The Maysville and Washington Turnpike Company was incorporated January 29th, 1829.
The company then built a road from Maysville to Washington, a town in Mason County four miles away.
The road at 13 toll houses and six covered bridges.
It was the first road west of the Alleghenies.
Made of crushed compacted stone and Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced a series of proposals dealing with slavery.
On January 29th, 1858, many historians believe the compromise of 1850, as the proposals are called today, temporarily ease tensions between the north and the South and delayed the civil war by ten years.
On January 30th, 1900, a sniper shot William Gobel, one of the two candidates who claimed victory in the disputed 1899 election for governor.
Gilbert would take the oath of office after being shot, then die on February 3rd.
Eight baseball teams joined forces to form the National League.
On February 2nd, 1876, and one of those teams was in Louisville.
Loretta Lynn signed with the Zero record label on February 2nd, 1960, and the label would put out her first hit song Honky Tonk Girl, which went to number 14 on the country music charts.
And those are the highlights this week in Kentucky History.
