And it's our pleasure to welcome you to post game notes here on LP.
As we close out week six of the college football season.
I'm Victor Howell.
Great to have you with us.
We had four teams on a buy this week, but that does not mean we are short of any action we had over the weekend.
We'll focus on all of the big games, including the disappointment up in Lexington for the LSU Tigers.
And how about the two big wins for our HBCU teams?
One on the road, one at home.
But let's start tonight's program with the big game that took place up in Ruston for the debut of Louisiana Tech in the Sun Belt Conference.
And how do you make a big debut against an in-state rival?
Of course, the Sun Belt Conference, you know, they had something to do with this, bringing the raging Cajuns from Lafayette up I-49 to take on the Bulldogs, a series that Louisiana Tech has owned as of late.
Let's take you out to the jail and show you how things played out on Saturday night.
What a great atmosphere.
This game wound up being every bit that you could want for an instant rival, and a debut in the new conference for Louisiana Tech.
The teams traded drives early in the first quarter.
Let's go.
Late first quarter Blake Baker back in at quarterback.
He was injured several weeks ago, but he's back in at the start.
One.
The tail is set on 21 yards.
Same drive.
First play of the second quarter.
And here's your trivia question answer to who scored the first touchdown in Sun Belt Conference play for Louisiana Tech.
Eli Finley seven.
Nothing.
After a ten play, 85 yard drive, it took five minutes for the tech.
Next drive for the cage.
The Bulldogs.
Well, they showed them with gifts.
First, it's a 15 yard facemask penalty against lunch.
Winnfield, then two plays later, 15 yards for roughing the passer as lunch.
Winnfield takes the late hit.
That's 30 yards down the field.
Very next play.
Let's throw another flag.
This time.
It doesn't have to do with lunch.
Winnfield.
It has to do with the receiver.
Even though it looks like the ball was overthrown.
Flag comes in for pass interference.
45 free yards courtesy of the Bulldog defense.
And that leads to this with Winfield making them pay from seven yards out.
Once he heads to the corner, you're not going to get him.
And we're tied at seven, ten seven Cajuns now under two minutes to go in the half.
Baker to Jalen Mickens.
What a great catch and score for the Bulldogs.
And it's 1310.
Let's go.
Third quarter first and ten.
Now for the Cajuns.
Winfield looking right and unloads to Wade.
If he would have thrown it ahead of him he might have gotten more yardage.
But he gets 43 on the completion.
Two plays later J.J.
Garner takes it 20 yards for the score and the cages are now up 1713.
Five minutes to go in the third and the Cajuns force a Bulldog mistake at the Cajun.
17 Sergio Schneider coughs it up and Fitzgerald West gets the recovery for the raging Cajuns and they would take advantage.
Trenton Chaney he takes it in from 25 yards out up the middle cashes it in for six.
And the Cajuns have a 2413 lead early fourth quarter.
Jalen Mickens gets in.
He's on the move and keeps moving.
Three yards on the end around the two point conversion.
It's no good.
So it's 2419.
Third play into the very next drive Winfield place pitch and catch with Wade 45 yards as Wade is behind the entire Bulldog defense.
It's 3119 raging Cajuns with 11 minutes to go.
But tech doesn't cave in.
Just under four minutes to play.
Look at Blake Baker scramble.
Avoid getting sacked and then takes it into the end zone.
12 yards on the score.
It's 3126.
Bulldogs down by five.
Three plays and just 10s later because of timeouts on a third and five Trenton chain he gets stopped.
So the cages have to punt.
And with under a minute to go on third and three, Baker finds Mr.
Reliable Eli Finley in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown.
It's 3231.
One last chance for the Cajuns.
But lunch wind fields pass across the middle on third and ten sales and is picked off by Jordan McRae with the interception.
And Louisiana Tech makes it Sunbelt debut with a one point win over Louisiana, 3231.
The Bulldogs outscored the Cajuns, 197, in the fourth quarter.
Next up for the Raging Cajuns at home and a huge win against Troy for Louisiana Tech.
They'll drive 30 minutes east down I-20 to take on you all.
Monroe.
Here's Sonny Cumbie after the ballgame.
You know, there's not many times as you get to write your own history, and this is the first season for us to play as a football program in the Sun Belt.
And there's going to be a lot there's seven more games ahead of us.
So not by any means is this not a finished product.
And there's a lot of things that we have to correct and get better at.
But with seven more to go, they're going to all come down to one score games into the game and fourth quarter.
But really proud of our players, how hard they played the first half.
And really, you know, we did not play a very clean game.
We didn't play our best in terms of smart winning football, and it was actually the opposite and it continued into the second half.
You know you look at how we, you know, the drives in offense and how they went and really how they ended.
And I mean, it was really hard to us to get out of our own way.
And with eight minutes to go in the game, when we were down, they talked to our coaches on defense and offense on the headsets is we're going to find out in these next eight minutes the type of football team that we have, and it's just really proud of how we were able to get a quick three and out.
We scored, get another stop.
We go down there and score and then we get interception in the game and just was just a great win in this league.
To get off being one and zero.
Want to know towards the Governor's Cup and Coach Das has done a phenomenal job.
And in terms of building that program.
And so it was a great team win.
And I'm looking forward to, you know, putting this in the bed tonight.
You know, learning, you know, from the things that we've got to correct and being even better next week.
Blake Baker threw for 319.
And tech had two wide receivers that each had more than 100 yards receiving, with their ninth straight win in the series and 49th overall.
The Bulldogs positioned themselves nicely in the Western Division, but still a lot of football left.
They'll head down.
I 20 East next week to face you, old Monroe.
You see where Louisiana's position in next week?
It's that big game when they host Troy over Our Lady Lourdes Stadium.
And you know how big that game will be.
Well, before that night game at the Joe on Saturday in the afternoon, just two exits down I-20, that's where we find Grambling.
And the Tigers hosted a huge one with two of the better teams in the HBC in the country, facing off the Grambling Tigers and the Tigers from Jackson State, who rolled into North undefeated.
Grambling had their number as of late.
And you thought last week was wild against Alcorn, so was this one.
Let's take you the highlights and show you how this one played out with this Tiger tangle.
It's 2121 at the half.
But note this just before halftime, Jackson State's quarterback Jared Lockhart gets hit and sandwiched.
He would limp off of the field, be carted off, and would not return.
So Caron Tyler takes over.
Just keep that in mind going into the second half.
They're down their starting quarterback.
It's 2421.
In the third quarter Jackson stayed up top.
Jacoby Robinson on third and five hits Byron Eaton for seven yards.
Later its third and five again when Robinson hits Nissan Dickerson for seven to keep the drive going, and the drive ends with a touchdown when Robinson finds Patrick Williams the second from seven yards out and you see the big man get into the end zone, and that puts Grambling up top 28 to 24.
Very end of the third quarter.
Caron Tyler back to pass.
Looks right.
The ball lands in the hands Lewis Foster it's deflected at the line and foster gets the interception.
Take another look from behind Tyler.
You'll see the deflection here.
And it's basically just a floating duck up in the air.
Two Tigers are there for the interception but it's foster that brings it down.
And the Growling Tigers want to take advantage.
Second play of the fourth quarter.
Jacoby Robinson is going to let this one fly.
And Murphy brings it in.
And he scores from 54 yards out.
The G-Men up 3524.
Next series big play for Jay State when they needed it the most.
Tyler to Jesse Riley.
It's just a short screen pass.
But look at Riley go 39 yards down the sideline as he gets brought down at the seven yard line.
And just a few plays later, it's the same combo from seven yards out Tyler to Riley.
Touchdown 3531.
Grammy's lead is back down to just four after a three and out for the home standing Tigers.
Jay state strikes again Pryor up the middle and he goes 79 yards.
Almost gets it to the end zone.
But at the end of the play right here you'll see the face mask and the horse tackle.
So collar tackle.
So they bring him even closer to the goal line.
Next play.
That's Pryor again three yards out.
And Jay State once again grabs the lead 3835 under two minutes to go Robinson to Nissan.
Dickerson 30 yards and look at the great catch despite the pass interference he makes the catch and he's down at the two very next play DeShawn Ford with the touchdown.
And now it's 4238.
Remember the state's coach earlier this week said we heard him on game host I hope that don't score 60 again like they did against Alcorn.
Well it's getting close.
It's 4238.
First play of the next drive.
Remember the backup quarterback is in.
He makes his second mistake.
Tyler's pass is picked off.
Marcellus Johnson gets the interception for Grambling.
And the Grambling Tigers get a huge win over number three Jackson State 45 to 38.
They outscored Jay State 38 to 24, in the final three quarters.
Robinson throws for two, 12 and four touchdowns.
It's the third straight win in the series for Grambling, who next week will be on the road at Alabama A&M.
Well, it's time now for our LSU portion of the program and might want to keep your head on a swivel.
Make sure Tiger fans aren't throwing anything out of frustration.
The number ten Tigers making their way to Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday, a place they don't visit all that often in a place that they quite honestly, they haven't had a lot of luck as of late.
They were taking on the upset minded Kentucky Wildcats, who last week won a game in overtime, going for a two point conversion.
We'll see how these things would play out.
Lane Kiffin looking for his first road win.
Remember, the only other road game was that lost at Ole Miss.
Third and six here for LSU.
A sign of things to come in the quarter.
Offsides for LSU, who had five penalties in the first quarter alone.
LSU would get a field goal, but on the first play from scrimmage on the next drive for Kentucky, CJ Baxter up the middle against the number one rated defense in the SEC.
77 yards on that run.
Great hustle by P.J.
woodland to stop him.
But on the very next play it didn't matter.
Baxter punches it in and it's seven three Kentucky after a penalty, made it second and 12 for LSU.
Sam Leavitt hits Winston Watkins.
This is good for 14 yards.
Just outside of the 40 yard line as the Tigers looking to make the drive continue.
Now second and five or second and 15 rather from the 22.
Grace finds himself wide open for the touchdown.
Beautiful play call.
The coaching booth loves it.
And LSU is up ten seven early second quarter.
Grant Chadwick with a 37 yard punt.
Brock Kaufman gets a 55 yards away and decides I'll take all those yards.
And then some.
Look at them.
Stiff arm.
Two tacklers tiptoes the sideline.
Now he's got a caravan of blue jerseys and you can forget about it.
55 yards on the return after all of those missed tackles.
And it's 1410 Wildcats.
Lane Kiffin stunt next drive for LSU on fourth and one.
Darling Jones takes it 14 yards.
Great gain.
And he gets it inside the ten yard line.
Two plays later Sam Leavitt to Jackson Harris look at the hit.
Take another look at the concentration by Harris.
With the two Wildcats coming it looked like it might have been targeting.
They waved the targeting off because the helmet hits the shoulder pads.
But nonetheless Harris makes an incredible catch in its 1714 LSU three seconds to go.
Fourth and one Kenny Mincey on the keeper stopped.
Nobody's moving.
Where's the whistle?
Here comes the official.
He's still looking.
They're still pushing.
Touchdown Lane Kiffin said later.
The official told him there was too much at stake for them to blow the whistle too early, whatever that means.
So they get the score and it's 2117.
Fourth quarter.
A little razzle dazzle Leavitt to Jackson.
Harris to Roman mother shed for the touchdown.
Lane Kiffin loves it.
His Tigers back up by three.
Same score.
Under two minutes to go.
Huge play LSU needs ten.
Sam Leavitt hits Winston Watkins.
He gets nine.
Are they going to go for it.
Are they going to punt.
They call timeout.
They discussed it.
Lane Kiffin decides punt.
So with 16 seconds to go after two field goals one to the left and one to the right.
Kentucky gets the field goal to go to overtime.
LSU gets the ball first in overtime and on the second play, Leavitt from 15 yards out, a little hesitation and a burst to the end zone.
3427 LSU is on top.
Kentucky, of course, gets its turn and on its fifth play.
CJ Baxter from one yard out.
Punches it in and the sideline wastes no time.
We're going for two.
Just like last week when they came back and won it.
The offense has spread out.
The defense spreads with them.
And look at the parting of the seas.
Kenny Mincey strolls into the end zone.
And that's your ball game.
It's the first overtime game for LSU since Ole Miss in 24, and they stay winless on the road since October of 243534 is your final.
Kentucky runs for a buck 55 against the SEC.
Number one defense as LSU comes home next Saturday for an early kickoff for homecoming against Mississippi State.
Afterwards, here's LSU head coach Lane Kiffin.
This morning.
All three phases of the game could have could have won this game.
Starting special teams with the punt return for a touchdown.
If you don't execute, you don't execute the punt return.
Got a player there tackling them and doesn't tackle them you know.
And and it goes outside and you know the long run.
You know we get out of a gap and ball goes for long run.
So you don't do fundamentally sound stuff.
You get exposed versus good teams.
You know we got a chance.
I got told him before the game man chance comes in the fourth quarter.
You can't let them hang around.
You know we had the ball ahead.
And then we turned the ball over and did another chance to end it there.
And you know so they don't get it back.
Obviously things go the other way.
You know go get yourself first.
And you know talk about going for a fourth and one and then talk myself out of it of, you know, the way that their kicker had missed two field goals already and that we'd punt them deep and play defense.
And obviously, you know, in that worst scenario, we even if they drove down and made it that we'd go to overtime.
And that's what happened.
And, you know, we're one yard away from the game being over, you know, on the third and ten, nine yards.
Yeah.
I'm not going to overreact because, you know, from covering because of that.
I mean, it could be as simple as the coin toss going the other way.
And, you know, and they they score first and don't go for two, you know, and then we go for two.
So I'm not going to overreact.
We got all these problems.
But at the same time, you know, so many opportunities to close the game out and finish it after, you know, some bad things in the first half.
Going going the other way.
I mean, this I just told them, you know, this goes on to all of us.
So we had all kinds of chances to close the game out, win the game and didn't do it.
And you know, let people hang around on the road at night and SEC.
That's going to happen.
He talked himself out of going for it on fourth and one to put the game away.
Well, this isn't what Tiger fans expected to see in the SEC standings.
Just three weeks in with LSU sitting in the right column, George is the last remaining undefeated team after beating Alabama Saturday night on the road.
See the teams in orange.
Those are the remaining opponents for the Tigers this season.
So you can see with two losses, it is going to be a long, challenging road for the purple and gold to get into the playoff positioning come end of November.
The Lions from southeast and back off the by week on the road facing the.
What a gorgeous site and stadium for football in the S and Southland Conference.
Frank looking for his team to pick up where they left off.
They were on a roll before the by week.
Well Kyle Low hits Tristan Goodly early on.
Sheds a tackle.
It's a 35 yard gain but the drive stalls on fourth and seven.
Drew Talley from 48 yards.
Oh he's got the distance.
He just missed it to the right.
But Carroll's goes three and out.
So next Lions possession Kyrie Paul on the end.
Around 14 yards.
And once again good position.
Once again the drive stalls this time from 50.
Oh oh.
Two chances two missed field goals for the Lions.
Second quarter fourth and one now from the 26.
No faith in the kicking game.
So we passed into Kai Joseph and the ball just bounces out of his hands.
And now Frank is getting frustrated.
End of the half Kyle Low looking to his right.
And he's picked off by TJ Neal.
And the Rose would take advantage.
Bryson Gardner from 51 yards out at the buzzer to end the half.
And it's good.
Missed opportunities in the half of the Lions.
But they only trail by three.
Let's go.
Second half under four to play in the third.
This time from the middle of the field we're back to the kicker.
And drew tally from 36 is good.
We're tied at three points.
Hard to come by in this ball game.
Start of the fourth.
It's Gardner again this time from 36 yards.
It's just six three.
We've played three quarters and change.
Biggest chance yet for the Lions.
Third and five from the five.
Low goes through the air.
And he's picked off for the second time Jayden Haygood steps in front of this one.
And it's a huge play for the defense.
Third and six now as they drive the field on the Lions 16 Aidan Jacobson to James Smith corner of the end zone.
That's a touchdown.
And now that's a problem for the Lions.
Down 133 a minute 30 to go.
You need two scores.
You have to make something happen Lowe's pass sails high.
Third interception of the night TJ Neal with his second interception of the ball game.
And that seals the deal.
The Lions offense that was playing so well two weeks ago can't come back from the by and pick up where they left off.
The are still undefeated in their home stadium since they stepped up to Division one ball and joined the Southland Conference 133 as your final low throws for 198 and three picks.
Three southeastern turnovers lead to ten points in a game that was decided by ten points next week.
The host Lamar, for homecoming.
Well, if there's one thing we've learned on the bluff with first year head coach Marshall Faulk at Southern, he's an honest man.
He has not held back on sharing his frustrations as of late, trying to find consistency within his team, whether it's special teams or the play of offensive defense.
This past weekend, he was looking for consistency when his team went on the road to take on purview, and that's a good thing.
Southern has been very successful on the road at purview as of late.
Look at Marshall Faulk frustrated.
Who knew?
But he'd like the way this game would play for the rest of the afternoon.
Had it like this early on.
Third and six from the own 25 yard line.
Christian Johnson, suspended last week back in the starting role at quarterback, hits Jason Harris, junior.
And that's a 49 yard game.
But the drive stalls.
And that meant it was time for the kicking game.
And we know Faulk has not been happy with the kicking game, and he's not happy with that.
Chris McKenna no good on the field goal attempt.
End of the first quarter.
No need to worry about the kicking game on this one.
Christian Johnson to Damien Henderson 69 yards for the touchdown.
And the Jags have the seven nothing lead four minutes into the second quarter.
On third and 15, Chase Bingaman pinball his way in for 21 yards down to the five and watch how he waits.
Finds an opening missed tackle there.
Miss tackle there.
One more of a finalist for him before he's finally brought down at the five and the next play, he caps it off with a five yard touchdown.
And just like that, we are tied at seven missed chances for both teams at the end of the half.
Let's start with southern.
Fourth and two from the five.
No confidence again in the kicking game.
So they go for it.
And Trey Holley is stood up.
So the ball goes back to purview.
Who drives the length of the field.
First missed opportunity to Carter to Rodney Ojo.
But the ball doesn't cross the line.
He's in the end zone but the ball's not.
So next play at the one yard line.
They're going to push it in.
But watch the tag defenders.
They all start saying we have the ball.
I'd like a closer look please.
And I'm going to give it to you and watch center left of your screen right there.
The ball does pop out before it crosses the goal line, even though the player did.
Jags get the ball.
Huge stop for southern.
Were tied at seven at the half.
First play of the third quarter.
Tevin Carter to Damien McDaniel.
And look at him weave his way down the field 48 yards for the touchdown.
Prairie view now has its first lead of the day 147.
But after that it's all Jags later in the third.
Carter looking left.
Mike Franklin gets the interception in front of the Jaguar bench.
And with under two to go in the quarter.
Southern Christian Johnson to Damien Henderson.
Watch a drop back looking right.
Lets it rip.
And he has wide open.
Doesn't let the sun get in his eyes.
Makes the catch from 46 yards out.
And we're tied at 14 midway through the fourth quarter.
Trey Holly you can slow him down but you couldn't stop him on this day.
He breaks through right side 30 yards a 13 play drive in six minutes.
The Jag nation thrilled previous coach not so much.
One minute to go.
Needing a touchdown to tie Carter back to pass.
And Herman Brister the third.
Never allowed it to happen.
He read that play the whole way.
47 yards to the house.
The Jags get the win on the road and extend that winning streak at Prairie View 28 to 14.
As the final.
Holly carries for a buck 21.
In the touchdown Prairie you had four turnovers for 14 Jaguar points in a game decided by.
You see why this is so important to coaches.
Next up for southern.
They've got the bye week and in two weeks they'll be back on the road and back in the state of Texas when they play at Texas Southern.
Four games into the season, Tulane has two home wins, two road losses.
After the by week they were back on the road, the cadets ready to go as Tulane opened up conference play against Army.
Remember Army coming off of a loss one week ago in Ruston to Louisiana Tech.
Opening drive for the wave.
Kaden Simmons to Destin Hill on second and seven.
Got 11 yards.
Then on second and 12.
Same connection, this time for 17.
But the drive stalls at the 33 on first and ten when Simmons is picked off by Caleb Williams.
And you don't want Army to have the ball.
They're the best in the conference.
Top five in the country in ball possession time.
And let's meet Kale Helms.
He's the quarterback that runs this outstanding Army offense on the keeper here.
It's good up the middle for eight.
Then it's Helms again.
This time he goes right side for leader.
First and ten from the 27.
How about 15 for Helms as he breaks through the middle of the tackle.
Gets it down to the 12.
And then on third and one Helms punches it in 12 plays 74 yards 634 off the clock at seven.
Nothing.
Army second quarter third and goal from the three Simmons it to Dawson Johnson.
And it's just out of his reach.
Can't bring it in.
So they settle for the field goal.
Army has the four point lead.
Let's go.
Third quarter again.
Points hard to come by in this one.
Third and ten for Caden Samantha down the middle.
Hits Anthony Brown Stephens for 16 yards on a third and ten.
That keeps it going.
They get it.
First and goal from the one.
And Samantha punches it in 12 plays 68 yard.
Great drive by the wave.
It's ten seven Tulane now 1010 in the fourth.
Samantha to Jaylen Lucas who had a head start coming left.
And he just keeps on going 39 yards down the sidelines three plays to go 58 yards.
It's 1710.
Two lane as fast as they took the lead.
Army timed it.
And who else.
Helms through the middle patiently waiting.
And now he's gone 58 yards up the middle two lanes.
And they're not going to get him.
And we're tied at 17 on second and eight.
Johnny Daniels out of the shotgun gets the handoff.
And look at the opening in the middle of the field 41 yards.
If he doesn't get slowed down there he might take it to the house.
But the drive does stall.
Fourth and eight with under four minutes to play.
Samantha, Enzo.
Dawson.
Johnson.
Oh, it comes up short.
Take another look and watch.
Defender number three.
Bottom of your screen.
Never turns around.
Plows over a receiver.
No interference call.
So Tulane gives up the ball and they don't get it back.
Helms on second and seven keeps it for 17 yards.
Two seconds to go.
Dawson Jones from 25 yards out.
Smack middle of the field.
And that's it.
Army goes home a winner at the buzzer.
20 to 17 is the final.
Helms on the day rushes for 223 and two touchdowns.
Army had the ball for more than 35 minutes in this ballgame.
Next game for Tulane.
It's a Friday night affair at home against Memphis.
Here's Will Hall and players after the game.
Early on on.
Offense we have to make plays.
We're not talking about making a windmill dunks and free run homer talking about making layups.
You know we gotta make our layups early because you can get a lead on a team like this.
It changes the way they play.
Yeah we had them.
I mean there was a the plays were to be made and I didn't make them.
So this one's on me today.
I didn't get the job done.
When it, when it counted.
So Couple drops in the first half.
No, no, I mean.
Just.
The people in here and say what they want about the drops.
The receiver started making plays.
And like I just said, when it was my time to go to go win the football game, I didn't do that.
This hurts.
But I know we have a 24 hour.
