I'm Meghin Moore.
Virginia's General Assembly reconvened this week to discuss Governor Glenn Youngkins amendments and vetoes.
Lawmakers in both chambers voted to keep the spending bill in their hands, restarting budget talks.
GLENN YOUNGKIN: That's what the work to do over the course of the next 30 days will be really targeted towards.
We've committed to start working.
MEGHIN MOORE: That was Governor Glenn Youngkin, who is hoping to work with the legislature to have a two-year budget finished by mid-May ahead of the fiscal years end on June 30th.
As lawmakers continue their budget talks, one of the biggest debates will focus on the future of Virginia's tax policies and how priorities get funded.
The Governor has talked about his “Common Ground” compromise budget, which would fund most of the priorities the General Assembly asked for, but at a lower level.
Here's what House Speaker Don Scott had to say.
DON SCOTT: I'm not sure if we have kumbaya on the final budget, but we have kumbaya today on how do we get on a path to a budget.
MEGHIN MOORE: One of the bills vetoed by the Governor was Delegate Nadarius Clark's House Bill 351.
The veto came just before a wave of gun violence hit Virginia's capital city.
Between March 31st and April 15th, eight people were shot and four public school students died.
Over the last five years 25% of firearm-related deaths were in people under 24.
