Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(gentle music) - Is it so strange that I want to spend time with my granddaughter and with you?
- We're really interested in exploring the three generation dynamic in this second part of the season.
And there is always a fascinating thing to meet the central character's parent and to try and just match up what characteristics they share and which ones they're definitely pushing back against.
- It was fascinating to be presented with somebody who is your father.
You know, it's really interesting.
I got to meet him a tiny bit just online before he arrived.
He's the warmest man.
We hit it off straight away.
And the point is the writing gives you the relationship.
We were given a very clear, playable relationship.
- Seriously?
- Can't we relax first?
- He is a kind of a strange, really hard, rough man who has a bad relationship to his daughter.
- Mom and Granddad don't get on and they haven't gotten on for years.
So the dynamic is very sticky and frosty and strange.
But Morgan really, really wants it to work out because she wants to get to know her extended family.
I've spoken to him on the phone and stuff, but we've never met.
- She's getting grown up, not a teenager anymore.
And I mean, I think that's one of the reasons that he comes.
- Let's take a selfie.
- No, never.
- They get on really well.
I think they're interested to know things about each other.
And Morgan thinks he's pretty cool, and is liking the fact that she's got a granddad, and a male that she's actually related to in her family.
And she just hopes that that can be the same for her mom and her granddad.
(camera clicks) (both chuckling) - There's much more easy affection.
There appears to be an effortless pride.
And Annika, I think is wondering, "Where was that when I was growing up?"
- We don't know very much about Annika's family in the first season.
We're given a glimpse.
You know, they brought her to Scotland when she was a teenager.
And then when her father decided the family were going to return to Norway, that was when Annika decided to stay and train to become a police woman.
And you know that it's a volatile relationship but that's all you know.
This season, that kind of gets blown apart.
So you find out why it's such a volatile relationship.
