I'm Meghin Moore.
After months of ups and downs, Virginia's budget debate has ended as Governor Glenn Youngkin signed the new two-year budget on Monday.
GLENN YOUNGKIN: We understood each others priorities and perspectives and that came together in the budget that we are gonna sign today.
MEGHIN MOORE: Virginia's new budget includes the addition of $2.5 billion for education, $500 million for childcare, and a 3% raise for state employees, teachers and support staff.
George Mason University is the latest state school to raise in-state tuition costs for the upcoming academic year.
A 3% increase will address inflation and compensate for decreased state funding.
Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia also raised tuition prices.
May 17th marks the 70th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education , which declared racial segregation in schools unconstitutional.
A group of high school students in Prince Edward County became part of that landmark case.
They organized a school strike in protest of poor school facilities for Black students.
An unintended consequence of the case, the white flight that followed the ruling, leading to a decline in enrollment for majority Black schools and a drop in funding for new schools.
