Mom already has breakfast ready.
You better hurry.
Beth> I'm awake I'll be there in a minute.
(water pouring) Cold, I bet the kitchen's warm.
They're fixing breakfast in there, so the fire is burning.
I wish it wasn't so much trouble to bring in wood, or we could have a fire in every room.
I'll be so glad when the Shoemaker finishes my new shoes.
Kacea's old shoes are too big for me.
It sure will be nice to have a pair of shoes that fit.
Mom> Beth!
Your breakfast is getting cold.
Beth> I'll be there in a minute.
♪ Mom> That Beth is getting slower everyday.
Papa> Aw, she's still young.
Don't rush it, she's got a whole life in front of her... Mom> Papa don't baby Beth.
She has her chores to do, just like the rest of us.
♪ (door squeaking and shutting) Beth> Morning Ma.
Morning Dad.
Morning Shawn.
Shawn> Morning Beth.
Beth> Morning Kacea.
Dad> Morning Beth.
♪ Beth> My brother Shawn, he's fourteen.
When he's not in school, he helps daddy around the farm.
My daddy has lived on this farm all his life.
He farms the land and raises food for our family.
Mom> You want some more coffee.
Dad> Please.
Beth> Mama stays busy here in the house.
She cooks food for us and makes our clothes.
In fact she makes almost everything we need around the house.
♪ (family talking) Kacea is my sister.
She's twelve, she helps around the house.
I help too, but I'm only six.
I can't do the same kind of things as Kacea and Shawn.
♪ (family talking) That's Papa.
He's my grandfather.
He lives with us.
This used to be his farm, but now he works in town.
He's the cabinetmaker.
(laughter) Papa> What you gonna do today, Shawn.
Beth> Today is Tuesday, November 5th.
The year is 1850.
♪ Dad> Come on Shawn, we got work to do.
Papa> I guess I better get into town too, and finish up that... Mom> Kacea, go get some water to wash the dishes.
It's a lot of work to do today.
Kacea> Yes mam.
♪ Mom> Beth, you've got your chores to do too.
Beth> Oh, no.
♪ ♪ ♪ Go now Kacea get some water from the well ♪ ♪ 'cause we got to wash dishes for the sun gets higher ♪ ♪ there's little Beth sweeping off the porch ♪ ♪ with the broom made of straw and flexing wire ♪ ♪ ♪ Shawn's chopping wood and then he feeds the animals ♪ ♪ working on the farm is hard to do ♪ ♪ but the wood is needed for the family fire ♪ ♪ and the animals are fed because we need them too ♪ ♪ ♪ Beth goes down to the big cotton field ♪ ♪ to pick some cotton for an hour or two ♪ ♪ Mama's been sewing and washing all the clothes ♪ ♪ taking food from the pantry gonna make some stew ♪ ♪ ♪ Kacea is picking up sticks from the yard ♪ ♪ Mama will use it for the cooking and the fire ♪ ♪ Shawn is a working with the animals now ♪ ♪ It's been a long day and Shawn is getting tired ♪ ♪ ♪ Beth> Mom is making candles We use a lot of candles, because they're the only light we have in the house at night.
Except for the light from the fire.
♪ Candles are made by dipping wicks of string in hot wax and letting them dry.
Mama dips the candles into the wax over and over again.
Each time they are dipped in the wax they get bigger.
When they're big enough, our candles are ready.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Daddy's making syrup with the cane we grew ♪ ♪ It slowly cooks in the boiling heat ♪ ♪ He stokes the fire and stirs at the well ♪ ♪ cooks it thick until it's ready to eat ♪ ♪ ♪ Now it's time for Beth and Shawn ♪ ♪ to feed the animals in the farmyard ♪ ♪ Soon it will be time to go inside ♪ ♪ get to ready for dinner cause we've all worked hard ♪ Mom> Beth, Beth!
♪ Here, take this to your grandfather Kacea at the store.
♪ Beth> Our farm's in Westville, Georgia.
Westville is just a small town.
♪ We only have one church in town.
The church bell is rung on Sundays, to tell us when it's time to come to church.
♪ ♪ That's Mr. Lawson.
He has a farm near ours.
I wish we had a nice buggy like Mr. Lawson.
♪ ♪ My friend Jessica lives here.
Her father's a merchant.
He makes more money than we do.
That's why his house doesn't look like ours.
Jessica doesn't have to do as much work as I do.
I like to visit with Jessica, but I don't have time to stop today.
♪ There's the doctor's office.
Mama makes medicine for us from her herb garden.
But it's nice to have a doctor to go to, if we're really sick.
♪ There are many different shops across from the town square.
Papa's cabinet shop is one of them Papa is the best cabinetmaker around.
He can make anything out of wood.
Papa> Well, well, there comes my dinner girl.
You haven't been by the shoemaker shop yet have you.
Beth> No why?
Papa> If you would have gone there first, my dinner would have been cold.
You seem to stay a long time when you go by to see your new shoes.
Beth> Oh, Papa.
Papa> Let's see what your mother sent me.
Beth> The other half is for Paul.
Papa> Put that wood down, come on in and let's eat something.
Beth> Paul's working with Papa.
He's learning to be a cabinetmaker.
He's called an apprentice because he's still learning Papa's trade.
He lives here in the shop, and one day he'll be a cabinetmaker too.
This is how people learn to be shoemakers, potters, or cabinetmakers.
I'm going to find Kacea.
Papa> Okay, we'll see you later Beth.
Paul> Bye Beth.
♪ Beth> We don't have to buy much at the store.
Most families make everything they need themselves.
We just buy the things we can't make.
♪ Most towns like Westville have a school.
Kacea and Shawn have gone to school before, and I'm going to start soon.
We only go to school during the summer and the winter.
That's when we aren't needed at home to help with the planting or harvesting.
♪ I've been inside the school before.
All the children that go to school here, are in this one room.
The teacher sits at the front.
Whenever the teachers starts the lesson, calls the students he wants to teach, up to the recitation bench to sit.
And when the lessons finished they go back to their seats, and another group of students come up for their lesson.
Oh, I Can't wait to start the school next week.
Kacea> Why you so excited about starting the school?
Beth> Because I'll have my new shoes by then.
Hello Mr...
I just wanted to watch you work on my new shoes.
