I like living here.
It's a nice town.
This is the main street.
It's not only the main street.
It's just about the only street in town.
St. Matthews isn't very large.
In fact, it's really a small town compared to some others.
About 2500 people live here, and that's not many people.
Most people live outside of town on farms.
Our stores aren't large.
They don't have to be.
We can buy almost anything we need here in Saint Matthews.
If we can't, then we can get it in the larger town nearby.
Hey, Mrs. Andrews.
Mrs. Andrews> Hello, Joe.
How are you?
Joe> Fine.
Mrs. Andrews> Good.
I haven't seen you in town for a while.
Joe> I've been down at the hardware store was my dad.
Mrs. Andrews> That's real good.
What can I get for you today?
Joe> I'd like some dental floss and some vanilla ice cream.
Mrs. Andrews> All righty.
(machine whirs) Mrs. Andrews> Now, the next time you in town, you come by to see us.
Hear?
Joe> Yes, ma'am Mrs. Andrews> Bye bye.
♪ Country life is what I like.
♪ ♪ It's what is right for me.
♪ ♪ I've got everything I want and everything I need.
♪ ♪ Small town livin is the way life oughta be.
♪ ♪ So I'll just keep my heart right here, ♪ ♪ where a friend ♪ ♪ is every one I see.
♪ ♪ Joe> That's my dad.
He's buying a part for our tractor.
Joe> I'm back, Dad.
Dad> Where have you been, Joe?
I was afraid you were lost.
Joe> Get lost in Saint Matthews?
I was just going...
I just went down to the drugstore to get something for Mom.
♪ Country life is what I like.
♪ ♪ It's what is right for me.
♪ ♪ I've got everything I want, and everything I need.
♪ ♪ Small town livin is the way life ought to be.
♪ ♪ So I'll just keep my heart right here, ♪ ♪ where a friend ♪ ♪ ♪ is every one I see.
♪ ♪ Joe> We don't live in town.
My family lives on a dairy farm.
♪ Farming land looks different from land in the city.
See how flat the land is?
There are few trees here.
The fields have to be cleared so crops can be grown.
♪ Trees would just get in the way.
♪ That's where the Wilsons live.
I go to school with Chuck.
They're our nearest neighbors.
In the country, people don't live close together like they do in the city.
We need to have a lot of space around our houses.
♪ This is where we live.
Joe> Mom, we're home.
Mom> Oh!
Well, I'm glad you didn't forget to go by the drugstore.
Joe> I'm going down to the dairy.
Mom> Just a minute.
You change your clothes first.
If you go in to help your father work, you put on your work clothes, because clothes cost money.
Joe> Mom always talks about money when she's working on those books.
In them, she keeps a record of how much money the farm makes and how much money it costs to run the farm.
The difference is how much money our family makes.
Joe> See you later.
Mom> Don't slam the door.
(door slams) Joe> Everyone has to help run the farm.
There's too much work for us to do it all ourselves.
We have some people who work for us.
Dad does much of the work himself.
But I help with some things.
So does my older brother Sammy.
Joe> Sammy's in the barn.
He has a calf of his own.
♪ When I'm old enough, I'll have a calf too.
Sammy takes care of his calf all by himself.
♪ We're on a dairy farm.
That means we have lots of calves.
♪ They have to be fed and taken care of no matter what else you want to do.
Calves have to be milked twice every day.
We don't milk by hand because it would take too long.
We use milking machines.
We sell our milk.
A truck comes and takes it to the plant where it's processed.
There it's put in containers and sent to stores to be sold.
♪ See all those tall things?
Those are silos.
Feed for our cows is stored there.
Our cows get fed five times a day.
We even feed the cows while they're being milked.
We also raise feed for the cows on our farm.
Cows eat corn, wheat, soybean meal and grasses.
If we didn't raise these crops ourselves, then we'd have to buy all our food.
♪ Dad fixes tractors.
It's the most important piece of equipment.
On a farm, people have to depend on machines to help them do their work.
A tractor can be used to plow a field and pull other kinds of equipment and do all kinds of things.
♪ (engine revs up) I bet Dad thinks his truck is important too.
Most of the time, He uses it instead of a car to work around the farm.
♪ Take a walk around the fields.
♪ ♪ Take a walk around the farm.
♪ ♪ Did you ever see so many busy hands?
♪ ♪ There's work to be done.
♪ ♪ We all work as one and everybody understands ♪ ♪ that I need you and you need me.
♪ ♪ And the farm needs us all ♪ ♪ That's the way it's meant to be.
♪ ♪ ♪ Take a look at the crop.
♪ ♪ Or look at the barn ♪ ♪ and see how we all work together.
♪ ♪ ♪ There's work to be done.
♪ ♪ We still have time for fun.
♪ ♪ And working together is better.
♪ ♪ ♪ Cause I need you and you need me.
♪ ♪ ♪ And the farm needs us all.
♪ ♪ That's the way it's meant to be.
♪ Joe> Our house is just like any other house.
The kitchen is always a busy place.
Mom's been canning today.
We raised some of our food right here on the farm.
But we buy other things we need in the grocery store.
A farmer has to know many different things.
The way people farm has changed.
Dad has to keep up with all these changes.
If he keeps up with these new ways of farming, he might grow more and better crops.
Dad> We still have corn to harvest.
The weatherman says rain.
Mom> Think you can finish before the rain?
Dad> I don't know I'll sure try.
♪ Joe> Weather is important to a farmer.
We have to have rain to water the crops.
But if it rains too much, then the crops can get too wet.
If it rains, and some crops are being harvested, they're ruined.
If it gets too hot or cold, some plants can die.
A farmer has to depend on the weather being good, or else he can lose his whole year's work.
Dad's harvesting corn today.
When a crop's ripe, it has to be gathered or picked.
There's too much corn to be harvested by hand, So dad uses a combine to harvest it.
A combine is a big machine that's used to cut grain.
It not only picks the corn, but it cleans it and puts it in a grain tank.
(machine whirs) When the tank is full.
The corn is poured from the grain tank into a wagon, then stored for later use.
Some farmers like Dad specialize in one type of farming.
My dad raises cows other farmers grow up just one kind of crop.
My uncle grows only soybeans, but some farmers grow all kinds of different crops on their farms.
We have to work hard on the farm, but there's not always work to do.
We do have some time to play.
There are all kinds of fun things to do on a farm.
There are places to explore.
And lots of space to play in.
The Millers are here!
The Millers are friends of ours.
They live down the road.
They don't have a farm like we do.
Mr. Miller runs a store in town and Mrs. Miller, is a librarian.
A lot of people live in the country who aren't farmers.
They're just like to have a lot of space around them.
Sometimes in large cities, people don't even have a yard around their houses.
I wonder where they have their picnics.
My family does many things together.
Mom and Dad don't work all the time.
We take vacations just like other families, but we may go in the winter rather than in the summer.
Summer is a busy time on the farm and so is the Spring and Fall.
But in the Winter, there's not as much to do.
(indistinct conversations) Dad> Where's the ice cream?
Mom> You get it.
Dad> Oh, I guess that means it's on me Well, let's see what it looks like here.
See if it's ready.
It ought to be.
Oh, yeah.
That's great.
That's good.
Okay.
Here we go.
Chomp down on some of that.
How about you kids?
Here you go.
This looks good, Alex.
(indistinct conversations) ♪ Joe> You know, I like living on the farm.
Sometimes it's hard work, but it's usually a lot of fun.
I know it's different from living in a large city, but I like it here.
This is my home.
