Three unions have confirmed a tentative deal with Rutgers University. After a historic strike and intense negotiations, the unions said they have reached tentative agreements with Rutgers administrators. The unions -- representing full-time faculty, adjuncts, and medical faculty and researchers -- said they will present the agreements to their board members for votes within 24 to 48 hours.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipit's been weeks of negotiations and walkouts but it appears two unions representing Rutgers University staff have reached a tentative deal a deal that if ratified would provide substantial salary increases for full-time staff graduate and teaching assistants last night the medical staff including Physicians and fellows from Rutgers New Jersey medical school at University Hospital in Newark protested saying until now they've been left out of the talks senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan spoke with some of them to hear their complaints and their plans for what comes next after an historic strike and some intense negotiations Rutgers unions confirmed they've reached a tentative deal with the university the bargaining committee chairman for Rutgers adjuncts faculty Union said they'll present it to board members for a vote Brian sack said the adjuncts contract in our opinion contains historic gains for Rutgers adjuncts we've made a tremendous amount of Headway in salary provisions and job security and and we expect our board and members will likely see it that way as well the full-time faculty Union President also confirmed her Union has a resolution to present to its board members sometime within the next 24 hours the announcement comes after months of negotiations and an unprecedented walkout 's faculty launched a history-making strike against the university earlier this month but paused the job action after just five days when Governor Murphy brought negotiators to the table in Trenton and offered State funding to help make a deal but while progress has been made by full-time and adjunct faculty other unions also continue to negotiate what represented 1100 interns in Resident physicians at RWJ University Hospital in New Brunswick and University Hospital in Newark where they often pull 80-hour shifts they're paid on average 14 bucks and 84 cents an hour We're overworked and underpaid and we are the doctors working at the only public Hospital in New Jersey serving a community here in Newark that's already facing Steve barriers to care I think it's frustrating and I think it it's not fair given that other Healthcare employees are making much more resident Dr Ali Cooper says she and her Rucker's colleagues earn less than sixty two thousand dollars a year for jobs that pay 70 grand at Hackensack Meridian and 75 000 at Bergen Newbridge medical centers medical residents often face crushing school loans and struggle to make ends meet what we're asking for is just commensurate with the market we're asking for um parity with our comparable institutions we're not asking for a crazy increase that's unheard of these Physicians also want help with Health Care Child Care and transportation costs their unions worked without a contract for more than 300 days and their rally Drew support from politicians and other organized labor leaders who reminded Rutgers administrators how doctors braved the pandemic three years ago we were Heroes and now we're zeros I'm sick of it and I'm sick of Rutgers I'm sick of stall tactics I'm sick of lack of movement we need a contract and we need it now Rutgers needs to put their money where their mouth is and make sure that they bring you up to where it is that you need to be talks will continue Rutgers Union contracts remain in negotiation I'm Brenda Flanagan NJ Spotlight news thank you [Music]
