Oh, and we are off and running.
Glad to have you with us here.
Welcome to Game Notes, everybody, on this Saturday, week four of the college football season.
He's the Super Bowl champ that Scott Shanley and Victor Howell.
It's great to have you with us, Scott.
At that point in the college football season now, where so many teams are on the verge of opening conference play.
I don't know what you call them in the NFL if it's a look ahead game, a trap game, but some of these teams, you got to make sure you're not looking the next week when it really starts to go.
And that's hard to do it really.
As I know coaches and players always say the right things, but we're all human.
When that schedule comes out, it's it's circulated in locker room, just like it is amongst news rooms.
And that home around the around the table.
So teams have a hard time at this point in the season because right now people are either telling you you're worse than you really are or you're better than you really are.
So you need to stay focused.
It's a fun of fundamental football technique.
Football will always win, so those are the things you just need to stay true to what you've been doing since the start of training camp.
Funny you said that too, because we have a coach that almost says that exact same thing, and we'll hear about that in about ten minutes.
But let's start about a game in Baton Rouge where two of those teams are about to enter conference play, but they're going to meet later tonight in Tiger Stadium.
That's they're only separated by 40 miles.
It's LSU and southeastern the Lions making the trip over to Baton Rouge just the third meeting between these two programs.
The last time they met, it was back in 2018.
LSU has to make sure it doesn't look ahead.
With Ole Miss on the horizon.
That'll be next week up in Oxford.
And then afternoon kick for the Tigers.
They definitely have to stay focused tonight and especially on offense which is we all know if LSU through three games has been a struggle.
Earlier in the week, we heard from head coach Brian Kelly for the first time that Garrett knows Meyer has been battling an injury and he has not been 100% and has had to alter some of the things he's done on the field.
On Thursday, he updated that a little bit and explained why.
Garrett knows Meyer will indeed be on the field tonight against southeastern.
Because he's feeling good.
We we had to limit a lot of things that we did the first, you know, 3 or 4 weeks and, you know, he's finally, you know, coming to practice, feeling good and getting into a good rhythm.
This is his best week of practice.
So we want him to go, and play the game, at a level where he's, he's comfortable and to hold him back.
Really, at this point would would not be the right thing for him, you know, so he's excited to play because he feels so much better and I don't want to say, hey, he's back to the Garrett Ness Meyer.
But there are a lot of things that that he couldn't do that, that he had to kind of adjust to.
And it's it's good that he's back, you know, and doing the things and throwing the football the way he feels and comfortably.
Scott, it speaks highly to the fact that LSU is undefeated having played Clemson and then the Florida game in the SEC.
But then but but you look at some of the numbers, the points dead last in conference play.
Passing yards 11th.
Now if he's injured maybe we understand it.
But some of those under the other numbers don't necessarily involve him and his torso.
But it is a point of concentration.
Probably it is because coming into the season, I think Nuss was one of those guys that everybody had right up there with Klubnik and Arch Manning as the top quarterbacks in the country.
Those two guys have been struggling, but I think more of his struggles have been because he hasn't been 100%, which there's there's a lot of expectations when you when you follow Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels offensively at LSU, that's just the way it is.
And so you saw it in the postgame press conference last week with Coach Kelly getting a little bit frustrated because they're finding a way to win games when that offense isn't top ranked or scoring 40 points a game.
And I think as a coach, you take pride in that, but the offense can be better.
Stephanie, the running game, you got to have them.
I know you've mentioned quarterbacks.
Best friend of the running backs Dana Bynum.
Got to get that running game better at only 110 yards a contest for LSU.
One of the friends though for LSU and especially on the defensive side, which I want to talk to him about a second, it's been special teams.
And Brian Kelly actually talked about this one week ago after they got past Florida, when he said this might have been our our MVP of the game and what he did.
We're talking about Grant Chadwick, the punter last week against Florida, four times inside the 22 times inside the 15.
And we know that Tiger defense attendance is back and got the DJ like way into the term of five interceptions in that ballgame.
Scott, when you were on the NFL level, you had the luxury of having a guy named Thomas Morstead that when your offense led by Drew Brees maybe did not score, it wasn't clicking Morstead was the kind of guy that would pin a team back.
What is that like from the defensive side, when you can pin your years back and say, okay, you want to score, you got to go 90, you got to go 86, you got to go 94.
Because he's basically flipping the field.
And this LSU defense, as good as we know, has been.
That's basically what he's doing.
Yeah absolutely.
And you know believe it or not, there were weeks when drew and the offense struggled.
Not very often.
But when you look at what Chadwick's doing and and what Thomas Moore said did for us, when you can flip the field position like that and you can make a team go 90 yards as opposed to six yards, just by getting good hang time on your punts and not let him have punt returns.
Those things are all hidden yardage.
And I played for coach of Coach Parcells and coach Sean Payton.
They were huge into hidden yardage.
Every week after games, we would look at how many hidden yards we won the game or lost the game in penalties and special teams plays.
So special teams, it gets boring sometimes where it's all three phases, and if you go in two of those three phases every week, you have a chance to win football games.
Yeah, it's been a key for sure.
There's going to be a very unique homecoming.
If you will, tonight inside a Tiger Stadium and involves a current tight end for LSU, is not stepping in for trade as green while he's been out.
Young man we're talking about Bower Sharp.
He's been outstanding playing the position including that huge run he had against Florida on the catch and run one week ago.
Well, you might not know that when he came to LSU he came via Oklahoma.
But before that yeah Bower Sharp was wearing a Lions uniform two years here.
He is in the Lions colors.
He was playing for Frank self.
Oh he just wanted to get on the field on special teams.
Wildcat out of the quarterback playing tight end as well.
Earlier this week Frank cell phone southeastern campus talked about his fondness for Sharpe as a player and a person.
You know Bower came in.
Nobody recruited him out of high school, right.
And, we brought him in as a quarterback.
We just thought he was a great competitor.
And he proved that when he got here.
And after the first year, he came to us and said, look, I just want to get on the field somehow.
And we said, maybe the best place for you right now is to be able to go on no special teams.
And he just jumped at it, proved himself on that.
And then we just saw value in him, as a player.
And we went back to him and said, look, we can get you on field all the time if you just make a position change.
And he says, I'll do whatever I need to do, not only to play, but to help us win.
And that's the person you get.
By the way, coach said, I had a surgical procedure.
You at the press conference.
When you see this, you're seeing the other guy, right?
But he said, everything is fine for southeastern.
You're two and one.
You're getting ready to start south in conference play.
He has not shied away from coming into this ballgame.
What's the biggest thing for them to take away from the challenges they'll face and take us?
Well, just like we said a couple weeks ago and Grambling was going Ohio State a little bit different, I think you tell your guys, enjoy it, enjoy the moment, don't get caught up in what's going on, but compete, compete every play.
And I think just Bower, I think is one of the cool stories about the NFL.
And then the portal and all this is you get caught up in too many transfers, this and that.
But under recruit, a guy developed late, couldn't figure out what position they wanted to play him.
He's been in the portal a couple different times and now he's playing at LSU.
It's a cool story.
That's one of the good things about being able to transfer, because you never know how your career is going to turn out once you get to college.
Yeah, 40 minutes down the road.
These guys know each other.
It's tonight kickoff.
You can see the game on CCTV.
CCTV again.
It's the third time at the Lions and the Tigers will square off.
It'll be a fun one in Baton Rouge tonight in Tiger Stadium in Natchitoches.
The demons for Northwestern State back on the road this weekend.
This time they're in Texas to face Prairie View A&M.
And in a way, wanting to right a wrong from a year ago where they fell inches short, literally from getting a win last year as last year we can't go back and change it.
And we had this circled for the past year.
Now we have we've been waiting for 365 days.
Yes, but you know, it's just another game another week and we just have to go out and do our job, play fast, physical and execute up front.
What have we learned since that moment last year?
Last year we were not a mature enough team.
We didn't have the culture, the character, the mindset to have earned the right to win that game.
Now, we could have won that game.
And we talked about this as a leadership council just earlier today had we won that game, it actually might have slowed down the progress of the growth of the program because, you know, sometimes with success you relax a little bit.
And we might have relaxed a little bit in this.
Some of the lessons we needed to learn along the way last year.
Now, I don't ever want to say that was a good thing to lose a game.
I'm not saying that we want to win every time we go on the field, but there was a lot of lessons to be learned after that game and throughout the rest of last year that had we want it, I don't know.
We'd be where we are now.
And I think what this game does is it allows us to reflect on all the lessons we've learned the last year and now go show it, you know, and what better opportunity to do that than against the same opponent where so many lessons were learned, and see what Northwestern State can do.
It's a 6:00 kick tonight on the road.
Looking to avenge at last year's 3731 loss.
You saw the highlights literally inches away.
Failed on the goal line conversion.
Panthers are allowing over 205 yards rushing per game.
Maybe Northwestern State's running game can get going tonight.
If you want to check out this game, you can.
It'll be broadcast over on Swac TV.
In New Orleans, quarterback Jake Retzlaff is your American Athletic Conference Player of the week.
Last Saturday, with so much attention on a former Green Wave quarterback now playing for Duke, Retzlaff stole the show 245 passing yards, 111 rushing yards to lead the team, and a school record for rushing touchdowns, and Tulane seven point win.
The wave now three zero heading to Oxford and excitement around and for the team that is on the rise for Tulane.
Just don't ask coach to talk about all of that excitement right now.
This is a I mean it's hard.
And our guys got to get over that one's gone forever to me.
And this next one is all that matters for the next week.
And, you know, I think the thing I fear is like, just complacency.
And our players, everybody tell them how good we are when I'm like, we've we beat a team last week by seven points.
And the week before that would be a team by two points.
And the week before that, we scored a field goal on the second half.
Wow.
So good.
You know.
So it's like we better freaking wake up.
You think he's laser focused?
Scott is ready to go here guys Ole Miss.
And look this is a team they're going to be facing that has beaten Tulane 13 straight times dating back to 1989.
Yeah you will.
And you look at Tulane.
They've had a couple of measuring games last weekends Duke.
And now this is the true measure.
So game play playing sec SEC opponent.
And you know in honor of course all the time there's a couple of yo stats for for Ole Miss 15 and one at home the last two seasons over 43 points and 528 yards at home.
And since 2020 number one in the country over 508 yards per game.
Lane Kiffin can coach offense, but the good news is Tulane has a defense.
But you got to be ready for that environment.
Yeah, they have to be ready and doing it on the road.
That's John Summerall on the resume now of his team that they're putting together this season.
And the challenge they will face in Oxford this afternoon.
It's going to be a handful, but, it's it's fun to measure yourself against the best.
And I think that's what's made our non-conference schedule.
I think entertaining is it's it's a it's as challenging of a Group of five non-conference schedule probably out there, you know.
And so I think us and I would say South Florida's but we don't have a game and they do.
And so I'd say we both have really put ourselves in situations where you're measuring yourself against good people each week.
Don't forget Ole Miss has LSU coming next weeks.
Are they looking ahead over Tulane to 230 kick this afternoon.
Here's one more yo for you Scott.
The, the yards per game.
They're 541 for seven.
That's this season.
Look at the points per game.
You ready?
I smell an over.
I smell an overcoming by the way Ole Miss 22.7 seconds per play.
Fastest in the country.
So this game will be up and down the field there in Oxford.
Only one non-conference loss since 2012 for the Ole Miss Rebels should be a good one.
It's a 230 quick kick between the Wave and Ole Miss.
The Nicholls Colonels, coming off the bye week tonight, is the first of four straight road games who put that schedule together for the Colonels.
Coming off of that by the Colonels are now in San Marcos, Texas.
Now famous, a former Southland Conference opponent tonight.
Texas State.
Texas State is now in the Sunbelt, and they're now about to get ready to leave that conference.
The Bobcats have won the last two in this series, most recently 24 to 3.
That was back in 2019.
A win for the Colonels would snap a two game losing skid this season and and a 12 game losing streak to FBS teams.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 tonight.
You want to watch it?
You can.
It'll be on ESPN plus.
2019 was the last time the Bulldogs from Louisiana Tech started the season three and at home they can reach that mark tonight hosting two one Southern Miss a perfect time to see if the dogs can keep the momentum rolling.
From last weekend's dominating win over New Mexico State to open conference play ballots, that was the key word.
They got it done through the air and on the ground on offense on its way to 49 points in the win.
Head coach Sonny Cumbie this week talked about the progress the team is making.
I think the way that Blake played, you know, I think he solidified that, I think that Coach Frankland did a really nice job of staying in rhythm and having a plan for both.
And I thought those both of those guys, Trey and Blake, did a great job of staying in rhythm themselves.
We had a lull in the third quarter.
I liken it to, you know, it was really one of those like offensively, you got the feeling it was kind of like, you know, when you have like if me and Teddy were sitting around and we just trying to decide where we wanted to go, you know, I might say I like this place.
Teddy may say I like Fratello and Kamu.
Hey, I want Log Cabin.
And we just look at each other like, hey, guys, what do y'all want to do?
And we don't do anything.
We've got to play four quarters on offense.
It was balanced squad for sure.
353 rushing yards, 221 passing yards.
They finally got the offense going.
But to me, the other side of this is the defense.
And I take you back a week.
When they were playing LSU you only gave up 23 points.
Goal line stand LSU kicks a field goal but you only scored seven.
Now that defense is there the offense comes alive.
It was almost like let's just wait for them to catch up, right?
And all of a sudden you find that that groove goes back to the earlier conversation you had.
You're in week three.
You're still trying to figure out your team a little bit.
And what Louisiana Tech figured out when they played LSU and their home stadium is, we got a pretty good defense.
We just don't have to mess up on offense.
They're still trying to figure out the quarterback situation.
It looks like they're settling in on Blake Baker and what he's been able to do, especially with his legs.
But you go from Coach Cumbie who was an air raid guy.
Texas Tech throw the ball 60 times a game back in his college days.
That's really who he is.
But to his credit, he knows he has a good defense.
And now it's ground and pound.
They rushed for almost 7060 yards last week.
Yeah no doubt about it.
They gave up two touchdowns early pitched a shutout in the second half.
So tonight here comes Southern Miss at the Joe two and one against two and one.
In terms of the record.
You see Southern Miss leads the all time series.
Last home game for Louisiana Tech for basically a full month.
So they're going to try to get it done at the friendly stadium there in Ruston.
You can see the game will be broadcast tonight on ESPN plus, just down the road from Ruston, where Louisiana Tech is, is where we find the Warhawks from you on Monroe.
They, of course, are coming off of a bye week.
It's been sort of quiet out there.
An odd feeling in Monroe, especially when your team gives up a 70 Berger against Alabama the last time they were on the field.
Remember, we did not hear from head coach Brian Vinson after that ball game, but it's given this team time to refocus, do some self-evaluation and now get back on the field, which they are ready to do tonight.
Earlier this week, coach talked about what he has seen from his team coming off of that Bama loss and trying to turn things back around.
I thought it was a great week, you know, and that that was our that's what we wanted to kind of our theme like how are you going to respond.
What are we going to do.
You know we've been knocked down but we ain't we ain't knocked out.
We gotta get up.
You know, we got to get up.
And I thought our players got up and you know, it was just a heightened focus and urgency really as a, as a, as an organization as there should be.
And we know there going to be tough times.
And, what do we do next.
Well, next is going to be facing the miners from UTEp.
So you're coming out of the Sunbelt Conference playing a team out of the conference USA.
But one thing this offense has to be ready to do tonight, Scott and that is going to be a block up front against this miners defense.
There's no doubt they play on the other side of the line of scrimmage.
They're third in their conference on defense.
But number one in sacks and tackles for loss.
That makes you two as an offensive lineman.
That makes you sit up in your chair.
You pay attention meetings that week because this defensive line is coming and they're changing the line of scrimmage.
If you don't want to believe what Scott just said, just ask Coach Vinson how to figure it out, because here's what he's going to tell you.
It's not hard to see how good they are.
Just look at him from one week ago.
They understand, you know, because you can turn on the film and you can sit there and watch UTEp D-line get after Texas.
His offensive line and Texas tight ends, play after play after play.
They really they won the line of scrimmage there.
They did.
You can go back and watch it.
They won the line of scrimmage.
And so you know Utah State's got a good football program.
UT Martin's got a good football program.
And then you see them go into Texas and do it again.
So obviously you know that gets everybody's attention.
And they are legit.
They are real and they're good.
And they fall out of the football and they create problems for you defensively.
A little bit of a later kick out in West Texas, 8:00 will be the start time for the Warhawks and the miners from UTEp.
Second meeting all time UTEp one.
The first one back in the 2020 season.
You see Braylen McReynolds seven and a half yards a carry.
So you have to unleash him if they can against that tough miners defense.
You can watch the game tonight.
We broadcast on ESPN plus.
Let's stay on the I-20 route in North Louisiana and finish up with this with Grambling, who's moved to two and one on the season last week with that thrilling 83 yard fumble return for a touchdown in overtime over Kentucky State.
That was the play of the game.
The player of the game very well could have been quarterback Xavion to set 228 yards passing and two touchdowns, 99 yards rushing and two more touchdowns.
Tonight they're looking to go three and one against winless East Texas A&M.
But hey coach Joseph can we expect the see to set leading the charge again running the ball.
No it's not a good quarterback.
What if the quarterback runs got caught within a system.
He you must have you must be talking to him because he's like goes I just do it the way I want you to do it.
But now he's obviously.
And we know he can run, focus, get he's a very honest kid.
He can take the pressure but he also get it back to you.
You know, I made a bad call.
You said that's on you.
Oh, absolutely.
I said, that's on me.
I said, well, next time I need you to bail me out.
Bail me out, sky, you got to bail out.
You know, Coach Towson in an offensive scheme.
He's saying, hey, I'm trying to control my quarterback, but on the left side might be an outlier because it was against Ohio State.
But in the other two games you can see what he what does that has done.
Yeah coach Joseph he played the quarterback position.
He was an option quarterback.
So if anybody knows about getting hit a quarterback it's coach Joseph.
He's trying to save his quarterback.
Listen to me son.
You don't want to get hit every play.
You want to back in the pocket.
So Coach Joseph knows exactly what he wants out of his offense.
He wants to be balanced.
And sometimes you have to prevent keep players right.
Protect them from themselves.
What I'm trying to say, because athletes want to take the ball and they want to run and coach.
Just saying, let's just play within the system.
Let's stay balanced on offense and it's been awesome.
The last couple games have been coming up.
Come on, let's see if we can keep that momentum and get them to three and one on the season.
Hey, down in Lake Charles, congratulations are in order for cowboy quarterback Jake Strong.
Name the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the week for his efforts against Weber State.
He accounted for 323 total yards for touchdowns.
He threw for two, 78 and two scores.
He added two more scores with his legs rushed for another 45 yards in the contest.
Unfortunately for the Cowboys, those numbers didn't add up to win after the comeback came up short.
You remember they went for the two point conversion and the win and they came up short and missed it.
They made a trip out west there at Maverick Stadium in Logan, Utah for tonight's game with Utah State.
The Aggies on the season are two and one.
First final non-conference game for the Cowboys.
Again, one of those teams set to start conference play next week.
First time since 2012 they actually face two FBS teams in the same season.
Remember they played Louisiana a couple weeks ago?
You can check out this game and see how the Cowboys do on the road.
It'll be televised on the Mountain West network.
Let's talk about the cages now over in Lafayette.
The good news is they haven't started conference play.
I remember coaches saying, these games that we've been playing don't mean anything.
Our goals are still ahead of us.
That's the good news.
The bad news conference play starts next week, and they've got to try to figure out a way to get things going, especially on the offensive end.
It has been a struggle tonight.
They have one more opportunity to do it on the road.
At Eastern Michigan earlier this week, head coach Michael Desormeaux said being careful but being direct on what he's talking to with his team to get things back on track.
As a coaching staff, you have to be very matter of fact.
This is this is not good enough and here's why.
Here's the things you need to do to have success here.
And you move on.
You know, I don't believe in sitting in a meeting room and just brow beating somebody for not playing well, that, I know, prepared really hard and I know tried really hard to go out there and go play well.
And they didn't, you know, it was a tough environment to play in.
You know, it was a really good environment against a really good football team, and we did not handle it very well.
You know, we get this thing on a run like I told them, I said, get on a run and you get in a championship game.
A championship environment feels like that.
And we got to handle it better next time.
The response was really good yesterday.
Came out here, flew around.
Guys are ready to go and that's what you have to do.
Scott here's the concerning.
Remember they've got two really good running backs Warren that just a moment.
But remember Walker Howard started the season played almost a full game against rice.
But since then ten of their 16 completions on the season or by Walker Howard.
These are the numbers that frighten you.
If you're a Cajun fan of the passing game.
Yeah, the passing game has to get going.
I think if you look at this offense, their shining star has been running backs.
Allen Perry's been playing really well.
Yep.
But last week against Missouri 36 total plays on offense.
You lost a time possession about 42 to 18.
And a lot of that comes back to I know as a defensive guy, I talk about playing defense, running the ball.
But offensively you have to be able to complete those passes to get you into third and short.
And right now the offensive passing game just isn't there.
And with conference play starting next week against Marshall, the Cajuns know the importance of getting the kinks worked out and get some momentum going.
You work year round on things that you think that that fits your offense, right?
And we have those things and we're not executing them really well right now.
So more than new plays and new things, it's maybe just being, more creative in the way that we package it.
We work really hard here to try to hone in on what we think this team is going to be.
And look, you have things that happen that that every year that kind of change, maybe the shape of your team a little bit.
Right.
And we've been able to adjust and adapt that well over the years, whether it's injuries at quarterback or on the O-line or wherever it was.
And that's what we've got to do.
We've got to find a way to maybe package some things differently.
So, Scott, you heard him say, I'm not one of those guys.
I want to browbeat him in a classroom and go over and over on this.
But how do you avoid desperation, which then can lead to panic, which then can lead to everything just falling apart?
When you look at the numbers that we just saw and you realize our running game is not there yet and our passing game is nowhere to be found.
Yeah, I think the way you frame it is you just played a really good team.
Missouri is a really good team.
They can be play with almost anybody in the SEC.
That's a tough environment to go into.
The positive is your point.
In Eastern Michigan, who two weeks ago lost to Long Island, which I didn't even know they had football.
So those are that's the positive is you have you're going against a team that you have you should win.
And so those are the games I think as a coach and a player, you get more frustrated if you don't play well in those type of games than the games in Columbia, at Missouri against a really talented Tiger team.
So maybe this is a good time to have the game they're going to play tonight because they are on the road for one more.
This will be up at Eastern Michigan.
