Thank you for.
Whatever camp you want to jump into.
Go right ahead.
You know, we had five freshmen and two sophomores on defense today.
Playing their tails off.
So, you know, again, we're taking receipts and, you know, we'll see you at the national championship.
Well, that did not age very well.
That was 11 months ago, at the end of the 2024 season.
Now, as we head into the month of November and say goodbye to October, LSU has said goodbye to Brian Kelly, fired as a head coach of LSU last weekend following the embarrassing loss to Texas A&M inside of Tiger Stadium.
Kelly was the winningest active coach in college football when he was walking the sidelines.
Now he's one of many looking for a new opportunity.
And with that, we say hello.
Glad to have you with us for game notes here on LP alongside my Super Bowl champ partner, Scott Shanley.
I'm Victor Hall.
We have a lot to talk about, Scott, and let's just get right to it, because this week, remember, Baton Rouge has seen two head coaches fired in the span of six days.
Terrance Gray's a week ago.
Brian Kelly last Sunday night.
Your thoughts on the job for Brian Kelly, what he did coming off that embarrassing loss to the Aggies and then subsequently 24 hours later, being told you're no longer needed?
Yeah, I think I think this whole thing started even before Bronco James Franklin.
Jay Franklin was a very college coach of Penn State, and I think a lot of coaches around the country are really nervous right now.
And it's amazing to me.
You know, you you watch this LSU football team.
You heard that vibe from Coach Kelly.
Everybody was high on this team.
You watch them smack around Clemson to start the season.
Hopes were even higher and you thought you had a championship defense.
And then things just kind of went sideways.
Drifted for a while.
But I've never seen anything change.
So fast.
At halftime of a football game to the beginning of a fourth quarter of a game, and this whole thing went went downhill in one quarter.
LSU was winning at the half against A&M, got blown out in the second half.
The stadium got empty.
Next thing you know, there's meetings on Sunday thinking there might be staff changes being made.
And instead we would then find out it would be the head coach that happens on Sunday.
On Monday, then LSU announces that Frank Wilson will be the interim coach.
He is beloved by players, the love by the state of Louisiana, one of the top recruiters in the state.
He practiced with his team on Tuesday and Tuesday afternoon for the first time, we got to hear from LSU interim head coach.
I'm a part of the fiber, of the state of, in earnest high school football, youth football that is extremely humbled, extremely honored, to be given this opportunity.
It's it's something that you would dream of, something that you don't know if it would ever come true, but something that you prepare yourself for.
I recognize this, this, this, this moment, this opportunity is so much bigger than me.
I just happened to be the caretaker at this moment for this wonderful institution, that we so love.
It's our flagship state university.
We have tremendous pride in it.
I will do my very best, and die trying to represent us, as a university, as a state, as a community.
To the best of my ability, with with dignity, with honor, with pride.
The way LSU has always been and will always be.
I was watching, quite some time ago, when when we got bombed and, at Pearl Harbor and the sirens went off.
Whoo hoo!
And that sound effect.
And it was an alert.
It was a all call.
It was a rally call for us to come together.
We emulated that today for our football team.
And as those sirens went off for the rally call.
Our team merged together at the 50 yard line.
We held up all four of our fingers in both hands.
We chanted fourth quarter.
We chanted, finish!
Because we're all in.
So here is the bio on Frank Wilson, who?
You see his age.
Of course.
He's a New Orleans man.
Played his ball at Nichols.
You can see where he was as an assistant coach.
Long time at LSU.
But remember, he also left to be the head coach at UTSA and McNeese.
And we should remind you, he was the head coach of McNeese and left that job to become an assistant back in Baton Rouge for LSU.
So you can see what it means for him to be a Tiger and to now be leading the Tigers football program.
Here's more from Wilson.
I was a head coach at another university in this state.
I left that university as the head coach to come back here.
Right.
And, and I chose to I chose to come back here because it's a very, very unique place that there's no place like LSU.
I've worked at universities in this conference across this country.
And this something about the people here.
And so when you speak of LSU, you can you can talk about the beautiful stadium, the patio.
Right.
The concrete, this beautiful facility that we're that we're in.
But LSU is not bricks and mortar.
It's the people.
It's the people that make LSU what it is.
And we live and we thrive in a people's society that as we evolve into relationships, it cuts deep.
And so it's totally different than another school where you just go to work, that you become a part of it.
It becomes a part of you.
And it's the people in this building.
It's the people in this community.
It's the people in this state that gravitates, that pulls.
You win.
And it's why we say forever LSU, because it's not just a job.
You're a player.
You're not from Louisiana.
When you're here and speak like that, what's the reaction?
I just sit here and shake my head.
That's a guy who gets it.
He he understands the job that he's getting put into, thrust into it.
And it's a wonderful opportunity, a great opportunity.
This is you and I have done some LSU postgame shows, pregame shows.
This our third coach that we're going through.
Third coaching change for LSU.
And you know you went from les Miles and everybody wanted Tom Herman and Jimbo Fisher.
And you ended up with the interim coach Edwards on.
And you want to mess championship.
Things spiral out of control that you ended up with with Brian Kelly.
So I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Frank.
I think just by listening to him talk, he's going to command a locker room.
He's going to win a lot of respect.
And what if you see this LSU team extend and take off and play the way they were supposed to play through September and October?
You don't count anybody out at this point.
You can hear the passion, you can feel the passion in his speech.
And that's why recruits love him and we should let you know with all these new rules in college football.
Now, if a coach leaves, right, players can leave.
Not one player has left the program.
Not one recruit has bailed out on LSU program as of this point.
And in fact, LSU gained a recruit.
So there's some positive vibes, some good feelings with Frank Wilson of what you heard on Tuesday.
On Wednesday at a news press conference for Snap benefits for residents of Louisiana, the governor entered the chat.
We are not going down a failed path.
And I want to tell you something.
This is a pattern.
The guide is here now.
They wrote the contract cost Texas A&M $77 million.
Right now.
We got a $53 million liability.
We are not doing that again.
And you know what I believe?
I believe that we're going to find a great coach and maybe we'll let President Trump pick it.
He loves winners.
You know I'm not going to be picking the next coach.
But I can promise you we're going to pick a coach and we're going to make sure that that coach is successful.
And we're going to make sure that he's compensated properly and we're going to put metrics on it because I'm tired of rewarding failure in this country and then leaving the taxpayers on the foot, you know, to foot the bill.
So yeah, absolutely.
So like in the next game whose I got you know, I can tell you right now scoreboard is not selecting the next coach.
Hell, I'll let Donald Trump selected before I let him do it.
Who will be I don't know, but the Board of Supervisors is going to come up with a committee and they're going to go find us a coach.
All righty.
So if you want to know about how far how powerful football is in a state, just look at what's happened here in a span now of 72 hours you get from Sunday night.
No, coach.
Then you have a new head coach giving positive vibes.
Then the governor steps in and says Scott Woodward, for those who don't know, LSU athletic director will not be making the decision.
That was Wednesday.
On Thursday, the governor doubled down on national sports shows and on local sports shows.
And then by Thursday night at 730, Scott Woodward had issued a letter.
I'm leaving LSU real quick, I think.
I think everybody kind of thought that's where I was heading.
Anytime you say we are not letting the athletic director pick, pick the guy who's going to coach the sport that generates the most money.
Lissa Scott Walker, it felt personal that that talk up there, but I think, his hiring of Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M and then the bio with Brian Kelly, everyone automatically looks and says he does not hire coaches.
He hired Jay Johnson, he hired Kim Mulkey.
So he does know how to hire coaches.
Maybe.
Maybe he's guilty of not knowing how to structure good buyouts and good contracts.
But he went after two of two very winning coaches in college football.
And like I said, this whole thing, if you were competitive against Texas A&M, you and I are sitting here just previewing the next game.
None of this is happening.
It was the way they lost and the spiraling out of control and the chance at the end of the game.
It was just an ugly second half of a football game.
And Friday morning, the LSU board took action as they named verge.
Auburn now the interim athletic director.
I want to know our fan base.
Know one thing LSU has not broken.
LSU athletic department is not broken.
I think we have the best athletic department in the country.
I think we have the best staff in the country.
The executive team is second to none.
I put them up against anyone.
They are the best and they will get the job done next chapter is that high football coach.
I'm going to have the best football coach there is.
That's our jobs now.
Go out there.
We are not going to let this program fail.
LSU has to be in the playoffs every year in football, there's 12 teams that make it.
It's going to expand here.
We have to be one of those at LSU.
No substitute.
Well, in this day and age of us and everybody wanting to get into sports betting, bet Sports online, the betting service put out the odds are ready for favorites to get the LSU job.
Joe Brady, former offensive coordinator for us in the 2019 team.
Now in the NFL.
Everybody's listing Lane Kiffin.
But at the top of the list according to the odds.
The odds on favorite right now is John Summerall.
Well, he is currently the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave.
The odds came out on Monday.
On Tuesday, Summerall was getting his Tulane team ready to play UTSA, and he was asked about this and about the degree of distraction to him and his players.
There is no mid-season transfer portal for our players.
There is no midseason coaching carousel for me or for our staff.
Like, we've got plenty of coaches that have had opportunities to leave.
Last year, if I didn't want to be the head coach at Tulane, if I was most concerned with coaching at a powerful school, I wouldn't be here because I've had those opportunities.
If I was only making decisions based upon money, I wouldn't be here because I've had other people offer me more money.
I freaking love what I do, I love where I do it, I love who I do it with.
Now I'm coaching this freaking team.
And that team was in San Antonio, the Alamo City, Thursday Night Football against UTSA, who has not lost a home game in about five years.
Well, right off the bat, four minutes in, Jake Retzlaff caps off a seven play, 75 yard drive with this touchdown.
The two point conversion is no good.
What distraction Scott at six nothing.
Oh but UTSA answers in less than two minutes.
Oh and McCown to David Amador.
It's seven six now.
It's ten six when McCown finds Devin McEwan.
And it's 17 six.
Early second quarter for UTSA turnovers a massive problem for Tulane on Thursday night here Rhett's laugh floats one.
It's picked off.
This is one of four turnovers on the game for the Greenway.
Well that happens.
And then just a couple of minutes later it's a trick play to put UTSA back on the board.
Amador gets it.
Now he's throwing on McCune.
So we've got quarterbacks now tossing it to receivers who are throwing it to other receivers.
It's become a laugh.
Are 24 to 6 again McCown to Amador 31 to 6 at this point UTSA McCown goes.
Are you ready for this 31 for 33.
What 360 yards and four touchdowns.
Amador had ten catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
UTSA racked up 523 total yards to get the win over Tulane, 48 to 26, who now have to rebound and get set for another road trip next week at Memphis.
The Grambling Tigers are back home this weekend after a huge week in Vegas one week ago, taking down HBCU number one Jackson State off the strip.
Now they look to keep the momentum going.
Hosting Alabama A&M.
Hey look head coaches are always busy.
And that's no different for Mickey Joseph.
He was on his way down I-20 to Monroe when he was nice enough to spend some time talking to me about the win over Jay State.
Coach, when we visited with you on campus, back in late July, early August, you had your team at practice and you were trying to instill some toughness and you were trying to instill what type of identity this team was going to develop.
What did you learn about the team following Saturday night's win over number one Jackson State over in Vegas?
I know one thing I know they will fight.
I know they will fight for 60 minutes.
And identity is that we want to be tough.
We want to be a tough football team physically and mostly mentally.
And that's that's what they showed Saturday night.
No, nobody in the country, nobody in the world thought that they was going to win that game, you know.
You know.
So we knew that we would win the game.
We knew it was going to come down to the last, the last play of the game.
But we knew that Jackson State's a really good football team, but we also know we're good football team.
And we knew the previous two Swac games, you know, against Peavy and against Texas Southern that we gave those games to them.
And we knew against Jackson State we couldn't give him anything.
So we will we will we will prepare.
The coaches did a great job of preparing the team.
And the kids executed the game plan.
By the way, let me just state for the record, he wasn't driving.
Okay.
Let's make sure we now feel better knowing he had somebody driving.
Let's just make sure we say that.
He also gave me an update on their quarterback, Xavier to said he still remains in a Las Vegas hospital after being knocked out of the game with two minutes to go.
Joseph said his quarterback is responsive, has family still with him, along with staff members from Grambling and still asked for fans to keep him in their prayers.
So he and I also talked about the fact, but the quarterback position and what the team will have to do moving forward in the stretch run of the season.
You talk about holding on the ball, integrity.
You mentioned you brought Bradford there for a reason, and he certainly is running the ball extremely well.
But now you've got questions at quarterback too with he's trying to get healthy.
So have you talked to that unit.
Do they have the confidence you need to move forward to be able to handle the things you just talked about, like protecting the ball and the execution?
Well, like I told some of the kids.
And so and as a Nebraska, you know, it would be Minnesota 84 to 14.
And we threw three passes.
So the run game can be effective.
If you get a hat on A.D., identify what we need to do as far as identifying the run.
So, you know, we're going to try to run the ball.
We go throw some high percentage passes, but we're going to try to take much pressure off those young kids that we can.
But at the end of the day, they are quarterbacks.
And it's not the first time playing quarterback, playing quarterback since playground ball.
So they understand the pressure that comes with just playing that position.
So we're going to try to take the pressure off them.
Coach, you're going to use a young man, a quarterback that ended the ball game for you.
Oh yes Dan Berg the kid from John F Kennedy out of New Orleans.
He will be the starter.
And Hayden Bay from Louisville, Louisiana will be the backup.
And then, Byron Ethan Junior, also, they have a role at Wildcat quarterback.
So we got to use all three.
We're going to use all three.
Well let's stay in the Swac now where the Southern Jaguars are back on the road for game two under interim head coach Fred McNair.
They're in Arkansas to face Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Maybe this is the week the Jags return to the win column.
They've won four in a row in this series nine of the last ten and playing on the road.
The Jags are 19 four and one.
It's a 2:00 kick.
You can check all the all the action on Swac TV.
Well two teams separated by about three 3.5 hours will face off tonight in Lake Charles.
The demons from northwestern looking for their second win of the season, going up against the Cowboys for McNeese, who last week took one on the chin in a loss to Nicholls.
It's the first time since 2021 that the demons are making the road trip down to Lake Charles.
They're coming off a lost, a 15th ranked Lamar in a game that they were in for about three quarters before the Cardinals pulled away late.
Let's hear from the two coaches for tonight's matchup.
Northwestern's Blaine McCorkle and the head coach of the Cowboys Matt Vautour.
The one thing that I've been impressed with this team, in comparison to last year's team, is they've really stayed together really well.
They're positive, they're upbeat.
I think as a team, you know, you're always going to have your detractors in there.
You always do in any organization.
But for the most part, they really see the big picture.
They've got really good perspective on the program and where it is and where we're going.
I think that gives them a lot of encouragement.
So, I think just staying the course, you know, McNeese is an interesting football team right now in the day where we are in the season right now, our program's got to be more about us than the opponent.
You know, we've got to handle our business.
But we need a very strong team right now.
You know, they haven't had the season.
Probably.
They've wanted to have, but when you turn the film, they still look like McNeese, you know?
And that means something in FCS football, that means something to Southland.
I mean, they're a very name brand.
There's no doubt in my mind.
I mean, watching them and whatever they're you know, I know they're 1 in 7, but they're a lot better than they were last year.
I give coach McCorkle a lot of credit.
When you watch their football team, they're physical and they do some really good stuff.
You know, they're sound.
They know what they're doing.
It's like they.
They've got a plan.
For coach B, it's all coming back in his second first year.
It's their second stint.
So, I think he probably knows exactly what he's doing and where he wants to go in the program.
And you can kind of see that on film a little bit.
Look, it'll be a tough game.
I love the northwestern McNeese rivalry.
I've always liked it was always one of my favorite games going back through the years as a team.
They really don't like this.
I mean, that's just that's just our rivals.
And, we're just ready to go out there and play and compete again.
You know, Scott, the one thing with that's the comment you heard there from Braden is two teams are trying to find their way.
They're struggling.
They're both in the rebuild process.
But now you're getting into those rivals.
It's just hatred.
Just get out there and go play some football and try to figure out which team could find that boost that they need.
That's right.
We've said for the last couple weeks, what's it mean this time of year.
Well he just said the key word.
Whatever.
None of these teams don't care about any other game before this game.
They don't care about what the record is.
They don't care about what their rankings are.
And offense, defense, running the ball.
It's all about playing this game.
And that's all I care about.
And so it's going to be a, a black and blue physical game at the line of scrimmage.
And I think both these teams have shown improvement the last couple weeks.
You can't deny that.
Yeah, that's the one big thing.
Remember voters back at McNeese for a second, Stan McCorkle coming off a year where they had one and what, two and a half years, they finally got one win.
So it's a slow process and we're learning.
But as both coaches said, they've seen signs.
They've seen moments of rebuild.
And that's what you need to use moving forward.
Yeah.
And I think coach McCorkle last week he talked about a perfect hey, we're playing a lot of young guys.
There's not many young guys playing in the conference.
We're playing most of them.
So future bright days are ahead.
Be patient.
It's hard to tell people you patient holidays.
But I think when you see that many young guys playing, the future's bright and I think they have it's well it's about developing players.
And I think you're seeing developing players week in and week out getting better at their craft.
Well, they will meet tonight in Lake Charles, another team that is on the rebuild as the Colonels from Nicholls down and Tebow.
And they're coming off their second win of the season in a fine fashion against those Cowboys from McNeese one week ago in Thibodaux earlier this week, I had the chance to catch up with first year head coach Tommy Wright back, and I asked him about the resiliency of his team and what he's seen.
I have them grow from the tough losses, the close losses and also the two wins through those games.
What have you seen, grow on with this team?
How have you seen this team develop and maybe develop its resolve to get you to where you are now heading in to the final 4 or 5 weeks of the season?
Yeah, resilience is big, and being able to continue to work every day to improve, even though you're not seeing, it pay off every Saturday, I think is is big.
It shows a sign of, a good team chemistry, a good team culture.
And that's exactly what we've been doing.
We've had a lot of young players playing.
We played over 20 freshmen this year, and they're playing pretty consistently throughout each of the games.
And so seeing those guys grow and develop throughout the past few weeks has been big.
And now they're starting to play our style of football, and we're starting to play a little bit better games.
You still seeing them, coach come to you with that confidence and resolve you had there during the fall drills and fall camp, getting ready for the season.
I know the results haven't always been there, but you haven't seen them fade away.
Have you seen them still getting that buy in as you get ready to load up into November?
Oh yeah, without a doubt.
Our team is in a better place now than we have been all year, and it's been building that way for the last few weeks.
That's the thing.
The message that I continually tried to send was, hey, our team practices hard, our team gets along.
Our team does all the things that you would expect a winning team to do.
We just unfortunately hadn't been able to have the results that we would like.
But if you came and watched this practice throughout the last month, two months, you would have seen a team and you said, man, this team probably got a five, five and one record, four and one, something like that, because they work the right way and those things are going to proceed.
The positive results every time within any, any sport.
We certainly appreciate Tommy Wright back in his time.
Look, there are three teams in the South Conference that are four and zero.
Then there's a next group of three that are two and two.
That's where the kernels are because they're two wins are both conference wins.
And this afternoon they will face Houston Christian.
It's homecoming for the Colonels.
Last year they lost when they missed a field goal at the end of the ball game.
That snapped a nine game win streak over Houston Christian.
Don't forget, they also have to worry about the number one running back in the Southland Conference that Houston Christian has as well.
This game can be televised.
If you're not making it out there to man down and tip it.
Oh, check out all the action on ESPN.
Plus.
Let's turn our attention out of the Warhawks on Joe Monroe.
It's been a rough stretch as of late.
Losses to Southern Miss and Troy and, Coastal Carolina by a combined 109 to 43.
So it's been a bit of a bumpy road.
But remember last week going to the game?
They had an active player list of 30 players on here with injuries banged up.
That list is about the same heading into this afternoon's game as well.
But head coach Brian Vincent says they're not in the business of making excuses right now.
You know we're a team that that's a loss.
It's the exact number, but I'd say it's high 20s or low 30s.
So two that I experienced.
But it's it's watching this, you know, it's college football is what it is and tweak that.
And the beauty is when you see guys, you know, like Allen and Grace step up and you see guys like Braven that were knocked out there playing with Penny for his team.
You see, Charlton didn't get hurt on the first play of the game.
Pretty tough edge or and he says strap me up on the bill.
And that's the mentality of this team, a defense which sees you and likes and you go on and on and on.
Really all grow old team.
And but it's it's the toughness and the grit and the perseverance that I'm really proud.
This will be the first meeting between Old Dominion and you all Monroe for the game kicking off in Monroe this afternoon at 230.
Colton Joseph for ODU, 42,000 passing yards and 19 touchdowns.
So the Warhawk defense has to be ready for him.
Dylan Howell on the defensive side, he's tied for second in the Sunbelt with four sacks.
If you're not making it out to Monroe to see the game in person, you can check out all the action on ESPN plus.
Well, one week after a road loss to Troy, the raging Cajuns back on the road and back in the state of Alabama, this time outside of mobile, the face South Alabama, the Cajuns of dropped for the last five sitting at two and six overall, one and three in the Sun Belt.
That's the same record for the Jaguars, who are coached by former Baton Rouge native and Catholic high school star Major Applewhite.
Interesting note in this series, the road teams won the last four matchups, so could that be a good sign for the Cajuns?
We'll find out at 230.
You can check out all the action again on ESPN plus.
I don't just staff in the team, though, that we gotta learn how to celebrate, though I do.
I have to learn how to celebrate, appreciate the victories because they're hard to come by and you don't always out.
Sometimes you take it for granted that they're just going to keep on coming and that that's not always the case.
And I think what we got to be able to do is what I've got to be able to do is appreciate that a little bit more with our team and our staff.
And, but I was disappointed after the game.
I thought we could have made a better showing.
And, but then you realize some of the elements that come into play, the that and the other team, the opponent does have something to do with that also.
So, moving forward, learning to do that, I'll learn, have more fun and, enjoy those, those moments with the guys.
But, I think when you, when you looked at our effort again the other day is outstanding.
You know, we had some great individual efforts, but the way we're playing and executing at a high level is probably as good as we've ever had.
Since I've been here, on both sides of the football and special teams, I think we've got some explosive guys in the return game.
The Chi Joseph's and a couple of really good pop returns this week.
Brandon, as a kickoff return speaks for itself.
And then, I think on both sides of the football, offense and defense, our line of scrimmage is really solid.
And, you know, that's good and allows us to control the game for.
Well, so far in the 16th ranked Lions have had plenty of reasons to celebrate as of late, riding a four game win streak still undefeated and south in conference play, the last win on the road at Houston Christian, where Brandon Hayes once again a kickoff return for a touchdown his second and two weeks, and it earned him South and Conference special teams player of the week 52 yards of no fraternity and certainly foot field position.
It's a battle of lions tonight at Strawberry Stadium.
East Texas A&M paying a visit Scott, take a look at the numbers of what southeastern has been able to do here in this four game win streak.
Because we talk about the two quarterback system and how efficient.
But you hurt yourself with just talking about all three aspects.
They have outscored the last 34 opponents 170 to 45.
And this is a complete football team.
And I think the sign of a really good team is you find many different ways to win every single week.
The defense you keep playing like that, you're going to it's a lot easier to win football games.
But the special teams is great in creating field position.
We talk about the two quarterback system, been outstanding on offense.
And then when you don't play your best and you still find a way to win, that was last week's game.
They still find a way to win and turn it on in the second half is a complete football team.
Should be a good matchup tonight.
We look forward to it.
Has been crazy week here in South Louisiana for football.
So you know what.
Let's sit back and enjoy some football.
Enjoy all the games on the field and we'll look forward to wrapping it all up with your Sunday night here.
Post game for Scott Shanley and Victor Howell.
