Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipI'm a Wisconsin kid I was born in Green Bay singer songwriter punk rock I started playing music when I was little I played like jazz trombone through high school and stuff jazz is a really good I think uh kind of music to learn because it teaches you how to sort of like look at a style or a song or or a structure or whatever and see how you can improvise and add your own thing to it so even though you're you're playing all these standard songs you're writing your own Parts with improvisation and [Music] stuff bewhere you know I think that helped me become a songwriter cuz originally I think whenever anybody starts writing they're just kind of listening their favorite music and doing their own take on it and uh so of course I started like that too and um but you know like I listen to a lot of different kinds of music I try not to draw from anything in particular it may be one of my weaknesses it may be one of my strengths but like a lot of my records the the songs are not all the same song over and over again style-wise like they're all over the place because I just kind of want to write what feels right in the moment it's been so long since I wrote a song that felt this real to me my dear you have become my new favorite dream I think that punk music in general gets overlooked lyrically some of the best lyrics I've ever heard have come from Punk musicians but you might have to listen to the song 10 times to hear what they're saying sometimes depending on how it's recorded or or whatever I hope to connect to an audience through those lyrics you lose something when you're just by yourself and you don't have a band to build up and crescendos and de crescendos and trying different um levels of songs and stuff so you have you have to do the emotions quite literally with singing up all night sleep all day not exactly something I'm proud of but I got [Music] B I started writing songs probably when I was like 16 or something I try to explore different styles of writing obviously like um you know from other people's point of view or things like that but most of the time I just kind of take the emotions I'm feeling and and try to use it to help me get through something which hopefully helps somebody else get through something and 90% of the time it'll be something we don't even use it's not even good but every now and then you you strike oil right inside my head I'll try and get some sleep it's been so long since I wrote a song that felt this real to me my dear you have become my new favorite dream
