Wichita was built in a class all of its own.
It was built on the Brooklyn class light cruiser hull and modified with heavy cruiser guns to give it a heavy cruiser classification.
Wichita saw heavy action in bot Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
After Japan surrendered, Wichita served as part of the occupation force under Operation Magic Carpet.
Wichita returned to the US in 1947 and was sold for scrap in 1959.
Wichita was awarded 13 battle stars for her service in World War II.
