(upbeat music) - The Epilepsy Foundation of Utah offers programs and events for families impacted by epilepsy, including the upcoming event, Under the Epilep-SEA, at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium.
S. Keturah Miller and Laura Beeler are here to tell us more.
Laura, you've been with the Foundation for how long?
- I've been with the Foundation for about three years now.
- [Laura Durham] Wow.
Can you tell us a little bit about it?
- Yeah, so the foundation started in 2011, and it offers a lot of support, opportunities, and groups for the community.
And it started by Margot, I don't know if you're familiar with Margot, but she's amazing, and yeah.
- How many people are affected by epilepsy in Utah?
- About 30,000 people are affected with epilepsy, and so 1 in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy, and 1 in 10 will have a seizure in their lifetime.
- [Laura Durham] Oh my goodness.
- So it's a lot more common than people like to think.
- Yeah, so it's great that you have this foundation to help people.
And Keturah, maybe you can tell us a little bit about the benefits of having this foundation and what it does for families.
- Yes, we have two children, my husband and I, that have lived with epilepsy, and our children, the community, the educators, all of these people around us have also lived with epilepsy.
So as we've been able to come and join some of the groups with the Epilepsy Foundation, you see how it really is living with epilepsy with so many people and the struggles, but also the challenges and victories with epilepsy are huge.
So we're able to have more research, more support groups, and outreach.
Like we have a camp every summer for children and for their siblings to come so they have care, and they can enjoy a summer camp.
These kinds of things are so important, but we also have the Epilep-SEA Gala coming this year.
- [Laura Durham] Can you tell us a little bit about that really quickly?
- Yes, it is our highlight of the year.
It allows so that we have all these programs and research and progress.
It's gonna be at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in January, and there will be children that come, and they can also enjoy the program with their caregivers and their parents.
And we would love for everyone to come.
- That's great.
Well, thank you so much for sharing with us what you do.
I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who would love to come to this event.
Thank you.
- Yes, it's our biggest event of the year, so excited.
- If you'd like to learn more about the Under the Epilep-SEA event, it's at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium on January 31st at 6:00 p.m., hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Utah.
