(upbeat music) - May is asthma awareness month and here was more details about the resources available to those living with asthma, Ms. Savannah Smith from the Utah Department of Health Asthma Program, Welcome Savannah.
- Hello Mary, Thank you for having me today.
- A pleasure, so tell me like about the asthma program who you are and what you do?
- Yeah, so the Utah Asthma Program is located at the Utah Department of Health in the Bureau of Health Promotion.
Our main mission is to improve the lives of those with asthma.
So we work and coordinate programs for families, schools, healthcare professionals and those living with asthma.
- Okay, and what is Utah's asthma burden?
How many people would you estimate are affected?
- Currently, around 258,000 are living with asthma in the state of Utah.
- [Mary] Wow.
So that is about one in 11 adults and one in 20 children, equal to one in four children in the classroom, as well.
- Wow, that's a lot of people suffering and I know you have a home visiting program for Salt Lake and Utah County.
What does that entail?
- So our, home visiting program is free for those living in the Salt Lake County and Utah County areas.
We serve families with uncontrolled asthma through three home visits and two phone calls.
We discuss asthma triggers, asthma basics, proper medication use, set goals, and so much more.
It's like a personal health coach and it's free - A great service without many people suffering and I imagine a lot of things here make it worse too.
So thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you, and for more information please visit our website www.health.utah.gov/asthma for more information.
- Okay, Thank you.
And as Savannah said if you want to learn more about the Department of Health Asthma Program and all the resources available it's www.health.utah.gov/asthma.
