(upbeat music) - Utah Insight's 2026 Legislative Session coverage highlights the key issues and fast-moving bills defining this year's session.
Producer and Host, Lauren Steinbrecher, is here to tell us more.
Lauren, there is so much going on at the Capitol.
- Oh my gosh, yes.
- What has captured your attention thus far?
- Yeah, so I mean we've seen a lot of the priorities, like housing, you know, education.
A huge thing this year has been the courts, and with the whole redistricting situation, we're seeing a lot of laws aimed toward that.
But honestly, sometimes it's just keeping track of what all the different bills are 'cause there are hundreds, and dozens, you know, that are going through each day.
- Yeah.
Let's get into that.
There are so many bills going in through each day and there's only two of you guys to sort through them all.
How do you guys keep up with what's happening?
- Yeah, so it's me and our Executive Producer, Kelton Wells.
And so what I do is honestly, I'm like, every day I'm on looking at all the hearings, I'm looking through all the bills.
You know, some bills, they kind of go under the radar because they have a really generic name to them.
So you even have to click into the bill and be like, "What is this bill about?
What does this cover?"
And there are some really interesting ones.
You know, there's one that would potentially make human composting legal in Utah as like another alternative to cremation or burial.
They're just, it just really runs the gamut.
- And there's so much going on and it moves so quickly.
What I love about what you guys have done with Utah Insight is you're making it more accessible in faster ways for people to watch it.
Can you talk about that?
- Yeah.
So you know, Kelton and I, we're up on the hill, where if we're not, we're likely watching hearings and keeping track of all the hearings, and we're putting together reels, you know, we're covering some of the stuff that you're seeing other places, but we're also looking for some of those bills that aren't getting coverage, and you know, just trying to explain to people what's going on so they don't have to be the ones keeping track of everything.
- Yeah.
So PBS Utah's Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and then you also write in more detail about the stories on PBSutah.org, right?
- Yeah.
So Utah Insight, we have kind of a blog article page.
So we, you know, we write articles so people can read the information there and also watch the video.
- And those articles have been picked up by other news outlets.
I'm just gonna brag on you guys.
It is such incredible coverage.
You have got to check it out.
We're gonna put that information on your screen so you can learn more.
