The first ever extreme family adventure competition show.
I'm your host, Colin O'Brady, and I'm an explorer who loves to prove the impossible... Summit!
...is possible.
From becoming the first person to cross Antarctica solo, unsupported, and fully human powered, to climbing Mt.
Everest.
Top of the world!
I've set ten world records, and I'm a New York Times best-selling author.
I have learned that if you push yourself, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
Now, my wife and I work to inspire kids in their communities to achieve their biggest dreams.
[whooping] I know firsthand the value of pushing yourself in the wild, and now each week I'll be challenging two families.
Each here for deeply personal reasons, to push themselves further than they've ever been pushed before.
They will head out on a three-day adventure of a lifetime that will test them physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- We've always done everything together.
- I know, but you have to do this.
Colin: They will learn to see loved ones in a new light, rebuild relationships, and find strength as a family.
- For anybody who's ever doubted me, you don't need to doubt me anymore.
Colin: But in the end, only one family can come out on top and take home the $10,000 cash prize.
♪♪ - It definitely turns up the competition.
Colin: This week, the Goulds from Gilbert, Arizona.
- Sometimes you just have to tell yourself you're gonna do it and hit it head on.
Got this!
Colin: Will battle it out with the Hopkins from Mesa, Arizona.
- We're never alone, we're always there for each other.
Colin: Who will come out on top?
- Steady pace wins the race.
- The other team just passed us.
- Go, go, go, go, go!
Colin: And be this week's Survivalists?
[birds cawing] Hopkins: We are the Hopkins family from Mesa, Arizona.
- You can start.
- No, you start.
- Okay, I'll start.
We are a close-knit family, bonded together like glue.
Child: If we work together, we can do anything.
- I just wanna win.
Goulds: We're the Gould family from Gilbert, Arizona.
- We love the outdoors.
- I'd describe our family as pretty adventurous.
Child: We're all super competitive people, we all try to win.
- Welcome, so excited to have you here.
[cheering] Hopkins, tell me a little bit about yourselves.
- When you see the Hopkins, it's trouble.
[laughter] - We are a like, different family from others.
- We're all adopted, so.
- We come in different shades in this family, and we're here to show the world we are strong and we are one.
- What are you hoping to get out of this experience as a family?
- At the end we just hope to just be tighter than ever before.
- Nathan, you think you have what it takes to win?
- Yeah, I'm pretty competitive.
Back home at my high school there's always these people telling me that I'm too weak to do anything that I like, dream of.
I'm here to prove to the bullies that I can do this, and if I can do this, then I can do anything that comes in my way.
Colin: Carriona, how are you feeling about being out here with the family?
- Well, I'm pretty nervous.
I'm a little bit of like, an independent person, I'm not really a team player.
As we grow older, I've definitely kind of disconnected from my family at times, and stuff, so I'm hoping being here kind of connects us, you know.
We can't do this individually, we have to do it together, like as a team.
- Can you tell me a little bit about the Hopkins family flag?
- The lion represents our courage, a family that have had lots of tests, but none that we cannot overcome.
- I love that.
Now, Goulds, how you feelin'?
[excited overlapping chatter] What are some of your deeper objectives as a family comin' out here?
- With Autumn leaving the nest, we have a chapter closing in our family book.
- I'm super excited to go to college, but I'm gonna miss my family.
- I'm really excited for this family adventure, it's kind of like our last hurrah, sending Autumn off.
- Me an Autumn have a really good sisterly connection, so there's definitely gonna be a void that can't be filled by goats.
[chuckles] - Do you wanna tell me a little bit about the Gould family flag?
- Our flag is a goat, we have 36 goats, we started goat yoga.
Goat yoga is basically how it sounds, yoga with goats.
And we're the greatest of all time.
- Yeah, there you go.
[laughter] - With that said, you're about to undertake a strenuous, three-day, thirteen-mile expedition through heavily wooded and mountainous countryside.
Day one, you'll hike up almost five miles, and scale a cliff face that's higher than an eleven-story building, before setting up camp for the night.
Day two will put you up against a steep, grueling trail, and a summit to 10,000 feet.
The final day you'll race downhill through rocky riverbeds to the finish line, where the first family to raise their flag will be declared the winner.
Trust me, it is not gonna be easy out there.
Did you guys wanna know what we're playing for?
All: Yeah!
Colin: All right, all right.
We've got these custom backpacks here, why don't you check out what's inside?
- Open it, open, open.
Child: Oh, my gosh!
[excited chattering] Colin: That's right, those backpacks are stuffed with $10,000 cash.
But only one family is going home with both backpacks.
- It definitely turns up the competition a lot.
- Families, before I release you into the wild, I'm gonna give you the opportunity to visit the General Store where you can grab all the essential items to survive your three-day extreme expedition.
But you'll only have ninety seconds inside to find everything you need.
In order to get more time, I've set up some survival challenges.
For each challenge you win, you'll add an additional thirty seconds to your clock.
The very first challenge that we have today for you, is knot tying.
[dramatic music] All right, I'm gonna need you guys to elect one member of your family to compete.
Who'd you guys nominate?
Nathan?
Nathan: I'm feeling pretty excited, 'cause I'm gonna put the knots that I've been studying for a while to use.
- In this challenge, we've got six essential survival knots, you'll need to tie each knot to the item below, hoist it up, connect it to the anchor, and hopefully it holds.
You will have seven minutes to tie as many of those knots as you possibly can.
Three, two, one, go!
[family cheering] All right, he's doing the bowline knot first, looks like he's confidently tying this one.
[family cheering] He got one, what's he going to next?
Taught-line hitch, I'm impressed, Nathan does know his knots pretty well.
Oh!
A little bit too long, it's about getting the slack right.
There we go.
Two knots down, now he's moving on to the sheet bend knot.
[family cheering] We got the fisherman's knot next.
He's not even hesitating, he knows 'em all.
All right, he's gonna move on to the clove hitch.
- Come on!
Go go, get it up, get it up, get it up.
- We got the trucker's hitch next.
- I forgot this one.
Colin: Oh, he's having trouble, this is the first time he's hesitated.
Nathan: Uh.
- All right, Nathan, you've only got one minute left, one minute left.
Maria: Just do whatever you think it is.
Do it, Nathan, just don't quit.
Don't quit.
Colin: He's got the loop!
- Yes!
Colin: Five, four, three, two, one.
Whoa, time's up.
All right, Nathan, congratulations.
You got five of the six knots tied.
Looks like you got the sixth knot tied, but didn't quite get it off the ground in time.
- I knew the knots, I just kind of went brain dead for a little second there.
Colin: It's time to see if Russ can do it a little bit quicker.
Watching Nathan rip through that makes me a little bit nervous.
- Three, two, one, go.
[family cheering] All right, looks like Nathan he's going to the bowline first.
April: You've been practicing!
There you go.
Colin: All right, let's see if he can get the first one.
Okay, he's going to the fisherman's knot next.
[family cheering] See if that holds.
[family cheering] That is, uh, not a fisherman's knot.
Goulds: Oh, no!
Colin: You have to redo that one.
If I gotta be honest, he's lookin' a little bit less confident than Nathan was at this point.
[Goulds cheering] Two down, let's see if he's got another four in him.
Remember, they're playing for thirty seconds extra in the General Store here.
Three down, three to go.
This is a trucker's hitch.
This was the one that tripped Nathan up.
Oh, two to go, the time's a-tickin'.
It's gonna be close.
Get the clove hitch, five down.
Let's see if he's got the taught-line hitch knot.
It's down to the wire.
Kids: Go dad!
[cheering] Colin: Let's see!
Oh!
Congratulations, you got all six tied, you are the winner of the first competition, congratulations.
- Feels almost like a relief, I feel like I've done my part, and now my family's gotta do the rest.
- All right, families!
For the second competition we have axe throwing.
[dramatic music] For this challenge there's gonna be two participants from each family.
Who's it gonna be for the Goulds?
- We are gonna have April and Autumn go.
Autumn: I have experience using axes to chop wood, but never throwing them into things.
- And for the Hopkins?
- Kenneth and Carriona.
Carriona: I'm just thinking, like, my family really needs this.
Colin: Okay, well, the way this competition works, each person from each team will throw the axe three times.
The outer ring is 10 points, the inner ring is 20 points, the red bullseye is 100 points.
Whoever has the highest total wins an extra 30 seconds in the General Store.
You guys ready?
All: Yeah!
Colin: All right, come on up, let's do it!
- You got this, daddy!
- We definitely need the win, so hopefully we'll be able to hit the nail on the head.
Colin: Ready... Autumn: Axe throwing is something that I didn't really prepare for.
Colin: Throw.
[axe thuds] [Goulds cheering] [axe clatters] [crowd awws] - Well, almost a bullseye, Autumn.
After the first round, we've got the Goulds with twenty points, and we've got the Hopkins with zero.
- Focus and throw, that's the strategy right now.
- All right, round two, you guys ready?
- My first throw, I was just kind of winging it.
- On my go.
- So hopefully on these next two tries it'll just get better and better.
- Go.
[axes clatter] [all aww] It's still twenty to zero.
So this is the last throw for you guys before you hand it off to your other family member.
Kenneth: If I use my hand, I'm like, okay.
Hopefully, hopefully.
[axes clatter] Of course, it drops.
[all aww] - Second members of each family, come on up.
Carriona: As I'm grabbing the axe I'm thinking, "Oh, I've got this."
- She looks like she's handled an axe before.
- This gonna be like a cakewalk.
- Go.
[axes clatter] - Definitely isn't easy.
- You've each got two more throws.
- The blade would be right there.
[axes clatter] Ah!
But then it would just fall off.
- This is the very last throw.
- No pressure.
- The Goulds lead 20-0.
- I'm nervous.
- You got it, Carriona, you got it.
Colin: Three, two, one, go.
[axes clatter] [all aww] - Oh man.
[clapping] - Good job guys.
- Good job, mom.
- The Gould family are the winner of the axe throwing competition, congratulations.
Autumn, not only is she gonna be a college student soon, but if that doesn't work out, you know, maybe you have a future in axe throwing.
[chuckling] Hopkins, don't worry, we still have one more competition, so you can gain some time for the General Store for yourselves.
- Spilt milk, clean it up, let's go.
- The third challenge is perhaps one of the most important things you need to survive in the wild, and that is building a strong shelter.
[dramatic music] The remaining two family members will be participating in a race to see who can build the four-person tent first.
For the Hopkins, we've got Natalie and Maria.
The Goulds, we have Lincoln and Summer.
Three, two, one, go!
[all cheering] The Hopkins look like they've got theirs unrolled a little bit quicker.
The Hopkins are off to an early start, I think.
Maria is jammin' the poles together, I'm impressed.
She's looking like a pro.
- Yeah!
Colin: Goulds seem to be taking their time, still struggling to get the knots undone.
Lincoln: I was really scared, because the other team was already setting up the tent.
Colin: Hopkins definitely have the lead here, Lincoln and Summer now have the tent poles, they're putting them together.
- Way to go, Lincoln!
Colin: The Hopkins seem to have slowed down a little bit.
Maria: Okay, let's come over here.
- Ooh, oh!
Maria: I'm sorry!
Colin: Swinging those tent poles around!
Maria: Oh, sorry!
It was a challenge.
Something's wrong here.
Natalie: Mommy, I think it's upside down.
Colin: I think Lincoln may have had a breakthrough.
Carriona: Yeah, work together.
Maria: Natalie, what are you doing?
What are you doing?
Natalie: I don't know.
Kinda disappointing, 'cause we like, talk about how we're such a bonding family.
Did I do this part right?
But we didn't really bond.
Carriona: Talk about it!
Maria: Just keep your eyes, keep working.
- Don't overwork yourself.
Colin: All right.

Maria: You can't do anything when you're frustrated.
I took a minute and went back at it.
Okay.
Colin: Looks like Natalie might have the idea.
Oh, there we go!
The Hopkins are catching back up.
It looks like the Goulds may be in the lead, but it's not fully constructed right.
- Oh, Lincoln?
Lincoln: Yeah?
- It's all positioned wrong.
Colin: Looks like the Hopkins are really starting to work together.
Nathan: Find a rock to pound it in, Natalie.
Colin: They've got their rock, they've got their stakes.
Natalie's hammering 'em in.
Starting to pull even at this point, no one's givin' up.
I like the tenacity from both teams.
Lincoln's on the very last one.
- In the last stretch!
Summer: Whoo!
Colin: Looks like the Goulds think they're done, but I gotta test to make sure this thing is windproof.
So far it's pretty strong!
Let's see.
Is it oriented the right way?
Looks like a good tent to me!
The Goulds are the winners, congratulations.
[Goulds cheer] Hopkins, you did an outstanding job as well, it was close.
- I think we did okay, but we could have done better.
Summer: This feels great, because we're the youngest in our family, so we're really proud.
And now we know how to build a tent!
♪♪ Colin: Welcome to the General Store.

You guys are gonna have a minute and a half.
Every single thing that you bring back to your circle, you have to take with you on the expedition.
You don't wanna have too much, you don't wanna have too little.
I have a list of essential items.
That includes flint, water bottles, water filtration, a knife, first aid kit, and GPS.
If you miss any of these essential items, you will get a thirty minute time penalty for each one of them that you miss.
This is crucial.
But you will notice on this list, there's not tents, there's not sleeping bags, there's not food, so it's up to you how much of that you wanna bring.
All right, as we know, the Goulds are gonna have an extra 90 seconds, so I'm gonna start them first, then I'll start you guys, and you'll end at the same time.

April: Ten thousand dollars is definitely a cherry on top.
- But at the same time, the time that we spent together means more.
- How are you guys feeling?
You know, I know it's been a long several days here.
- The most meaningful part has just been able to come closer together as a family.
Even though I'm independent and competitive, at the end of the day, life is about creating bonds with others and forging relationships, and I'm really grateful that this experience was able to show me that.
Natalie: You guys see anything yet?
- We're really close.
What kept me motivated, really, was getting back to my parents.
Carriona: They're the reason we are who we are today, and the reason we were here.
Maria: Who's that over there?!
Carriona: "Who's that over there", is that what I heard?
Maria: If you hear any noise!
Kenneth and Maria: It's not me and the boys!
- Who is it?!
Children: Them Hopkins!
[shouting] Colin: All right, come on, you guys!
- Oh, you did it, you did it!
I'm so proud of you!
- Took the torch and just went on to the finish line.
Maria: They finished something that I could never do.
And for that, I'm feeling awesome.
Colin: How good is it to be reunited with your parents?
Nathan: It's wonderful to be reunited, I've been waiting ever since they left to be reunited with them.
Colin: Well, I'm proud of you, I know we are all so proud of you guys.
Kenneth, when you had to bail out, your kids soldiered and climbed over 10,000 feet.
- I mean, it's beyond great to see my little youngsters come up to be responsible and work together, get to the finish line together.
Colin: Nathan, what would you say to the bullies right now after what you've shown you can go through?
- I can do anything no matter what you say.
Just watch this and you can see I can.
- It takes that strong determination to conquer your fears.
You didn't stop.
- That's right.
- You didn't quit.
And that's all we wanna see in you guys, never quit.
- Congratulations, you did it, you did it.
I mean, it just makes me so happy to see this, because it is about competition, it is about finishing first, but ultimately the essence of this entire show, it's about camaraderie, it's about friendship, it's about bonding as a family unit, and so to see both families standing here proud, I hope you've learned something, and you can take this positivity and joy with you as you continue on your journeys as families.
[all cheering]
