Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship>> DAVID: HEY, EVERYBODY, WELCOME TO THE WRAP.
KEN BARLOW, METEOROLOGIST EXTRAORDINAIRE DECIDED TO STICK AROUND.
YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE US SOME TIPS ON YOUR CRAFT.
>> YES, IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT A CRAFT.
>> DAVID: WEATHER BREAKING.
>> I CAN'T RUN.
>> DAVID: I APOLOGIZE, WE DON'T HAVE A GREEN SCREEN.
HOPEFULLY YOU CAN SEE THIS AS AN ANALOGY TO YOUR NORMAL CRAFT.
I'VE ALWAYS HEARD THE WEATHERMAN'S JOB IS TO SPEAK EXTEMPORANEOUSLY.
IS IT TRUE YOU JUST SPEAK AND ARE KNOCKING IT OUT?
>> SOMETIMES IT'S BLATANTLY OBVIOUS.
WE'RE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE SCRIPTS.
ANCHORS HAVE THE SCRIPTS, SPORTS HAVE THEIR SCRIPTS WRITTEN OUT.
WEATHER MAKES UP WHAT'S ON THE TOP OF OUR HEADS.
>> DAVID: DO YOU HAVE A ROUGH OUTLINE IN YOUR HEAD?
>> HOW YOU USE THE MAPS.
THE MAPS ARE MY SCRIPTS.
SO ON THIS MAP I WANT TO START WITH A STORM JUST MISSING US TO THE SOUTHEAST, LA CROSSE IS GETTING A LITTLE, ROCHESTER IS GETTING A LITTLE.
I CAN START THAT WAY SAYING THIS IS JUST LIKE THE STORM WE'RE GETTING THIS WEEK.
LOOKS LIKE THE RAIN IS GOING TO SHIFT SOUTHEAST.
I CAN SHIFT, I CAN SAY BECAUSE THE REASON IT'S MISSING IS THE GIANT HIGH PRESSURE -- THAT WAS A QUICK CHANGE -- WOULD YOU HAVE GUIDED THAT YOURSELF ON YOUR BROADCAST?
YOU HAVE THAT PEN AS YOUR CLICK ERR.
>> DAVID: YES.
>> AND THEN 75 DEGREES THAT IS WHY IT DIDN'T SNOW IN MINNESOTA.
NOT ONLY IS IT SNOWING IN ROCHESTER, 75 DEGREES HERE, THEN YOU CAN TALK ABOUT HOW NICE IT'S GOING TO GET, HIGH PRESSURE AREA, NICE WEATHER, PUSHED THE STORM AWAY.
>> DAVID: CHANGE GEARS, IF YOU WANT TO CLICK YOUR PEN AGAIN, OKLAHOMA HAS A SITUATION.
>> THAT'S A BIG TORNADO.
THAT'S OKLAHOMA CITY.
SO I WOULD CALL THIS A MAP PROBABLY IN THE SPRINGTIME.
BECAUSE WE HAVE SNOW TO THE NORTH, TORNADOS, MOST ACTIVE IN MAY.
SO SOMETIMES IN THE SPRING TO ME.
THAT'S WHAT I WOULD THINK.
SNOWSTORM HERE, FRONT PROBABLY HERE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE STORM THERE'S SUNSHINE.
THIS IS A STORM BREEDING WEATHER, THIS IS WHERE BEAUTIFUL AND SUNNY, THE HIGH WHISPY CLOUDS ARE MOVING IN.
>>>> DAVID: YOU GOT INTO THIS BECAUSE YOU LOVE THE WEATHER WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SIT HOME AS A PERSON AND SIT ON THE PORCH AND WATCH THE STORM JUST HAPPEN?
>> NEVER.
>> DAVID: YOU NEVER GET TO DO THAT ANYMORE.
DO YOU FEEL DENIED?
>> ARE YOU KIDDING?
MY JUICES FLOW.
I LIKE BEING ON TV AND IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD THINK YOU GET NERVOUS AND ANXIOUS WHEN YOU GET ON IN THOSE VOLATILE SITUATIONS AND THAT'S WHEN I FEEL THE CALMEST.
IT'S WHEN YOU'RE UNDER PRESSURE AND PEOPLE ARE DEPENDING ON YOU, THEY NEED INFORMATION.
DON'T MESS IT UP.
>> DAVID: KEN, THANKS SO MUCH FOR PLAYING ALONG.
