I'm George Graham.
This time it's a western New Jersey-based band who bring a melodic, folk-influenced sound to their original songs.

I was playing two or three songs at a coffee house years ago, and the guy went up and gave me a card and was like, "Put a whole set together, I'll book you".
And then, then we started, you know, building out other people and writing, you know, with different musicians.
And then a few years later along came Connor, and then we kind of started working on our first album together.
And then fast forward to this past year we've been playing together and still writing.
And when our album, "All We Tried To Be" was being made, we wanted to do some new stuff with it and kind of have this personal goal of let's do everything possible we set out to do with this.
And that's where Julia, my cousin, came in.
We did some harmonies together and looking ahead, like this group of guys here, all really talented musicians in their own right, we're kind of making the next generation of Water Street tunes that are are coming out and being written as we speak.
So I grew up on like early 2000s John Mayer.
I feel like his guitar is pretty telling.
He's just like from lyrically as a guitar player, he's just very well versed.
But more recently I've liked a lot of indie pop bands too.
There's a band called Valley who I really like a lot.
A lot of the songs on "All We Try To Be" too are also in like a drop tuning guitar.
So I've also really been influenced by some musicians who mess around with playing outside of standard guitar tuning too, so.
- Yeah.
Well we are cousins.
- Not all of us.
- It was really honestly - Just the two of us.
- Yeah, just the two of us are cousins, but I would volunteer for this organization called the Charles Heller Foundation.
And the year of Covid, we couldn't.
We would perform a musical every year, but because of Covid we couldn't do anything live.
So what we went to was performing songs and dances on Facebook and asking people to donate money to them.
So I posted a video of myself singing "Let's Hear It for The Boy" and David saw it and texted me maybe like a half hour later - Whoa!
- And was like, "Do you wanna sing harmonies on our upcoming album?"
And I was like, "Yeah, sure".
So like one Saturday, in 12 hours, we recorded every harmony for every song.
And then about a year and a half later the album came out.
- This next one we're gonna play is called "People".
And it's kind of serves as our title track of the new album.
Well new, it came out last year.
And the line in it is, "People, that was all we tried to be", and we kind of wrote it in the middle of Covid and all the craziness going on.
And it's kind of just about, you know, people have different opinions and different ways of viewing things.
And I think we all can kind of try and work together to get along, "Play nice now, you hear?"
(chuckles) As people.

And I was like, "Yeah".
So I, I don't know, I just texted you.
What did I do?
- Yeah.
- I don't know, we just talked for a while and he was like, come to our rehearsal and yeah.
And it was cool.
So I'm still here.
(chuckles) - I, well you might've heard the story before, (laughing) but I was actually, I remember the exact moment, I was in my basement playing my guitar and I happened to go on Instagram and I saw a DM from Mr. Paulson.
And at first I thought it was like some random, like, spam message and I almost didn't look at it, but then I looked at it and thank God I did because it's been a great time so far.
- So, you know, we had kind of just different people who were in Water Street for a good amount of time.
And then, you know, like anything with time, things change, people either get married, or have a job or move and we kind of just had a cycle of that happening.
And we, I think the three of us had kind of talked about, me, Connor and Julia, and we really consciously wanted to bring in people who were interested not only like there to learn the songs, but also interested in that creative process because that's kind of where we're looking to go next.
Like now that we have an album out, we're trying to make the next new tune.
So we wanted to bring people who we felt like were energized and looking to be engaged in that whole process too.
And, I'm really excited and just kind of over the moon that we have these guys here with us now in that process, so.
- I mean, I think the songs that already exist are kind of a great bed for that to happen on to bring in people that aren't familiar with it and kind of figure out who plays what role.
I mean, it's a testament to the songwriting that you can have three random guys that you just met and we sound really good immediately on the songs.
Like they're a great bed of rice for the musicians to season and add meats and vegetables to.
Yeah.
(laughing) - - [Interviewer] Are you hungry Alex?
- A little bit, yeah.
- Yeah, I wanna give a quick shout out also to some of the people up here tonight.
Alex Kerssen on the keys, killing it.
Eddie Woodcock on the electric and Brendan Gardner back here on the bass, keeping it funky.
- Whoo, hoo, hoo.
- Keeping it funky, keeping it fresh.
- Absolutely.
- Yes, so I don't know if I ever told you this, but I jammed with Connor once when I was a junior in high school.
The two of us were like, "Hey, let's play some music together".
And we found out years later that after that we left that jam session we were like, (scoffs) never playing again with that guy.
Never!
(Julia laughing) We actually were talking about doing a Halloween event.
Like we'd play music while people trick or treated.
And then Connor was like, "Yeah, okay, maybe".
And then I hear back from the night and then he was- - Ghosted.
- What was that?
- Ghosted.
- Ghosted, yeah.
(laughing) Absolute ghosted.
And then I saw a picture or a video of Connor in a full body Gumby suit hanging out with, with his actually soon now wife at the time.
And I was like, "That guy ghosted me and - Worked out.
- Didn't text me back.
And what do I know?
Years later, they're happily married.
But it's just, it's always really funny how people kind of come back full swing into your life.
And that's kind of a really other cool thing.

And a few years back, my grandpa actually came up to me during Thanksgiving and he had asked, he had this idea of writing a song together for my grandparents' 50 year wedding anniversary.
He's not a songwriter, he does not claim to be, but I was like, "Okay, cool, get me some words, get me some ideas.
And we'll try it out.
We'll see what we can get".
So he sent me, it was an iPhone screen, it was a picture of words on an iPhone.
So like phones can take screenshots, but this was like a literal screenshot that he sent me of some lovely, wonderful, corny (laughing) lyrics.
But we took them, we had to find the one weekend that grandma was away on vacation so we could write it together.
But we did and we gave it to her on their anniversary.
And it ended up being the first song we recorded on the album.
We actually have a music video out for it too.
And it's kind of a way that we can get to tell the story of how they met and fell in love.
