My name is Kristin Lee, and today we take you on a journey through the English countryside, accompanied by music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Frank Bridge.
♪ Cries but a wayside ♪ - [Kristin] "Songs of Travel" is Vaughan Williams's first major song cycle, a stunning musical setting of Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry.
♪ Cold beats the light of ♪ - Throughout the nine songs, we hear the wandering meditations of the traveler, weathered and resolute, but ultimately overcome by despair.
Yet in the reflective final coda- ♪ I have endured ♪ - Vaughan Williams allows for a glimmer of hope through the clouded sky.
Pianist Gilbert Kalish and baritone John Moore bring gravitas and human depths to these nine sublime songs.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, composers like Edward Elgar, Rebecca Clarke, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor defined the sound of English classical music.
(energetic bright string music) Often lost in the crowd is Frank Bridge, a contemporary of Vaughan Williams, whose string sextet in E-flat major mixes the rustic charm of this golden age of English classical music with a touch of romantic attacca.
(energetic dramatic string music) This program features two essential English composers who, despite their ubiquitous musicological roots, demonstrate hardly a hint of uniformity.
