At the age of 26, Scott Carrier set out to hitchhike his way across the country, from Salt Lake City to Washington D.C., with little but a portable cassette recorder and an Electro Voice RE50 microphone, recording the stories of those who offered him a ride. His goal: To arrive at NPR headquarters with enough material to earn him a spot on All Things Considered. And one way or another, it worked.
