Cascade PBS compiled nearly 250 cases in Washington, where Uber is a party.
Multimedia Journalist Jaelynn Grisso shares what we found.
- In the nearly 250 lawsuits in Washington in the last ten years, Uber is typically the defendant.
The majority of the lawsuits are near urban centers, but nearly half of the state's counties have seen at least one suit brought against Uber in the last decade.
The company currently faces at least 20 active lawsuits throughout the state.
For example, two personal injury cases in King County against Uber focused on people being seriously hurt in car accidents.
In one case, an Uber hit a woman while she was crossing the street.
In the other, the driver made an illegal U-turn and crashed into another car, causing serious damages.
Washington riders have filed several other cases against Uber for alleged sexual assault or misconduct from drivers.
In one of those cases, a man allegedly exposed himself to the rider.
The suit alleges the man had a history of this behavior, but Uber continued to allow him to drive.
Uber responded to our questions by saying that 99.9% of rides do not have a safety incident reported and said, quote, safety is fundamental to the Uber experience and we are deeply committed to helping protect both riders and drivers.
We know our work is never finished and we will continue listening, learning and investing in ways to help make the platform safer for everyone.
- Next time, we'll focus on safe for riders while on a trip.
