Where to Watch Contact
Contact is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.
(bright upbeat music) (bright upbeat music fades) - Step inside the Utah STEM Action Center's Innovation Hub, and you'll find 3D printers, laser cutters, and workshops.
This makerspace is designed to inspire creativity and innovation.
Are you ready to check it out?
Becca Robison is here to share how you can do just that.
And that's Becca Robison.
Thank you so much for being here.
- Thanks for having me!
- Becca, tell me about this space and who it's for.
- So we have a 2,000 square foot makerspace in South Salt Lake, off of 39th and West Temple, and it's for everybody.
The STEM Action Center is a state agency, we're part of the state government, and so we welcome anyone and everyone into our space to learn how to make cool things.
- And what are some of the cool things that people can make in this space?
- Oh, we have so much equipment.
We have laser printers.
We have 3D printers.
We have sublimation.
We have a wood shop.
Really, we try to be the place that if you have an idea, you can come to us and we can help you make it happen.
- [Liz] And you guys also offer some cool summer camps for kids where they can create things as well?
- We do.
We're right in the heart of summer camp, which is my absolute favorite time of the year.
It is so amazing to see what these kids can come up with.
We have a few camps that we still have spots for.
We have a camp called the Character Craft, which takes place the week of June 29th.
And that is all about the STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math, that goes into character creation and prop making.
We also have a camp called Fabric Forge the week of July 13th, that is all about the science that goes into textiles.
So the outfit you're wearing, the clothes that I'm wearing, how we get to that point.
And then, we have one more camp the week of July 20th, it's all about the science and math that goes into board game making.
- So school may be out, but kids are still learning things and having a good time doing it.
- Yeah, learning and having fun, most importantly.
- I love that.
And if adults wanna check it out, when can they do that?
- Yeah, adults are welcome too.
Of course, not during our summer camps, but we have evening classes.
We have beginner classes that rotate through sewing, 3D printing, laser cutting, and sublimation.
Those are Wednesday nights, and they're only $8.
And then, we have a free time on Friday.
You sign up for a 1.5 hour time slot, and you can come into our makerspace on Fridays between the hours of five and eight and make whatever you dream up.
- That's incredible.
Well, Becca Robison, thank you so much for being here and joining us and sharing this information.
