Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Thomas Dambo created a fairy tale about the trolls.
It's quite an expansive story.
And within that story, there was an issue that the trolls were upset with how humans were taking care of the earth or not taking care of the earth.
And this band of of young trolls got together and said, "We have to save the humans.
We have to teach the humans how to take better care of our earth."
And that was the genesis of this particular group of trolls and this exhibition.
And each troll has its own name, its own personality, and its own message of sustainability.
(gentle upbeat music) Thomas Dambo, the artist, has done over 100 trolls across the world, but this was the very first temporary exhibition of multiple trolls that could move from garden to garden or site to site.
And really, when we first began looking at the exhibition, the trolls were still just sketches.
So it was really exciting to see the sketches come to life and be what they are today.
It was very much a collaborative effort.
We had the pleasure of having Thomas Dambo here on property, and he is in amazing creative.
His mind is just going constantly.
We walked the property together.
We really scouted it out very thoughtfully where each troll, with its individual personality, would best fit.
In fact, there was one in particular that Thomas really wanted our visitors to kind of go on a hunt for, to really discover it.
That troll we actually ended up locating on the Carell Sculpture Trail.
TROLLS: Save the Humans is a perfect exhibition for Cheekwood because it's really the intersection of art and nature.
Each individual troll is a work of art made by recycled materials.
Very creative, very original, but the story is about nature.
It's about taking care of our planet, about how to ensure that, you know, life continues, and that we're being good stewards of this earth.
These are very friendly trolls and they have friendly messages.
And you know, Cheekwood is a place for making memories.
And we really hope that when people have a memory of this exhibition, they will also take that message of sustainability with them as well.
