Curator of Education Virginia Catherall is here with more information.
Hi, Virginia.
- Hello.
- It's such a great idea that you do these for families and kids, and I love that you tie them to the current collection.
- Yes, yeah, so families, when they come, they get to go through the collection and look at a few pieces to get inspiration, and then they create their own artwork based on that inspiration.
It's really a fun program.
- I think this is great.
And the next one's November 19th?
- Right.
- Okay, so what are they gonna be doing at that?
You brought a couple things.
- A couple things.
So we're going to be doing print making.
When you do a print, you make a matrix, and we're using actual foam to make a matrix where that you draw on and actually make something.
We're getting inspiration from our Japanese prints.
- [Mary] Aha!
- To do some landscapes, and then you ink it up and then you get to make prints, and you can make multiples of them.
So each one is a work of art and you can do it over and over and over again.
- Oh, that's great.
- That's what we'll be doing.
- And then they get to take them home.
- Yes, they do.
- Okay.
And parents have to be there with the kids?
- Right.
- Okay.
- Yes, it's a family program, so it's an intergenerational learning kind of experience, but we do get families that come that don't have kids.
We get a lot of people who come without kids and that's wonderful, we love that.
- Okay, I was just gonna ask you if grownups get to do it.
- Yes, definitely.
- Oh, that's such a great program.
And, okay, December's coming up next.
Okay, what are you gonna do for that?
- We're doing painting, where everybody gets a mini painting.
It's gonna be a very small, but they get two of them and they can do two different versions of a different scene that they want to.
- [Mary] Oh, that's great.
- Yes.
- Okay, I want to come make some prints.
- I know, it's really fun.
- Okay, well thank you so much for being here, and thanks to the museum for doing those.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about how you can get involved in UMFA's Third Saturdays, it's for families where you create your own art related to the collection.
The next one, November 19th, from one to four at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on the university campus.
