Do you have a, I mean, since you were the one with the founding idea, what is it about Tom Petty or his music that pulled you in?
- Well, here it's gonna get a little cultural, being a biracial kid, my dad being kind of black bourgeoisie and a jazz professor, and my mom being a white woman from Louisiana, and so in my household there was Hank Williams and Marvin Gaye.
And so I like American music and American songwriting and I don't think there's anything like it.
And Southern songwriters seem to be more willing to incorporate everything.
And the other thing that I love is that he's a band guy.
He likes...
He brings these songs to the band and then let the band have at it.
And that's always been my approach too.
I always wanted that.
We're not trying to be a typical tribute band.
The idea is that everybody's gotta have a skill set that they're bringing to it.
They're bringing a voice to this music.
We just don't get anybody, they've gotta have a voice and a style and something that adds a sentence to the paragraph.
- Yeah.
Well, what a fun, what a fun gig.
And obviously, you guys, and you guys, I mean the younger generation in this thing, and we've got second generation guys on "11th and Grant" here.
Such a fresh, alive, smart, connected sound.
And the interactions between you guys, as a band, is really stunning to watch.
- [Chris] Yeah, we have a good time together.
- That's one of the most fun parts about this band is the musicianship and being able to interact with people and see where they're going during a solo and feed off of fem and use that energy.
That's the most fun part of this band, I think.
- Well, and I have to, I'll just point out from my perspective, watching and listening to you play, it's very symphonic instead of just sort of laying down a backbeat and being sort of on a linear plane, it's real arc like.
- Yeah, that's a big goal of mine is trying to work with the peaks and the valleys of a song.
And during a solo with Rick, I'm working with what he's doing and rising with him and falling with him and trying to match Ryan with the same sort of thing.
- The musicianship is just, you guys are all exceptional players.
And when people are playing good stuff, you want to participate and, you know-- - Wanna contribute.
- Contribute to.
It's so much fun to support Rick while he takes something to a high place.
And yeah, it's...
It's a good band.
- Tribute bands, it's kind of an insult when you think, if somebody's in a tribute band, like, "Oh, they've gotta look like the band "and they've gotta play everything."
And I've always thought of this like in the symphonic world, you've got symphonies that their specialty is like Mahler, and another is like Bach, but they do it, again, their way.
And it's like, we do Tom Petty in that sense.
We're not gonna do it like Tom Petty.
We have certain hooks for certain songs that have to be there.
But after that it's up to us.
And I love the freedom of that.
I don't think I could be in a Tom Petty band where I had to play the same thing every night.
- Well, and it would ruin the music because, obviously, the invention of music in real time is what it's all about.
And that's where the record industry and the recording industry has really created a problem 'cause people fall in love with the cut that way.
And then when you play it and you do it different than the record, even the band that made the record, everybody's angry.
"No, that's not what you did."
I mean, they want that photograph, that sound photograph, but we refuse to do it.
We say, "No, no, no, no, no, this is a route.
"This is the song, this is the lyric "and we're gonna make it happen today."
- Well, it's one of the great things about Tom Petty's music to begin with is that it speaks differently to everybody.
And a lot of what he wrote is very broad in the sense that the lyrics could mean different things, but they mean different things to each person.
And that's what makes his music so universally adored, but also what makes his music so great is it speaks to people in ways that they didn't anticipate, or if that's different from what would resonate with Ethan is different than what would resonate with me.
And this band honors that, in a way, by doing the songs the way we wanna do them.
And everybody brings their own interpretation to their particular part.

Not literally, but-- - We're just finding this out - Figuratively.
Yeah, well, I'd played music most of my life.
And then I was in a band here.
We were together for about 10 years and then I stopped playing.
And I don't think I played for probably eight or nine years, played anything.
And there's the part of you that if you've got that creative side, if you don't nurture that, it kind of dies, right.
And so fortuitously, I got into this group with these great guys and these great musicians and brought that part of me back.
I mean, it was resurrected.
And, you know, I mean, it's really changed my life in a lot of ways.
And I have a very high stress job outside of this, and so this is my release.
It bleeds into my everyday life as well, so it's what I think about most of the time is this band and these guys, so.
- Just as a sidebar, your singing voice, your voice print, I mean, it's great all by itself, but singing Petty songs really, really works.
Just the way that you enunciate, the way that you phrase, the way that you bring the meaning of the lyric and the phrase shape of the melodic line, it's just killer strong.
- Well, Petty's always been a, has been a huge part of my life.
My daughters love Tom Petty.
My mom was in "She's the One," the movie, "She's the One" with Jennifer Aniston and that's an all Tom Petty soundtrack.
So it's been sort of a big part of my life forever.
And my daughter believes that I wrote "Free Falling," so please don't tell her that I didn't.
She's like, "You wrote that song."
I don't know where that came from.
I think it's just 'cause I sang it so much while I was in the car and they were in their car seats.

(feel-good rock music continues) (feel-good rock music continues) (feel-good rock music continues) - I remember from talking to Doc for the first time, I said, "I'm sorry I didn't get back to you right away.
"I was camping at Pine Creek with my family."
And he said, "That's one of the things about this band "is family first."
That's important to all of us that you don't just jump in and say, "Hey guys, I gotta go to town, I have an audition."
It's like, "No, do your camping, family first."
- And to that, I had a good friend pass this winter and my life was a little bit of a mess.
And, yeah, Doc and all you guys were just like, just very much accommodating.
Very much like, "That's the thing you need to put first."
It's cool to be cared for in a band context.
- Sometimes your band mates are the only thing that's holding your life together.
'Cause things can fall apart so completely, but you know you've got this gig coming up and you know you're gonna be in a safe territory where yourself is enough.
And however you are, you're still embraced.
And that's huge.
- For me, the culture being, as long as I've been doing this stuff, all the bands that just like, "It's not rock and roll," and, you know, "What do you mean you gotta take your kids to school?"
It's like, "That's not rock and roll."
It's like, "I think that's really rock and roll."
Pops is taken the kids to school.
Two of us here are grandparents, you know-- - We won't say who.
- Yeah.
And... (Chris chuckles) And that kid's the joy of my life.
You know what I mean?
So guess what?
If I, "Hey guys, I can't do that.
"We've gotta move that gig "'cause I'm gonna go see my grandkid."
It's gonna happen.
That's a thing that I wanted to foster in this project was, is that you know, that it's a family inside, but it's not more important than your family outside.
