Week five is in the books, and we welcome you to post game notes here on LP.
I'm Victor Howell.
It's great to have you with us, with a lot to talk about and a lot to watch in the next 30 minutes.
McNeese and LSU.
Both of those schools closed out their non-conference schedules against each other in Baton Rouge.
The Raging Cages from Louisiana opened conference play with a thriller in Lafayette, and we'll get to those games.
But let's start with focusing on the three schools on the I-20 corridor, and we're going to start in Grambling.
It was homecoming for the Tigers.
They were hosting Alcorn State.
This game was nuts.
We're going to pick it up at the start of the third quarter, because it's already 2821 Grambling.
Or check that the opening kick goes back 97 yards from banks and it's 3521 Tigers.
Later in the third, Alcorn Jalen Tolbert, one of the best quarterbacks in the Swac, goes to the back of the end zone to Damien Jones who stays in its 3528.
Tigers get the ball and they're driving.
Jacoby Robinson hits Byron eight and junior across the middle 30 yards on the game, but he coughs it up before he goes down and the Braves take advantage of it.
Crucial turnover there because they would cash it in.
Tolbert to Jones again, this time along the sideline.
A bust of coverage gets behind everybody and he makes a house call 62 yards and we're tied at 35.
It's time for the fourth quarter.
Buckle up 3835 Alcorn four plays into a drive Ernest Temple scores from four yards out.
Now Alcorn up ten.
The Tigers come back.
Ashton fly to Byron Eaton junior 45 yards here as he makes the cutback plus a penalty in the backfield for Alcorn moves the Tigers even closer to the goal line.
That's the fly.
Takes it in from two yards out.
It's 4542.
Tolbert then 40 yards here down the middle.
Hits the breaks gets it into the end zone.
And once again all caught is up by ten.
If you can find any defense please pick up a white courtesy phone call everybody.
No defense in this game whatsoever.
They were up and down the field all afternoon long.
Next play from scrimmage for Grambling Elijah Ruffin with the pick off.
So two plays later Frederick Robinson scores.
Now notice the time.
It's 5942 with ten minutes to go in the game.
But Grambling doesn't give up.
Showing some light here.
Mason Dickerson look at the catch in the back of the end zone.
It's 5949 with the Braves are up ten with under five to play.
Then what.
Alcorn could not afford a turnover.
Jalen Tolbert not only loses 12 yards he fumbles in the Tigers jump on it.
So decision fourth powers his way in.
Oh my.
It's a 5956 game.
And we have time on the clock.
If all court gets a couple of first downs they can end it.
Put on third down here.
Jalen dullard with his only pass breakup of the game.
And it was crucial because Grambling gets the ball back.
40s to go Ashton Fry hits Jordan McBride or Jordan Boyd on a third and 20, but he gets 24 yards to keep the drive alive.
And two plays later, fry hits Tyson George for the 11 yard touchdown completion.
Holy cow!
Grambling comes back to win this ball game.
Five throws for 203 yards and two touchdowns.
Jakobi Robinson threw for 167 and two times.
Tyson George six catches, three of them for touchdowns.
What a win for Grambling to get to one and one in the slack.
Look at the total yards 1200 yards total yards in this ball.
Next up that Russ Gantlet of a schedule continues to Grambling.
They will host Jackson State Saturday night.
It's a rematch from the Independence Bowl two years ago in a game that was dominated by Army.
Army in rust in the face of Louisiana Tech.
To close out the Bulldogs non-conference schedule.
5.5 minutes into the game, Sergio Snyder burst through the line and he's gone 24 yards for the touchdown.
Tech is up seven.
Nothing on game notes.
On Saturday, we heard Sonny Cumbie talk about how difficult it is getting ready for this style of offense.
Look at the misdirection summary Howard 30 yards on this run for Army.
Four plays later Zach Mundell from 21 yards out on the pitch.
Look at the Bulldog defense playing trail.
And we're tied at seven.
Just over five minutes to go in the first half.
On the doorstep of their own end zone.
It's third and 11.
Trey hits Mr.
Reliable Eli Finley across the middle.
That's 25 yards and some breathing room, but they wouldn't have to wait very long.
Next play dialog.
Brooks.
Is he down?
Is he?
No.
He's gone.
They had him all wrapped up, but he keeps those legs turning.
And he visits the house 72 yards on the completion.
And it's 147.
Third quarter now for Army on the option for this thing is so nice to watch this kind of offense when they can work it like this.
54 yards for summary Howard he's gone after Army gets a two point conversion.
They're up 1514.
Next Bulldog possession.
Little razzle dazzle Trey Kuka to Marcus Kyle Wise junior on the lateral.
And he throws it to die on.
Brooks is waiting for it.
He's gone again.
74 yards on this completion.
They go for two and get it.
So now tech is up back by a touchdown.
2215.
Same score.
Mid third Kuka waiting looking scrambling running scoring.
Takes it in 28 to 15.
Louisiana Tech early fourth quarter.
Army scores on a one yard scrum to make it 28 to 22.
That mixed extra point from Louisiana Tech was crucial.
730 to go.
It's a 32 yard field goal.
And remember that how big this is 3122 huge points for the Bulldogs.
A minute 20 to go.
And wait a minute is this is this army throwing the ball.
But it works.
Kale Helms to Brady Anderson 31 yards.
And it sets up another one.
Parker Pelosi for the touchdown six yards out.
It's 3129.
You know the onside kick is coming with a minute seven to go.
And Army has to get it.
They get one good bounce but nobody can get their hands on the ball.
It's out of bounds.
Belongs to tech.
That's it.
And that's all tech wins it 31.
Brooks seven carries for 119 yards plus two catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Army's 270 rushing yards as a team.
85 yards below their season average.
Louisiana Tech opens up conference play next weekend at home against the Rage and Gauges.
Here's Sonny Cumbie after the game.
Two years ago in the bowl game, we knew what type of an opponent they were and how tough they play, and just the brand of football that they play from a physicality standpoint.
I was just so proud of how our players approached it.
They played, you know, there's talks of, you know, how physical games were against LSU and Baylor.
And they were because we played them and this game was physical because we played them.
And that's the mindset and mentality and the style of football that our guys practice.
That's that's who they are on a daily basis, how they work, how they approach everything.
And I was just very proud that they got to to put that on display in a winning effort.
Again, we're not here to just play hard.
We're here to win football games.
And they did that tonight.
Well, Saturday evening the Warhawks from Monroe found themselves in mobile, Alabama taking on South Alabama to open up conference play in the Sun Belt Conference.
Head coach Brian Vincent, hoping that lessons learned from the non-conference schedule could lead the Warhawks to their first win of the season.
He knew it would be a tough one against a team that keeps the ball almost 35 minutes a game.
Let's take you out to mobile and show you how this one played out for Brian Vincent, a company trying to get his team ready to go.
He's talked about needing good starts and being better on third down.
Well, this isn't the starting one.
40s in Jared Hollins goes deep to Brendan Jenkins and Jenkins is running away from everybody 72 yards later.
And just like that it's seven.
Nothing's three plays into the Warhawks first possession Aiden Mental scrambles loses the ball and it just bounces right into the lap of Marion Darby who takes it back 21 yards a minute.
47 into the game and it's 14.
Nothing South Alabama later in the first.
So look at the toughness from Zach Palmer.
Smith breaks a tackle breaks another tackle.
Dodges two more tacklers.
He goes into the end zone.
The flag was on South Alabama.
So count the points.
It's 147 Warhawks have cut the deficit in half.
Next Jaguar possession Jared Hollins goes up top to Anthony Eager.
Top of your screen.
And look at this catch with a man draped all over Shorty eight yards on the reception.
It would lead to a one yard touchdown.
It's 217 now 287.
In the second quarter Aiden Armenta to Marcellus Jackson.
They finally pulled him down after a great fight to get to the 20 yard line.
And that leads to this Armenta to Parker Forum.
Touchdown.
It's 28 to 14 Warhawks hanging in there.
But it's 3114 at the half and we go to the third quarter.
It's another big splash play for South Alabama.
Hollins 35 yards to Anthony Eager.
Hollins was 14 of 19 on the night for 321 yards and three touchdowns.
Next Warhawk possession Armenta to Cade Callahan 36 yards here on the completion that would lead to a touchdown.
Are meant to threw for 355 in this ballgame.
But at this stage the Warhawks were basically swapping scores with the Jags.
And that wouldn't be productive.
Hollins to eager again for the 69 yard touchdown.
Egor had four catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jaguars had 12 big splash plays for 388 yards, and the Hawks remain winless as they head into their bye week.
Here's head coach Brian Benson.
Really found out a lot about our football team in the second half, and who's willing to stand up and lead and play and who's got desire.
So some positives in the second half.
Thought we had a lot of fight offensively there towards the end and really proud of you know we just got to find out who can step up and fill some holes for us.
I think we got to learn how to tackle.
We got to learn.
We got to play better third down defense.
We've got to do better.
We've got to finish drives offensively.
It's really everything.
I mean, we've got to get better in all three phases.
We really do.
So there is no bad week.
It's a work week.
That's what we've got to do.
Well, there's been a lot of disappointment and tension so far this season.
On the bluff under first year head coach Marshall Faulk.
Jaguars not living up to what he expects to see them do on the field.
But they were hoping to get past some of that and turn things around.
Saturday night it was homecoming for the Southern Jags and they were hosting Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Remember we heard their head coach on game notes say hosting us for homecoming.
You know, that usually means they expect us to lose that ball game.
Well, let's see how things would play out in this one.
Wyatt McCauley got the start at quarterback.
That's because Christian Johnson, one of several players, disciplined and did not play in this ball game.
He hit Dijon Smith here to end the 12 play, 75 yard drive in the back of the endzone.
Jaguars open it up and they're up seven.
Nothing.
Garrison Davis then pinball his way to a 33 yard gain.
Where is the tackling 123 with a spin before he finally gets brought down inside the five yard line.
It ends after Arkansas Pine Bluff has to back up a 12 yard toss to to Avery Robinson, and this game is tied at seven.
Second quarter it's ten seven.
Jags are up Arkansas.
Pine bluff is moving when Davis hits Dmytryk Whitlock 15 yards in the touchdown.
It's 1410 now.
Jags down by four.
It's 1710 at the break.
So let's go to the third quarter here Wyatt McCauley wants this one back.
Scrambling gets as close to the sideline as he can before he throws it into the end zone.
It's a bad pass.
And Raylan Spratt picks it off.
And that leads to this Davis to Robinson connection again 30 yards on the touchdown 2710 and 11 play 92 yard drive for you APB end of the third.
Jalen Jennings with the eight yard touchdown.
And before you know it it's 3410.
And Arkansas Pine Bluff is starting to run away with this fourth quarter Davis this time to Bryce Robinson for the touchdown a five play 80 yard drive.
It now has them up 41 to 10.
After posting a ten seven lead to end the first quarter, the Jags got outscored 34 to nothing and averaged almost ten yards every play.
It doesn't get any easier next week against Prairieville.
Who knows that the starters who were disciplined will be back in the lineup, but head coach Marshall Faulk isn't using that as an excuse for this performance and says changes are coming.
The one thing that we're doing is we're trying to as we have players who play, we play a lot of players.
We need those guys to step up, and if they weren't ready to play, then, that's their lack of accountability to their teammates.
And that's that's our accountability as a staff to make sure that they are ready to play.
So, I don't I don't really look at that.
You know, it's they take reps, they're practicing, they sit in meetings, they do all the things that's necessary.
And if they got thrown into the fire and they weren't expecting it, that's the problem.
And, you know, we'll fix the problem.
I told them, I said, look, we're going to find the guys who want to play as we're going to do.
I feel like we had some players.
I can't say everybody, some players kind of quit.
They tapped out a little bit, and that's what it looked like today on the field.
And we don't subscribe to that.
Those people, they will not they will not be here.
They will not play here.
We're not having that.
Let's go across Baton Rouge now to Tiger Stadium, where Matt Vito told us on Game Note Saturday morning.
It was an honor for his Cowboys to get to come to Baton Rouge and face LSU inside a Tiger Stadium.
He knew it would be an uphill climb, but he said, hey, we're going there to compete.
As for LSU, Lane Kiffin was hoping to have the opportunity to play a lot of players as they get ready to finish out their season with nothing but SEC competition.
So let's take you to Tiger Stadium and show you how things played out Saturday night.
It was family weekend for the Tigers and company.
Nice crowd on hand to see the Cowboys make the two hour drive over.
Opening drive for the Cowboys.
Omari Wiggins.
Watch a couple of moves here.
Turns it up 17 yards and has the Cowboys in LSU territory with three plays later Jake Strong looking left side stepping backwards slings it.
And that's not a thing you can do against this defense.
Kicked off by Marcus Cooley.
And he brings it back 21 yards.
That gives the Tigers a short field.
Dylan Jones knows exactly what to do on the direct snap.
Takes it into the end zone.
And the Tigers are up seven.
Nothing under four to go in the first.
Look at the nice misdirection here Leavitt Jesus teammate coming across the line.
That's Roman mother said for the touchdown 14 nothing early second quarter Sam Leavitt once again from the 30 looking towards the end zone doesn't see Lorenz of the Bulls.
Remember this happened against Louisiana Tech as well.
The Bulldogs brought it back for a touchdown.
This one the Cowboys just stopped the drive.
Matt Vitalis likes that effort.
Midway through the second Landon Clark is in at quarterback.
He keeps it and scores right side up 21 nothing.
Third quarter.
Check out the formation for the Tigers.
Look come in here in the backfield.
That's big number 99 Deuce Gerald.
He gets the direct snap and scores 42.
Nothing.
And with the score you get the celebratory slam dunk on the sideline 49.
Nothing to go with five minutes 49.
Nothing with five minutes to go in the third Brady barrier finds Jamal Levi.
Watch him tiptoe down the sideline and he's going to take it for six.
Beautiful reception and 43 yards.
And the Cowboys are on the board 497.
After the Cowboys forced the Tigers to punt.
It's Levi again, this time 64 yards on the end around 56 to 14 as McNeese adds another touchdown on the board.
Four minutes to go in the fourth.
Watch Stacy Gage make one move, cuts it up the middle, turns on the Jets, and he's gone.
39 yards for the score that made it 63 to 14.
LSU wins it on an historic night for offensive production.
They ran over 100 plays of offense and 731 total yards.
That's the second most in school history.
McNeese has the by week.
Then they will be at Northwestern State in Natchitoches.
LSU's next game next Saturday on the road at Kentucky.
Here are both head coaches after the game.
Oh, we played hard and I thought we really kept battling.
Like I said, I'm getting credit.
I mean they they executed, I think at a really high level.
They put a lot of pressure on you with their tempo.
And the problem is, is, you know, we're not the first ones to have this problem against them.
You can't do the ball enough to get them off the field.
They keep coming right back on offense.
And there was a conversation, you know, where they asked me about, you know, do you want to run the clock in the third and fourth quarter?
And I said, no, you know, I just I don't believe in that.
You play the game, man.
We decide when the game is over, by the way that we play and how physical did we play.
And so I told the guys when I told them that we don't do that and challenge them, you know, come out and play really well and set a tempo of how you play in a standard, regardless of whether you're first, second or third team about how you play at LSU and how you you should make the game that people don't want to schedule.
You kids played hard.
We just couldn't do enough on my fence, really to, to keep them off the field.
But they're really good on defense.
They give you a lot of problems.
And I just said we just offensively couldn't do enough.
But we battled on defense, kept battling.
I think we defended over a hundred plays tonight, which is way too many.
But we just couldn't get enough going consistently.
And and they executed a very high level.
So give LSU credit.
Third down they got it.
Fourth down they got it.
So they kept out for the most part for the first half they kept every drive going.
So got a really good team.
And you know hopefully we'll learn from this and get better.
Another team from the Southland Conference Tommy right back in the Nicholls Colonels in Houston looking for right back.
His first road win as head coach facing Houston Christian HQ already has a big win on the season in conference play when they opened up the season with a win over southeastern.
I'm showing you here all five plays to open up the first quarter.
For Nicholls.
That was Thomas Hoffman for six yards, Thomas Hoffman for six yards.
First down to Horseman Hoffman right side for six yards.
Then let's give it to Thomas Hoffman.
He loses a yard.
And then finally Ian Rodrigue.
He gets sacked for six yards.
Those five plays are the only five plays Nicholls ran in the entire first quarter.
It's three nothing Houston Christian as it stands here in the first.
Let's go to the second.
Still three.
Nothing to we have another field goal Lucas Smolin hits it.
It's now six.
Nothing Houston Christian this was a low scoring fair.
Colonels try to end it at the end of the half.
I try to tie at least get three at the end of the half at the field goal here.
Why did you from 57.
He had the leg.
He just pushed it outside.
So it's six nothing Houston Christian third quarter now nine.
Nothing.
Ian Rodrigue back to pass looking across the middle.
But it's overthrown and picked off by Javon Arnaud.
He'll meet everyone in the end zone.
It's a 48 yard return and we have our first touchdown of the ball game.
It's 16.
Nothing.
End of the quarter.
Colonels have fourth and goal from two feet.
They go direct snap and they come up short.
Shane Lee gets stopped by that HQ defense.
But the defense has them pinned up against their own end zone.
Watch the scramble.
Watch the pass.
It's actually complete.
But there's a flag on the play.
It's holding in the end zone and that's a safety.
So the Colonels are on the board.
Six minutes to go in the game.
Nice catch here by Jordan Smith.
We show you this because he had an outstanding game.
But unfortunately two minutes after this would suffer an injury and had to be carted off the field.
It's a big blow for the Colonels and a miserable night overall for the gray and red, because Houston Christian wins at 16 to 2.
The three road games for the Colonels, three losses, five total points.
Nothing on offense tonight.
It was a safety.
Jordan Smith nine catches for a buck 12.
As I mentioned next game for the Colonels.
They have a bye week and then they will host Stephen F Austin.
Northwestern State head coach Blaine McCorkle says despite what you might think, he's seeing some improvement with this team.
The problem is it's a little here, a little there.
Well, it's a tall task to try to put it all together on Saturday because they were on the road in Beaumont, Texas, taking on top 15.
Lamar, who has really, really been playing well, let's take you out to Beaumont and show you how this one turned out between the demons and the Cardinals there as McCorkle on the sideline two minutes into the ballgame.
Second play from scrimmage for Lamar Jojo Briggs three.
And he's gone 45 yards on the touchdown.
And just like that at seven nothing Lamar Zach Wilkie once again gets the start at quarterback for the demons.
He's looking right side here to amaze Eugene.
And he finds a beautiful pass across the field 28 yards as he finds a little seen before he walks out of bounds.
At least to this.
Now it's a fourth and two, but Wilkie backing up, gets enough air on it to Brenden Webb for the touchdown.
It's tied at seven.
Lamar though is the definition of quick strike.
Third play of the next drive Aiden McCown scrambles finds Damien McDowell who somehow found a big hole in the defense.
And he takes it all the way.
37 yards.
It's 147 Cardinals now.
Early second quarter fourth and four Wilkie to Donald Rose who gets popped and the ball comes free ruled incomplete.
Lamar takes over.
This time it's a four play drive.
Parker Jenkins on the run.
Look at the gap in the middle.
And he outruns everybody 39 yards for the end zone.
It's 217 Lamar on top.
Next possession.
How about one play.
McCown unloads from 50 yards Blake Thomas is waiting for it on the other end.
So we'll make it two plays.
McCown to Thomas again.
The connection on both plays for six points is 28 to 7.
Under two minutes to go in the half.
The demon defense looked like it had McCown in trouble.
But he finds his way out of it.
The scapes everything and gets inside the pylon.
Just under two minutes to go.
It's 357 Lamar now 42.
Seven in the third.
Watch the quickness here of Omar takes the pass.
Quick spin between two defenders.
Cycles his way out of it.
Breaks a tackle.
And there he goes 47 yards.
Great catch and run right there.
And that's going to set up a touchdown on the second player of the fourth quarter.
It's Zay Davis from 24 yards out.
He has been one of the consistent highlights for the demons on the season.
Gets it in the end zone.
Unfortunately as has been the story.
Too little too late for the demons who lose it 42 to 14 Wilkie throws for 206 third down conversions for the demons just two of 16.
Lamar only had six third downs on the entire game.
They'll take a week off back in action for the demons and two weeks at home against McNeese.
Well, unlike this time last year, the raging Cajuns from Louisiana have not been suffering injuries.
They had injuries throughout the lineup one year ago, but this year they've been healthy.
It's a big reason why they're four and one.
They were heading into conference play Saturday night against Arkansas State.
These two teams pick number two Louisiana and number three Arkansas State.
In terms of the preseason polls in the Sun Belt Western Division, is Mike Michael Decimal coming in with the team on game day morning?
We focus on how good this Cajuns defense has been.
Check out the play by Nana Burris third and three.
What a breakup pass to stop the drive and not allow the Red Wolves the first down.
Cajuns have it on the 31 of the Red Wolves Darrell Smith those 13 yards.
But he can't go 14 because he fumbled.
And Arkansas State recovers after the defense holds again.
Watch lunch Winnfield at quarterback.
Rolls right, gets absolutely crushed on the hit, but somehow puts this ball on target to wade 36 yards on the completion.
Three plays later, Winfield is not feeling any a section that hit three yards out.
He's in the end zone and it's seven nothing.
Raging Cajuns seven three near the end of the second quarter, and it looks like this trail pass is going to get picked off.
But somehow he threads at the Hunter summers for 24 yard completion with a minute and a half to go.
That led to a 21 yard touchdown pass to Jalen Benelli, and the Red Wolves have the ten seven lead on the road at the break.
Third quarter Tony Sterner ties the game at ten from 30 yards out, 38 yards out.
Remember that hash?
Remember that angle okay first play of the fourth quarter JJ Gardner from 13 yards out.
And it's 1713.
Rage in cages Solomon Baggett then is going to cap a seven play drive with a six yard touchdown.
That makes it 20 to 17 Red Wolves.
It's 20 to 20 after the Cajuns tied it up three seconds to go.
Remember that right hash.
Remember that angle.
Remember that kicker Tony.
Tony.
Tony.
He's done it again from 37 yards out at the buzzer.
Nails the field goal.
And the Cajuns walk away a winner in their conference opener at home 23 to 20.
Perfect eight for eight between these two teams in the red zone total yards Louisiana had 435 to 293 for Arkansas State.
Louisiana travels up to Ruston next weekend to welcome Louisiana Tech to the Sun Belt Conference in a conference game.
Here's Michael Decimal after the ball game.
We got to stop when we needed it, forced to punt.
It was a great punt.
And then, you know, obviously we put together a drive to get down there in a field goal range.
And and Tony came through and finish it off.
So you know there's going to be a lot of things that we want to do better on this tape when we go back and watch it.
But you know, overall, you know, you got to be happy when you start out one and zero in your division.
You know, we're still chasing a lot of things right now.
We're still chasing six wins.
We're chasing the Western Division.
And, you know, as long as you keep winning, you control your destiny.
And that's what we've got to keep doing.
With all of the homecomings taking place around the state, congratulations to Louisiana Christian.
It was homecoming Saturday night.
Once again, they put up 50 on the scoreboard as they beat East Texas Baptist 50 to 36.
They had 30 more plays at ATB, E.J.
Scott, ten catches for 121 yards.
Next up for Louisiana Christian against Texas Wesleyan at home.
And that is a recap of week five.
We have a lot of our Southland Conference teams on a break next weekend, but we still have a lot of action and we'll talk about it Saturday morning on game.
