Dancers, we're going to turn around and give Tony T our full attention.
- Thanks for the introduction, Tracy.
Ooh, I hope you worked up a sweat learning those moves.
We're going to put the whole dance together in a little bit, but first we're going to create a song about the planet Venus.
(harp music) If you remember from last week, we used five musical elements to help us compose a tune.
Much like when you're baking a cake, you need a lot of different ingredients to make it.
A cake just doesn't come out of nowhere.
At least the last time I checked.
You need the flour, sugar, eggs, butter, salt, cream, and other ingredients to make it yummy and delicious.
To bake our song.
Wait, did I just say bake?
I mean to make our song.
We need a bunch of different musical ingredients.
Someone has cake on their mind.
A song just doesn't come out of nowhere, or does it?
(choir sings) Five musical elements we need are, a beat (drum set plays) a bass line (bass guitar rhythm) harmony (second guitar adds in) lyrics and melody.
When we put all of these ingredients together, we can create a delicious new tune.
I have to describe some other way of making a song.
By the end of this, I'll probably be eating the music.
(laugh track) A beat is the rhythm of the song that drives the music along.
Our Venus dance has kind of a Charleston feel that reminds me of Broadway and Jazz.
Broadway is named after one of the most famous streets in New York City and is the heart of the musical theater district.
In that case, let's use a Broadway swing feel for our tune.
Let's hear what that beat sounds like for our first musical element.
(drums play swing beat) The bass line is a lower sounding instrument that gives a foundation to a song.
Let's see a picture of a bass.
That's not a bass.
That's a bass.
I made that same mistake last week, (dramatic music) When you have a word that is spelled the same, but sounds differently.
It's called a heteronym.
He-te-ro-nym.
Fancy.
That's the kind of bass I'm talking about.
Let's lay some bass over that drum beat for our second musical element.
(bass & drum swing rhythm) Our third element to our musical structure is harmony.
Harmony is when two or more notes are played at the same time to create a pleasing sound.
Last week, we used chords for our harmony.
A chord, remember, is when you play three or more notes at the same time.
I'm going to have the strings play the harmony on the off beats like this.
(upbeat swing music) Since this song moves quicker.
I'm going to also add an oboe (oboe plays) and a flute.
(flute plays) When played together, they create a harmony with those two instruments.
An oboe is a type of double reed woodwind instrument that is usually made out of wood.
Oboes date back to the mid 17th century in Europe.
You most likely have heard of a flute and know what that is.
A flute belongs to the woodwind family as well.
Flutes have been around a lot longer and are found all over the world.
Some flutes date back some 35 to 40,000 years ago.
These early flutes were often made of wood and bone.
The type of flute that you play in a band or an orchestra however, is made of brass.
This is the type of flute that we'll use to accompany the oboe.
Let's hear what those two woodwinds will sound like in creating the harmony for our song.
(flute and oboe add in to previous song) Great.
For our fourth element, we'll find some inspiration from the planet Venus to use as lyrics for our song.
Venus is known as Earth's twin and is the hottest planet in our solar system.
It's named after the goddess of love and beauty.
And it is also the brightest object in the sky as seen from Earth.
Let's use these facts about Venus to build our song.
I like how Venus is really bright.
We can use something like "Venus, you're so bright" as a lyric in our song.
That can help guide us to find some other words that rhyme with bright.
Might, sight, right, light, tight, alright.
I'm sure you could think of a bunch more.
Venus is also known as the morning and evening star.
So we could say something like "Shining in the sky in the morning and at night."
It would also be fun to add something about how Venus is the goddess of love and beauty.
Maybe it could be as simple as "Your love and your beauty got me feeling alright."
And then we could wrap up the short song with something about how Venus makes us feel that rhymes with alright.
I like something like, "Venus, I mean this, I think that you're out of sight."
I also use the phrase, "I mean this" to rhyme with Venus.
Sometimes a little extra rhyme can make the song sublime.
Now that I think of it, this is kind of a love song, very fitting for a planet named after the goddess of love and beauty.
Let's add our fifth element, the melody to the Venus lyrics we came up with.
(swing music) I'm going to sing the song one time through, so you can hear what it sounds like.
And then I'll break it down so we can learn it together.
Here we go.
♪ Venus, you're so bright ♪ Shining in the sky ♪ In the morning and night ♪ Your love and your beauty ♪ Got me feeling alright ♪ 'cause Venus, I mean this ♪ I think that you're out of sight.
