One day after plans for a $2 billion pro sports arena in Alexandria died, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued vetoes on legislation related to hourly minimum wage increases and a retail marijuana market.
The governor had signaled in public appearances he would veto these bills, which were priorities of the Democrat-controlled legislature.
The General Assembly reconvenes April 17th.
In Richmond, Mayor Levar Stoney presented his last budget proposal this week.
The nearly $3 billion budget is smaller than last year's, but sets aside $17 million for worker raises.
It also increases the minimum wage for city employees to $20.
LEVAR STONEY: As a city, we have to be competitive.
BILLY SHIELDS: City council has until the end of May to suggest changes.
And after a container ship destroyed Baltimore's Key Bridge, the Port of Virginia in Hampton Roads, said it's ready to take on extra traffic.
All shipping traffic to Baltimore is currently cut off by the wreckage, likely rerouting many ships to the Commonwealth.
The Port of Virginia doubled its container capacity at a facility in 2018.
