sutter: All of us!
Marshall: [heavy breathing] Ashley: Great job, Marshall!
I woulda hiked it, and I wouldn't have liked that, but... I definitely am glad I took this route.
It was definitely more fun, and it's something I've never done.
Now I'm the first one to the flag, so I think that's pretty special.
Ashley: Come on, Dad, come on!
Hurry!
Marshall: Run!
Avery: Run, Daddy!
Marshall: Get it open.
Avery: "Congratulations on being the first on Day Two.
You'll start sooner when it counts."
Ashley: [cheers] Robert: All right!
Ashley: Woo!
I wondered.
Todd: Yeah, Sutter!
Becca: Sutter, ah, look at you!
Todd: You're a pro, mister!
Becca: You little stinker!
Todd: [laughs] Becca: I'm comin' over!
[cheering] Sutter: Come on, Claire, let's go!
Claire: There's our flag, there's our flag!
Becca: Don't trip.
Sutter, you getta read it.
You did awesome things today.
Sutter: "You're not the first, but the race isn't through."
Todd: Woo!
Okay, guys.
Becca: Let's go find our camp.
♪♪ Colin: The Harkrider and Pace families had a lot of obstacles to overcome today, especially Marshall, whose long delay atop the first rappel allowed the Pace family to close the gap to just 8 minutes.
- What'd you think when you finally went over the top of that tall one and you were, it was, it was over, like you had to go?
- I had my eyes closed until about halfway, and then I opened them for a sec, and I was like, dang, that's cool, and then I closed them again.
Both: [laugh] - I didn't wanna accidentally look down.
- I knew you were gonna do it, you know, I knew you were.
I didn't have any, any doubt.
- Took like five tries.
Ashley: Yeah, well, you know what?
Who cares?
You did it.
Marshall: Made it.
Ashley: Sometimes the hardest things to do are the most rewarding in the end.
- Definitely.
Todd: This journey, and in this adventure especially, it's kind of a celebration of life.
We miss Curren, um, he's kind of like our little guardian angel, I think.
Becca: It reminds us every day not to take anything for granted, and, um, and to really appreciate the little things in our days that make life great.
Todd: Just having all five of us here together as opposed to, you know, Treyton potentially having to drop out of the race, and then being able to have this day after that.
Becca: Yeah, for sure.
Todd: It was amazing.
Becca: The things that we conquered together and the support that we were to each other, that was huge to me.
Todd: No one gets left behind, no one gets left alone when they're injured or when they're celebrating.
We're all there together.
Becca: Hey, the stars are out tonight, which is way cool.
[insects whirring] [anticipatory music] Avery: Well, good morning, Mom!
- Good morning, Avery.
Avery: It's the last day.
- It is the last day.
Avery: Are you ready?
- I think so.
I just gotta get my feet warmed up.
[laughs] Avery: Yeah, it's cold.
- It is cold.
I was glad that we were all snuggled together last night.
Colin: As dawn breaks on the families, the Harkriders have found confidence in themselves and their eight minute lead.
Ashley: It's the morning of Day Three.
We've had a chance to start a fire, get some food in our bellies.
Now we got a fire in our bellies, and we're ready to go.
Robert: We gotta hustle all day long.
We're gonna help each other, right?
Ashley: Yep.
Colin: While the Pace family, closer than ever, is far from ready to throw in the towel.
Claire: Here we go.
It's time for our comeback.
Todd: Guys, we've got the tools, we've got the confidence.
Becca: We have the strength, I mean, you guys, we are strong.
Claire: Our family woke up this morning really energized.
Becca: We have been very strong this whole time.
Todd: Just do our best.
Yesterday was just such an adrenaline rush.
We're ready to hit the trail.
We wanna be together at the finish.
That's, that's number one.
- We're still in this race.
Todd: I'm ready to catch these guys today.
Claire: We're gonna make that known, and... I think we're gonna win.
Todd: Oh, this is way lighter than it was yesterday.
Sutter: Oh, yeah?
Todd: I think that I'm stronger.
[laughs] Treyton: Yeah, you're stronger.
Becca: Maybe you're stronger!
Todd: Yeah, that's true, yep.
Robert: Open it up.
Ashley: What's it say, Avery?
Avery: "Welcome to Day Three.
"Your dreams are within reach if you're willing to make the climb."
Ashley: All right, let's go.
All right, follow Marshall, he's got the GPS.
Colin: This is Day Three.
Navigation will be key as they travel three miles along rimlines of steep canyon drop-offs and down into a dry river bed full of giant boulders before racing to the finish line to be the first to raise their flag.
[heavy breathing] Marshall: Go.
I'm prepared to work.
I'm feelin' good.
I've got the competitive mentality.
I'm ready to power through the last day.
Sideways.
Up that.
We're just gonna keep our pace, you know.
We're gonna go fast, but we don't wanna burn ourselves out.
Avery: Come on, guys let's pick it up.
Pain is temporary.
Todd: Grab the coordinates and the clue.
Sutter: Yeah, yeah.
Claire: When it comes to the reason why people take part of these experiences, it's to grow closer as a family and to learn those new things about each other and really grow and make memories.
Becca: Steady pace, steady pace.
Strong pace.
Claire: I know that we've created a bunch, so I think we've already won that way.
Now we just gotta win the money.
Todd: Stay to the rock.
Becca: It's all rock.
Todd: Yep, you guys are doin' great.
Marshall: What happened?
Did we lose the trail?
Ashley: What did the clue say?
Marshall: Just said climb.
Travis: Up, up.
Robert: Clue's to climb the mountain.
Travis: Have we passed it?
Robert: We need to be down here, guys.
Be lookin'!
Ashley: You sure it's down that way?
Robert: Yeah, I think we might've made a navigational error, we might need to be low.
Ashley: I thought it said to go high.
Marshall: Are you 100% sure?
Robert: We have passed it.
Ashley: All right.
Robert: We gotta drop back.
Boys: [breathing heavily] Becca: Steady pace, guys.
Dude, we got up here fast.
Todd: Yeah, we did.
The more time I think we're on the ground, I think the more chance we have to maybe make up time.
At the end of the day, it comes down to avoiding mistakes.
We'll just do our best to stay positive and push each other along throughout the day.
See the trail up ahead of us?
Marshall: I see them all the way over there.
Avery: Oh no!
Dad, they're right there!
Robert: Come on, come on, come on!
Marshall: Where's the trail?
Robert: All right, we made a mistake, it's not gonna kill us, but we gotta keep goin'.
- They're right there behind us.
We're just thinkin' to ourselves, we gotta keep up the pace, or else they're gonna catch us.
I see a trail, here's the trail.
Robert: All right, come on guys.
This is our chance to be makin' up ground.
[dramatic percussive beat] Becca: Man, I'm proud of you guys.
Claire: I'm proud of you, mom.
Becca: Stay left.
Todd: Follow that.
How's everyone doin' back there?
All: Good.
Todd: Good, okay.
You're awesome.
Becca: You got it, Treyton.
We stay together, remember?
Sutter: Oh, yeah.
Becca: Always together.
- I think a big thing, especially after Treyton's fall, was just stay together.
The whole reason we came on this show was to get closer, and to connect with each other.
- That's how we are.
That's how we do things.
We just stick together no matter what.
Todd: We'll figure it out together, guys.
Robert: Okay.
Double time, double time!
They're right on us.
Be looking!
Looking below us.
I-- do I see it?
Marshall: Do you?
Robert: I see 'em, I see 'em, I see 'em!
Go, go, go, go, go!
Marshall: Oh, I see it!
Ashley: He sees it!
Robert: Come on, everybody, on the move!
Ashley: Run, Travis, run!
Travis: [moans] Marshall: You're good, Trav, come on.
Robert: C'mon, champ, you got it.
It's okay, don't get frustrated!
- "The ledges down will be your guide, but it's up for you to do the work."
Colin: Having clambered up, families will now have to navigate their way down through a maze-like canyon past dead-end cliffs.
But making it this far has been a hard-fought trek, and Travis has hit his wall.
Marshall: Hey, look, look, look, no one's mad.
You just have to keep your head.
You can't get frustrated with every single wrong turn.
They're gonna happen.
When I was in the hospital, my brother and sister, they were cheerin' me up and kinda helping me through that, like, time.
Just keep up your pace, are you tired?
Do you want me to take anything from your bag?
- No.
- All right.
Now that I was here, and able to motivate them, I felt like that was really important.
I was cryin' yesterday, it's not a big deal.
Colin: When things seem impossible, it's amazing to have family there to help pull you through.
Marshall was able to overcome his limitations with his family by his side, and it's inspiring to see him help his brother through this time of need.
Sutter: How long here?
Claire: Are we going up, dad?
Todd: It's showing that way 250 feet.
Keep goin' up, you got a good path, keep goin' up, it's on top, I bet.
Claire: Found it!
"The ledges down will be your guide, but it's up to you to do the work."
Okay, ledges are that way.
Ashley: Doin' well, you're doin' well, guys, keep it up.
Marshall: I think we started off a little shaky, lost some time, but now we've turned it around, we're a lot more positive.
Robert: Everybody havin' fun?
Avery: Yeah.
Marshall: Yup.
Ashley: Doin' great.
Yeah, follow Marshall.
Go through that tunnel.
Marshall: I think I've been holdin' up honestly better than I expected.
Here, mom.
Robert: Come to help each other, come on!
Ashley: Come on, Trav.
Marshall: At first I was kinda worried if I could keep up or not, but I think I'm definitely keepin' up as fast as I can.
Robert: Oh, my goodness.
Avery: This is not right.
Robert: Oh, no.
Avery: Dad?
Anything?
Marshall: Where are we?
Robert: I don't know.
[birds chirping] - Five hundred feet this direction, guys, kind of-- Claire: 'Kay.
- Back behind us, I think we gotta go the way that-- Treyton: I've seen it, I've seen where we need to go.
Todd: Treyton saw it, Treyton's there.
Becca: Go, go, go, Treyton.
Todd: Can you get through there?
It is to our right.
Sutter: No, you can't go through there.
Treyton: Yeah, I know, but we have to go up and around.
Todd: Oh, shoot.
Becca: Yeah.
Claire: Oh my gosh.
Todd: The ledges-- Treyton: I'm here!
Claire: Not getting frustrated with the GPS is a big challenge for our family.
[breathing heavily] Left?
You said this way?
[normally] I don't know how we lost that trail.
It was one of those situations where you feel like you're doing everything right.
Treyton: Uh, yeah, more rocks.
Todd: I feel we got, like, we gotta get low, remember?
Claire: Oh my gosh, I am getting very frustrated and trying not to.
Becca: 'Kay.
Todd: This is too steep over here, guys.
Claire: Yeah, no kidding, dad!
Becca: Where's the waypoint, tell us what direction to go.
Todd: It's that direction.
- That direction?
Todd: There's a trail down there, but I'm not sure how to get to it.
- OH MY GOOOSH!
Todd: Hey!
Claire: I need a time out.
Becca: Okay, so, here's the deal.
We broke down.
I was a little bit nervous for our family.
For the first time in this whole thing, we were like, taking it out on each other, and that's not what we do.
We weren't remembering what our ultimate goal is, and our ultimate goal is to be strong as a family.
Todd: Let's just help one another.
- We gotta keep that going until we get to the end.
Todd: [sighs resignedly] Sometimes we're gonna make wrong turns in life, I'm sorry, guys.
[serious music] Robert: I see it, I see it.
Ashley: Okay.
Travis: You see it?
Ashley: Are you sure?
Robert: Yes, I absolutely see it.
- Okay, then, dad is gonna get us there, c'mon.
Marshall: All right, follow him.
[laughs] Quick, quick, so we can build back some time.
Ashley: Quick, but safe.
Becca: Keep moving, you guys, we got this.
We're on the right track!
Stay positive, stay positive.
Colin: With both families back on track, it's now an all-out race to the finish as they sprint the final half-mile.
Ashley: I hear championship music!
Travis: I'm enjoyin' this.
Becca: We got it, just keep doing what we're doing, you guys, we gained time before, we can do it again, and we've made mistakes before.
But you know what got us through it?
Was listening to each other.
Avery: We got this!
Marshall: We're almost!
Travis: Dad, [indistinct] Robert: They are.
Ashley: Every second counts.
- Hey, guys!
Avery: I see Colin!
Ashley: You do?
Avery: Yes!
Colin: Come on, come on, keep goin'!
Avery: When my foot goes in the water, I don't really notice it.
Not focus on the cold, but focus on winning.
Ashley: You got it, Avery!
Robert: I'm gonna lose a shoe!
- We're going through this water, then I was thinking like, they could be right on our heels.
Treyton: Guys, down this way.
Becca: This way?
Okay.
- Yeah, keep goin'.
Colin: Harkrider family, you are at the finish line area, but if you wanna win this thing, you need to assemble your flagpole and raise your flag, get to quick work!
Robert: All right, guys, y'all handle the flag, I'll do the digging.
- Since Marshall's injury, our family motto has been "Overcome and rise."
Robert: We really did want to affirm for Marshall, his leg was not gonna be a limitation, now or down the road, he can do anything he wants to do.
Colin: Let me test it.
Harkrider family, you are the winners of Survivalists!
All: [cheer] There it is, the Harkrider flag flying proud in the air.
Well done, well done, how's that feel?
Robert: An incredible week.
We've had ups and downs, a lot of challenges, but we persevered.
- Marshall, you've faced some adversity in the last couple years.
What does it mean to be able to complete something like this?
- I think it's important to show that anybody can do whatever they want, no matter their situation, and I think I've proved that here.
When I got my first prosthetic, I had to learn how to like, walk again, and then eventually how to run again.
Kinda like this race, I felt like I had to tackle some challenging things that would help my family in the long run.
I just thought it was important for me to give my all and make sure that I wasn't the one holding them back.
Colin: You've also had to face some fears of your own out there.
What might you say to somebody else who is facing fear?
- The harder the thing is that you have to do, prolly the better reward it's gonna bring for you, so definitely tackle your challenges head on.
Robert: He's out here climbing, trekking, rappeling.
It just shows how confident he is as a human being.
Ashley: We have all watched and supported Marshall as he rose beyond the incredible challenges that he faced, but to come here as a family, to push ourselves and see that we can overcome, with um, Marshall's support and Marshall's guidance is just a valuable lesson for all of us.
Colin: I did tell you there'd be a reward at the end of this thing.
Open these up, that's $10,000 cash!
Ashley: Lookie-look!
Woo!
- Congratulations, Harkrider family, winners of Survivalists, well done!
Super proud of you.
Robert: If you had asked me less than two years ago, would we be doing this?
Not in a million years.
[flapping] Todd: Oh, I see our flags.
Becca: Lead us in, Claire.
Todd: Let's go, let's go, let's go.
It's not fun to lose.
We were hoping to, you know, be the, the comeback dogs and chase 'em down, but I think that one of the strengths of our family is that we kinda work through things together.
Becca: Our family is strong, and we've always been strong, and we got through something hard together, and we will continue to get through hard things together.
Colin: Congratulations, Pace family, you have completed Survivalists!
Well done!
Todd, how are you feelin'?
Todd: I'm proud of our family.
Uh, there was a few bumps and bruises along the way.
We've learned a lot about each other, and even at the end, we found our strengths, and uh, came together as a family.
Colin: Claire, you told me you're super competitive, you love to win.
Talk me through how you're feelin' right now.
- [tearfully] Up until the end, we, we really thought that we were gonna overtake 'em, because we were close.
- We're all here together.
It was awesome that I got to spend a whole week with my big sister.
We definitely got a chance to communicate a little better, and work together.
- When we're with each other, we're all kind of each other's best friends.
- There's a lot of things you can't control, you can't control the elements, we couldn't control the challenges, but we could control the way we felt about each other, and keeping each other strong.
- We've grown as a family, we've grown individually and we've grown collectively.
Our family is stronger through this experience.
You know, in the end, I mean, it would've been, it would've been great to win, it'd be great to have that money, but money comes and goes.
Family is forever.
- Pace family, a lot to be proud of.
You finished Survivalists.
Todd: All right.
Guys, we did it, we're here.
I love you guys.
