Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship>>> RUSSIA'S INVASION OF UKRAINE AS FORCES LAUNCH COUNTER OFFENSES ACROSS CERTAIN REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY.
A CHAOTIC , THREATENING MUTINY FIZZLED OUT AND IMMEDIATELY PUTIN APPEARS TO HAVE RECEDED FOR NOW, BUT WHAT DO WE NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR?
AS A LAWYER WORKING IN UKRAINE, THIS CAN'T BE EASY.
WELCOME HOME FROM UKRAINE .
WHAT DID IT LOOK LIKE?
>> I WENT THERE TO REALLY MEET WITH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS BUT TO ATTEND THIS CONFERENCE AND WE GATHERED ATTORNEYS FROM ALL OVER.
I CAME AWAY WITH THREE IMPRESSIONS .
THE FIRST HAS TO DO WITH UKRAINIAN UNITY , AS THE COUNTRY IS UNITED AS THEY'VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE .
WERE YOU HAVE REPRESENTATIVES FROM SOME OF THE EASTERN CITIES , FOUR YEARS AGO, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN SPEAKING TO ME IN RUSSIAN, BUT NOW THEY SPEAK TO ME IN UKRAINE.
>> DO THINK THAT THIS HAS DRIVEN PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE SYMPATHETIC TO RUSSIA TOWARD UKRAINE?
>> ABSOLUTELY.
THE SECOND THING HAS TO DO WITH UKRAINIAN FLEXIBILITY.
THOUSANDS OF BUILDINGS, CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE, HOSPITALS .
SOME SAY THAT MOST PEOPLE CARRY A WALLET BUT MANY UKRAINIANS NOW CARRY TOURNEY CATS.
>> I WAS JUST READING ABOUT THAT.
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION ?
>> SO WHAT YOU DO?
WELL, WE'VE GOTTEN USED TO IT, WE DON'T DO ANYTHING.
I THINK THIS IS WHEN MOST OF THE ATTACKS TEND TO COME.
>> SO THEY JUST KIND OF GET TO A BOMB SHELTER, THIS IS A NORMAL PART OF LIFE.
>> PEOPLE HAVE KIND OF GOTTEN USED TO IT AND I THINK THE THIRD THING WOULD BE THE BRUTALITY OF THIS WAR , THAT THEY TURNED INTO A TEMPORARY CEMETERY.
IF YOU LOOK AT THESE PHOTOGRAPHS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED IN UKRAINE , IT'S THE BEST THAT UKRAINE HAS TO OFFER .
UKRAINE IS LOSING ITS BEST AND BRIGHTEST.
>> IT'S A TRAGEDY, OBVIOUSLY.
YOU HAVE THE MERCENARY LEADER , TURNING BACK AND ALLEGEDLY ACCEPTING SOME KIND OF EXILE.
>> I THINK THAT THERE IS THREE KEY THINGS WITH HIS PERSONA THAT HE'S BEEN PUSHING AND THIS PROPAGANDA.
YOU HAD IN GETTING WITHIN 200 MILES , SO CLEARLY ALL IS NOT WELL.
IT'S GOING TO HAVE A HUGE BOOST BUT IN THE SHORT TERM, IT'S NOT GOING TO HAVE MUCH OF AN IMPACT.
I THINK THAT THEY ARE NOW LARGELY DEFENSELESS.
>> SO HOW MUCH MORE I'LL THE UKRAINIAN MILITARY HAVE?
HOW LONG CAN IT WITHSTAND A TOUGH COUNTEROFFENSIVE BATTLE?
>> 40 MILLION PEOPLE, HE TRIED TO FREEZE TO DEATH , THOUSANDS OF BUILDINGS, HOSPITALS WITH THESE SIGNIFICANT ATTACKS.
THEY ARE MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER.
FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIMBS, ET CETERA , IT'S ABOUT RESILIENCE, FORTITUDE .
>> THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME DEBATE IN THE U.S. FOR THESE ROLES.
HOW DO YOU SEE ALL OF THIS?
>> THE KEY QUESTION NOW IS WHAT DO WE DO TO ENSURE THAT UKRAINE CAPTURES AS MUCH TERRITORY AS THEY NEED?
WE NEED TO STEP UP OUR SUPPORT AND ALLOW THEM TO REACH DEEPER INTO RUSSIA , COME CLOSER TO CRIMEA AND I THINK IT'S A LITTLE BIT PREMATURE AT THIS POINT.
WE NEED TO BE SURE THAT WE ARE SUCCESSFUL AND WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THEM WHAT THEY NEED.
