(upbeat instrumental music) - University of Utah College of Fine Arts is presenting its first ever Woodwinds Day at the School of Music.
It features a mix of clinics, performances, and masterclasses.
Assistant Professor of Clarinet, Laura Grantier, is here to tell us more.
Hi Laura.
- Hello, good morning.
- Thank you for being here.
- Thank you.
- So why a Woodwind Day?
- Well, my former commanding officer used to say, "Every day is clarinet day."
So when I took the job here at the University of Utah, I thought, okay, "We'll have a Woodwind Day."
And this is a great education outreach event that encompasses instruments of the woodwind family.
We have flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and we can't forget the saxophone.
So we have those wonderful woodwind instruments and so I hope it will generate a lot of enthusiasm for high school students, college students, music enthusiasts who would like to come and just have community together.
We have a festival woodwind ensemble where everyone can play together.
We have vendors where you can try instruments and equipment.
We will have a featured student and faculty recital.
So you can hear our University of Utah music students and our faculty, and then we will have clinics.
And a clinic is where you might have one of our professors talking about preparing for an audition or performance anxiety, or what is it like to be a college student at the University of Utah.
So it encompasses many things over the course of one day.
- I tell you, it's a broad range.
You do it all.
- We do.
We do it all.
- Yeah.
- And I know you've done these at other colleges you were at and with the Navy Band in DC.
- That's correct.
So my very first Clarinet Day, it was a Clarinet Day, was in 2012, and I had 15 participants the very first year.
But it grew by word of mouth and the Navy Band was so supportive, including my commanding officer.
And so it just kind of grew year to year to where, In 2019, we had over 100 participants.
- Wow.
Well, good luck with this one.
It's great you're doing it.
Thanks.
- Thank you.
