Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipformer president Donald Trump is expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in a Manhattan Courthouse following his indictment by a New York grand jury Trump's indictment is in connection to payments made in 2016 to cover up an alleged affair with the porn star it's the first time in U.S history that a former president has been criminally charged while we haven't heard reaction yet from Jersey Republicans the pending indictment could force GOP members to choose sides stick with Trump or condemn him for the sake of the party's future Bergen Record columnist Charlie style joins me to discuss that and more Charlie the former president has been accused of inciting an Insurrection spreading lies about the outcome of the 2020 election stealing classified documents from the White House but it was Hush Money Paid to a porn star that brought an indictment obviously it's pretty significant but I uh what do we expect in the next coming days I I think we're going to see a circus that PT Barnum could never imagine in the night in the 19th century this is going to be and this is a stage that Donald Trump uh wants this is this is where he flourishes he's the center of attention he's not only a center of attention but he's a victim a martyr at the center of attention and he's going to milk this not only for TV free media time but for his ability to raise money house Speaker Kevin McCarthy and many other Republicans are putting their support behind him so any word from New Jersey's own Chris Christie uh not yet not that I've seen um but that could change pretty soon and I would expect him to weigh in because he's been leading the charge the never Trump never again trumpers charge he's even holding himself out there as the one guy who could stand on the stage and do combat with him and succeed so we'll see I'm sure we'll hear from Chris Christie well Charlie let's talk talk about Jeff Van Drew we know he switched parties and that famous photo op in the white house with the two of them and then Trump came to New Jersey to support him when he was up for reelection any reaction from him about this again I'm monitoring that uh he may very well have as we speak but um I I if his comments the news Mac which is a right-wing Outlet earlier this week or any indication he's going to be full Moga full defensive uh president Trump discrediting of Alvin Bragg uh discrediting Michael Cohen uh the chief prostitution witness and former Trump Bag Man Who Um has been was Central to this indictment so uh I I don't expect anything less from him what does this mean then for other Republicans here in New Jersey what are the political ramifications well I think that depends on what uh part of the state you're in I think if you're in Cape May County you're in Ocean County which is a hotbed of trumpism uh this is um you're going to align yourself uh as a sympathy a Trump sympathizer trump supporter uh because that's where your base is but I think it becomes more complicated for areas say in the suburbs uh moderate Republican suburbs I uh you have some sympathy for Trump but you have a lot of uh uh discussed with him particularly among women Suburban voters and independents and and moderates uh on you know both sides of the aisle traditionally historically has been a particularly the more affluent suburbs west of Newark west of Elizabeth Somerset County have been redoubtable Republican Bastion all right well I guess we'll have to continue to watch as so much more will is expected to unfold Charlie Stiles thank you so much for joining me it's my pleasure [Music]
