NJ congressman says Chinese company's collection of personal information is security risk
U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5th) is pushing legislation that would give President Biden power to ban the TikTok app in the U.S. At an event outside the Bergen County Justice Center Monday, Gottheimer railed against the Chinese-owned company for threats TikTok and the Chinese Communist Party pose to the safety of children, data and national security by collecting non-public data on American users.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipin our Spotlight on Business Report tonight the backlash against popular social media app Tick Tock is escalating New Jersey Democratic Congressman Josh gottheimer is the latest Federal lawmaker pushing legislation that will give President Biden power to ban the app in the U.S at an event outside the Bergen County Justice Center today godheimer railed against the chinese-owned company for threats Tick Tock and the Chinese Communist Party posed to the safety of children data and National Security it's all by collecting non-public data on American users Tick Tock admitted to gaining remote access to that data and recently settled a class action lawsuit for harvesting personal data of Americans without their consent including that of children age 13 and younger now some government agencies including New Jersey have already banned use of the app on government-issued phones godheimer today said he'll again write to Tick-Tock demanding the company's cease all data collection and supports giving the Biden Administration the power to fight back if the company refuses Tick Tock is more than 100 million monthly active users collects far-reaching and sophisticated data from its users including usernames passwords personally identifile information pictures and videos of millions of Americans in the wrong hands this data is an enormous asset to the Chinese Communist Party a known adversary and their malign activities in fact Chinese law obligates tick tock's parent company 2 and I quote support assist and cooperate with State intelligence work so Tick Tock is basically bought and paid for by the Chinese Communist Party
