Study ongoing into levels of toxic chemical in residents' blood
Experts from Rutgers University hosted a public meeting at Paulsboro High School Thursday night to provide an update on their work to study levels of the toxic chemical PFNA in the blood of town residents. Groundwater in Paulsboro has been found to have some of the highest PFNA contamination in the world, and that pollution spurred a drinking water crisis in the region about a decade ago.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell results are beginning to trickle in from a survey of people's blood in Paulsboro and scientists are encouraged by the early results Rutgers experts hosted a public meeting at Paulsboro High School last night to provide an update on their work to study the levels of the toxic chemical pfna and the blood of town residents groundwater and Paulsboro has been found to have some of the highest pfna contamination in the world and that pollution spurred a drinking water crisis in the region about a decade ago changes to the town's water treatment have been made so the water is safe to drink but scientists are now trying to figure out what if any health impacts will be the study which is funded by the CDC and part of a national effort aims to test the blood of 1 000 adults and 300 children in Paulsboro but so far only 551 adults and 45 children have been tested the Rutgers team leading the study is urging people to continue to get tested early results have found declining pfna levels in the blood of 21 people who also participated in a previous study meaning that the chemicals are in fact leaving their bodies over time and Paul's Pro the primary source was the high level of pfna that was in the drinking water so since the first the well was shut down in 2014 and then the water was filtered starting in 2016 and that well was walked back online as well as others that had have pfna contamination in the groundwater but that uh pfna is removed by the treatment very effectively and so we would expect that the results would come down this is confirmation of that [Music]
