Yeah, this is a pretty uncommon space.
If you look down the street, we have a railroad yard.
Good morning.
I am Bruce Holloway, and we're here this morning at ninth and Mulberry, where we have a community garden.
We have a license agreement, a long term with the city to use it for.
For garden purposes only.
There's been a lot that's gone into this by a lot of people since 2022.
Hi, I'm Janet Porter, and this is Kansas City Academy.
Welcome to our garden.
I'm the science teacher for the living sciences.
And we're always out here learning about soil and learning about agriculture zones.
What's more important than learning how to eat healthy and have the best environment possible that we can create on earth?
Hi, I'm Beth.
Welcome to the Turner Community Garden.
We started at the top of the hill and now we have over two acres of gardening in this area.
This is our giving Grove orchard.
And the Giving Grove has helped us out so much.
We go all the way to the intersection.
Here is what Giving Grove helped us in planting.
And this is a fruit orchard.
There's pears, apples, pawpaws, persimmons, peaches.
Just again, to to emphasize how much help Giving Grove was.
They came out here with their volunteers and equipment and of course the trees.
And in about 2.5 hours, with the help of other volunteers, we had this whole area that you see in front of you planting.
Here's another thing the Giving Grove gave us.
This is our fig bad tiny figs growing.
So we have a very small space that has very limited amounts of dirt.
And so Giving Grove was very creative and helping us come up with a garden or an orchard.
We have a fairly light harvesting, and for such a young orchard, the next trees are pear trees.
These are Asian pears.
You can see the little jujubes growing.
They are a Chinese date that will be brown.
They provided 18 fruit trees education on how to take care of them.
They've helped us with some of the items that we need to maintain this orchard.
They come out and do inspections.
We wouldn't have had this orchard without them.
These are smaller apple trees, Liberty apples.
And still to this day, if we have issues, we'll reach out to them.
Yeah, this is a pretty uncommon space.
This property is actually owned by the city.
It's a right of way, for this viaduct.
So this is a community garden.
And you can see if you look down the street, we have a railroad yard, and we have a lot of truck traffic, and there's a lot of industry, but, hey, we got this beautiful spot right here.
You guys come down as a group, and you make sure all the tools are picked up before you come down.
Right.
It's really good to, like, learn about new plants and, see how much of your your plants have grown.
It's like it's nice to see.
It's good for the kids.
They give them a sense of accomplishment.
It gives them a sense of belonging.
They really enjoy it.
I really enjoy working at the garden.
I feel like it's a great opportunity to learn how to grow my own plants.
Thank you for coming out to our community garden.
I hope you enjoy it and come back again.
