(lively music) - Utah Diaper Bank raises awareness of diaper needs in Utah, creates diaper distribution networks and helps family in need throughout the state.
Executive director and founder Vic Velivis is here with more details about the services provided.
Hi, there Vic.
- Hi, nice to be here.
- Wow, it's good to have you back.
And you have made significant progress since we last talked.
- [Vic] We have quite a bit, yes.
- You are up to 1.3 million diapers distributed.
- That went all across the state of Utah.
And so it really is a lot of growth.
That first year we did 11,000 diapers and then this last year we did that 1.3 million.
It's just amazing.
- Wow, and I think it's great because there's not a government agency that funds diapers or helps people get access.
You're all volunteer.
- Well, most people don't realize, I didn't either until I got into it, that none of the agencies that you'd think would give diapers, the SNAP, WIC, those programs, they don't give diapers or funds for diapers.
And so that's how we got started.
That's actually why 250 diaper banks exist all across the US.
- Wow, wow.
- That's why we do it.
- Okay, and just talk about what this does for families.
- Oh, it just makes a huge difference.
I mean, it's obvious that it helps the child and the infant.
Less diaper rash, that means less times they have to go to the doctors or have medications.
But the stress on the families, too.
I mean, the families are under a great deal of stress.
Imagine looking down at your baby when you're changing it, and trying to, and instead of putting that diaper in the garbage, you put it aside 'cause you might have to use it again.
That's gotta be a tough choice for a parent and just something horrible that they have to do.
They miss work 'cause they don't have diapers.
I mean, that's part of how we got started is that a daycare center didn't have diapers and so they couldn't provide their services 'cause their clients didn't have the diapers, either.
And so here they had free daycare to go to work, but they couldn't take advantage of it.
So, it impacts a lot of areas.
- No kidding.
Well, thank you so much for what you're doing.
It's so important and for your success, thanks.
- Well, it's the community that's all done it over the years.
I mean, they're the ones that have made the donations and helped us out.
- Great.
And if you would like to know more about that service and how you could make a difference for the Utah Diaper Bank, just go to Utahdiaperbank.org, Utahdiaperbank.org.
