And I can guarantee those words have never been spoken in Virginia ever before.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: Election day marked a milestone.
in Virginia politics.
Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the race for governor, becoming the first woman to hold the post in the Commonwealths history.
In her victory speech she told Virginians ABIGAIL SPANBERGER: We sent a message to the whole world.
That in 2025, Virginia chose pragmatism over Partisanship.
We chose.
our Commonwealth over chaos.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: The former C.I.A.
officer and three-term-congresswoman ran on a message of bipartisan cooperation with a focus on kitchen-table issues like jobs, education and lowering costs, winning roughly 15 percentage points over current Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
From her Loudoun County watch party Spanbergers opponent conceded her loss.
WINSOME EARLE-SEARS: I wished her success.
If she is successful, Virginia will be successful.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: But in Richmond, it was a celebration for the party.
DON SCOTT: Democrats, we're back.
I want to tell you guys, tonight we shocked the world.
We sent a message of love and hope over fear and cruelty.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: Democrats are now projected to hold all statewide offices and expand their majority in the house of delegates to more than 60 seats.
Along with Spanbergers win came many firsts.
State Senator Ghazala Hashmi secured the votes to become the first Muslim lieutenant governor and former delegate Jay Jones will become Virginia's first Black attorney general.
GHAZALA HASHMI: Virginia has chosen leadership that lifts up people instead of tearing them down.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: To close her victory speech Spanberger vowed to lead and protect all Virginians.
ABIGAIL SPANBERGER: And to those across the Potomac who are attacking our jobs and our economy, I will not stand by silently while you attack Virginia's workers.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: All election results are unofficial until certified by the state.
