Father> Doing well in school?
Nicky> Mhm.
Mother> Make sure you eat everything on your plate.
Angela> Okay.
(dishes clanking) Father> We got a letter from Greece today.
Grandmother's coming to see us.
Nicky> Here, when's she coming?
How long is she gonna stay?
Mother> Wait a minute Nicky?
Your father can answer only one question at a time.
Father> That's right.
Grandmother is coming here next month.
Nicky> Next month?
That's a long time.
Father> Not really.
Grandmother will be here before you know it.
Mother> Grandmother isn't just coming to visit Nicky.
She's going to live here with us.
Nicky> Wow!
Father> It's going to be different with grandmother living here.
She's always lived in Greece, and she's going to have to learn about the United States.
Nicky, I'm depending on you and Angela to help her.
Nicky> Yeah, I'll help.
Angela> Me too.
Father> Nicky I want to speak to you a moment.
Your mother and I have been talking.
Grandmother will be here next week.
And if she's going to live here with us.
She'll have to have a room of her own.
Nicky> A room of her own.
We don't have an extra bedroom.
Father> Well, you and Angela will have to share a room.
Then grandmother can have this room?
Nicky> My room.
But Angela is just a baby, and she'll break all my toys.
Father> We'll just have to teach Angela to leave your things alone.
Nicky> But, father.
Father> I'm sorry.
Nicky.
That's the way it has to be.
We want grandmother to feel welcome here with us.
So mother's planning on fixing this room up for her.
Come, let's see if we can help her get things ready.
♪ ♪ Teacher> Anyone else want to share?
Nicky, come on up.
Nicky> My mother and father are picking me up after school today.
And we're going to the airport to meet my grandmother.
She's coming to live with us.
She never been to the United States before.
She's from Greece.
Teacher> Oh, wait, wait.
Tracey go get the globe, and let's see where Nicky's grandmother lived.
♪ Thank you.
Okay.
We live in the United States.
Greece is a country like the United States, but it's across the ocean.
Nicky's grandmother has been on the plane for a long time.
♪ ♪ People from different countries ♪ ♪ ♪ all this whole world round ♪ ♪ live together differently ♪ ♪ Speaking different kinds of sounds ♪ ♪ ♪ We all live in different kinds of homes ♪ ♪ play different kinds of games ♪ ♪ go to different kinds of places ♪ ♪ have different kinds of names ♪ ♪ ♪ Some things are the same ♪ ♪ We all love and laugh and cry ♪ ♪ Such things never change ♪ ♪ They never come untied ♪ ♪ Grandmother> The house is beautiful.
So big.
♪ At home we have such small house.
Father> This is your house now Mother.
Mother> We've even fixed a room, especially for you.
Nicky> It was my old room.
Come on, I'll show you.
♪ Don't you like the bedroom?
It was my old room, we fixed it for you.
Grandmother> A very nice room.
You say, it was your room.
Where do you sleep now?
Nicky> Angela and I sleep in the same room.
Grandmother> I'm sorry you had to give up your room.
Nicky> That's okay, I don't mind.
I did at first, but I don't now.
I'm so glad you're here Grandmother.
Grandmother> Oh, Nicky, I'm so glad too.
Sometimes I cannot think of the right word to use.
My English is not very good.
Nicky> Anytime you can't think of the right word, ask me.
I'll help you with your English and you can teach me Greek.
Grandmother> Okay, ♪ ♪ (speaking Greek) Nicky> A gift, for me.
Grandmother> Yes.
And one for your father and your mother, and your sister, Angela.
Nicky> Thank you.
What was that word again?
"Doro," for "gift."
♪ Nicky> Doro, from Grandmother.
♪ Father> Oh, mother, you shouldn't have brought us gifts all the way from Greece.
(paper tearing) Mother> The rings are beautiful Grandmother.
Thank you.
Father> Oh, mother, The Parthenon.
I remember visiting it when I was just Nicky's age.
Children, The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple.
It was built thousands of years ago.
It's in ruins today, but it's one of the world's most beautiful buildings.
Grandmother> This is for you Angela.
Angela> Thank you Grandmother.
(paper rustling) Puppets.
Thank you Grandmother.
Father> That's Kyphosis.
Kyphosis, is a hunchbacked dwarf.
He tells stories so he can get food for his family.
We'll have to make a stage for Kyphosis.
(paper rustling) Nicky> It's a dress.
Grandmother> It's a fustanella, It is worn by the honor guard or soldiers at the Royal Palace in Athens.
The fustanella was first worn by Greek mountain fighters, because it was easy to climb mountains in them.
They were very brave soldiers.
Grandmother> Try it on Nicky.
Nicky> I'll try it on later.
Grandmother> What's wrong?
Father> Nothing Mother.
He's just not used to many of our Greek customs.
Mother> You'll have to teach the children and me more about Greece and your customs.
We really have forgotten them.
Nicky> Good morning Grandmother.
Grandmother> Kalimera Nicky.
That is Greek for "good morning."
Where does your mother keep the olive oil?
I'm going to fix eggs for breakfast.
Nicky> We don't use olive oil.
We use butter.
Grandmother> Your mother doesn't cook with olive oil.
Nicky> I don't think so.
We eat olives.
On our farm in Greece, we raised olives.
All over the side of the mountains, there were olive trees.
We used them to make olive oil.
I only cook with olive oil.
Nicky> You don't use butter or vegetable oil?
Grandmother> No.
Only olive oil.
I'm going to fix a Greek meal tonight.
Nicky, will you go to the store with me?
♪ ♪ But some things are the same ♪ ♪ We all love and laugh and cry ♪ ♪ Such things never change ♪ ♪ They never come untied ♪ Grandmother> I need lamb, eggplant, honey- Nicky> Lamb, what are you going to fix?
Grandmother> I'll make souvlaki.
That is lamb cooked on a skewer.
And maybe make moussaka too.
That is eggplant stuffed with ground lamb.
Nicky> Can you make baklava?
We had that at church supper.
It's good.
Grandmother> Of course, I can make baklava.
We'll have that tonight too.
Ah, there is the olive oil.
(cans clanking) ♪ (shopping cart rolling) Worker> What can I get for you?
Grandmother> I need some lamb, maybe enough for five people.
Do you have goat cheese?
Worker> Yes, ma'am.
Nicky> Goat cheese?
What's the difference between goat cheese and regular cheese.
Grandmother> Goat cheese is made from goat's milk.
Regular cheese is made from cow's milk.
In Greece, we only have goat cheese.
Worker> Is anything else you like to have?
Grandmother> Not today, Thank you.
Worker> Thank You.
(family chatting) Nicky> Grandmother this is great.
Father> Of course it is, your grandmother is a good cook.
Nicky> Mama, why don't you ever fix food like this?
Mother> I don't know how to fix them, but now that Grandmother's here, she'll be able to teach me.
♪ Nicky> May I please be excused father?
Father> Of course, my son.
♪ ♪ People from different countries ♪ ♪ all this whole world wide ♪ ♪ dance to different musics ♪ ♪ sing different lullabies ♪ ♪ We all eat different kinds of food ♪ ♪ spend different kinds of days ♪ ♪ Wear different kinds of clothes ♪ ♪ in different kinds of ways ♪ ♪ ♪ And the way we live right here ♪ ♪ Which sure seems strange to some ♪ ♪ and the way some others live ♪ ♪ Can sure seem strange to us ♪ ♪ Nicky> Look, Grandmother.
It fits.
Grandmother> Oh, Nicky, you look like a real Evzonoi.
a brave Greek soldier.
Nicky> Would you like to come to my school tomorrow and tell the kids about Greece and all about my costume?
Grandmother> Nicky, I would love to come.
♪ Nicky> In Greece, their soldiers are called Evzonoi.
They wear uniforms like this.
It was first worn by Greek mountain fighters because they could climb mountains in them.
You remember that I told you my grandmother was coming from Greece to live with us.
I learned many things about Greece from my grandmother.
And she's here to tell you about Greece too.
Here's my grandmother.
♪ And the way we live right here ♪ ♪ Which sure seems strange to some ♪ ♪ and the way some others live ♪ ♪ can sure seem strange to us ♪ ♪ But some things are the same ♪ ♪ We all... ♪
