DEP says that work to remove lead-laden material will begin Monday
State officials unveiled plans Friday to address material found to contain lead on a Raritan Bayshore beach. The advocacy group NY/NJ Baykeeper raised alarms last week after announcing it had discovered the material on beach in Keyport frequented by residents and fishermen.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipin our Spotlight on Business Report tonight State authorities are pledging to quickly clean up chunks of lead from aaran Bayshore Beach a week after local environmentalists alerted them it was there the Department of Environmental Protection said it would take the lead on the cleanup in Keyport where the rocklike material was tested and found to contain lead the D plans to remove the material and then test the beach for any harmful heavy metals it's unclear how long the debris has been on ke port's Beach or where it came came from but it's concentrated in front of the polluted former aeromarine Factory that once made sea planes and the baykeeper who tested it noted that the chunks are similar to hazardous material at a super fund site in nearby Lawrence Harbor the D has promised to investigate the source when circumstances like these are identified it's our job to get out and inspect the conditions and try to identify if there are risks and then to hold those responsible for creating conditions like these that could uh create a risk to our environment or to Public Health [Music]
