Karen> I wish Dad was here with us.
Mom> You know he can't be here.
Karen.
Dad lives a long way from here.
Now that he and I are divorced.
Karen> But he's still my father, and he didn't even send me a birthday present.
Mom> We don't know that, Karen.
Maybe he's sending you something in the mail.
The mail hadn't come when we left the apartment.
Your father has never forgotten anyone's birthday.
Karen> Maybe he did remember me.
(engine cuts off) Karen> Don't drop my cake, Dennis.
Dennis> I won't.
If I dropped it, then I couldn't have another piece.
Mom> Have you got all your presents, Karen?
Dennis> There's another one on the back seat, Karen.
You sure did make quite a haul on presents.
I wish I had that many new toys.
Karen> Well, it isn't your birthday.
It's mine.
I wonder what dad sent me.
Dennis> Mom, she got all these gifts and she wants more.
Mom> Well, Dennis, she's young and she doesn't really appreciate all she has.
I just hope your father didn't forget her birthday.
She'd be so hurt if he did.
Karen> There's nothing here but letters.
Dad forgot my birthday.
Mom> Okay, wait a minute.
Here's a card from your dad.
He didn't forget, after all.
Karen> A card?
He sent me a check, Mom.
Look.
Mom> $20 dollars.
Dennis> Wow.
$20 dollars.
You're rich, Karen.
Karen> What should I buy with?
Dennis> What else is there for her to buy?
♪ Dennis> Karen, what are you doing?
Karen> Trying to decide how to spend my birthday money.
Dennis, what would you buy with $20 dollars?
Dennis> I'd buy a new shirt, then use the rest of it to go to the ball game.
Karen> I don't want to go to an old ball game.
Dennis> Well, you asked me what I'd buy.
I'm not you.
I'm a boy and I'm older.
I like different things than you would like.
Karen> I guess so.
Dennis, What would you buy if you were me?
Dennis> If I were you, what would I buy?
Let me think.
I'm an eight year old girl and have a lot of new toys What would I want?
what would I need?
Karen> Dennis, I'm serious.
I don't know what to buy.
Dennis> Let's look at the catalogs and see what you don't have.
that you would like to have.
Karen> Okay.
Dennis> One thing you need to remember is that next week is mom's birthday.
We'll have to get her something nice.
Karen> I have to spend my birthday money on a gift for someone else?
That's not fair.
Dennis> Mom spends her money on us, doesn't she?
Mom has had a hard time since she and Dad divorced.
She spends all the money she makes.
Are you going to be stingy and refuse to spend some of your money on her?
Karen> No.
Dennis> We'll go shopping together tomorrow, and get mom a present and buy you something too.
How about this?
♪ Mom> My daughter has a check she'd like to cash.
Teller> Do you have an account with us?
Mom> Yes, I do.
Teller> Okay, I'll be glad to do it.
Are you Karen?
Karen> Yes.
Teller> Okay.
You're going to have to endorse this.
Just write your name on the back of it.
Right there.
♪ That shows that you've cashed it and that you've gotten money for it.
♪ 10, 15, 20.
That's a lot of money.
Karen> My dad sent it to me for my birthday.
Teller> Well, if you'd like to open a savings account with it, I'll be glad to help you.
Karen> I think I'm going to spend most of it, but if I have any left, I might save it.
Mom> Thank you.
♪ ♪ ♪ Karen> This is the dress I want, Mom.
It's a dream.
Mom> Well, if that's what you want, Karen.
It's $15 dollars.
That leaves you $5 dollars in birthday money.
Karen> Birthday money?
I don't want to spend my birthday money on the dress.
I thought you were going to buy it for me.
Mom> Oh, no.
This is something you want.
Therefore, you have to pay for it with your money.
Karen> But you always buy my dresses.
I buy you dresses, you need.
Dresses, you have to have.
Karen, you have some new dresses at home that your aunt sent you.
You don't need this one.
Karen> But those dresses aren't as pretty as this one.
I want this dress.
Mom> You know, we have a budget that shows where our money is spent.
This dress isn't on my budget.
I can't afford to buy this dress just because you want it.
If you really needed it, I'd find a way to get it for you.
If you really want this dress, you have more than enough money to get it yourself.
Karen> But I want to buy toys with my money.
Mom> Then buy the toys and forget the dress, but remember, Karen, money doesn't grow on trees.
Dennis> I'll go with Karen and help her spend the money.
I won't let her waste it.
Mom> Okay.
I've got some shopping to do, for things that we need.
Meet me outside the grocery store in one hour.
Dennis> Okay, mom.
Karen> I don't see any difference in wanting something and needing it.
♪ ♪ Last year's pants ♪ don't even touch ♪ ♪ the top of your shoes.
♪ ♪ You've worn the knees on ♪ every pair you wear to school.
♪ ♪ Your old shoes don't nearly ♪ fit the size of your feet.
♪ ♪ The heels are worn ♪ insoles don't ♪ ♪ keep your feet ♪ off the street.
♪ ♪ We must replace these things ♪ because they're things ♪ ♪ we need.
♪ ♪ Your mother always spends ♪ her money buying your food.
♪ ♪ She remembers all the ♪ proper food you need.
♪ ♪ You must plan these things ♪ ♪ ♪ because their ♪ things you need.
♪ ♪ But, oh, you'd rather ♪ have that basketball ♪ ♪ or a fine tennis racket.
♪ ♪ There's so many to choose.
♪ ♪ You could even buy a ♪ fancy red sweatsuit.
♪ ♪ But you don't need a tennis ♪ racket or a basketball.
♪ ♪ You better get the clothes ♪ that you need for school.
♪ ♪ ♪ There may be a time ♪ ♪ for a wedding dress, ♪ ♪ but now you need shoes.
♪ ♪ ♪ Your old TV won't ♪ nearly do the things ♪ ♪ this one does, ♪ but you've got one TV.
♪ ♪ You don't need another.
♪ ♪ Better save your money ♪ for the things you need.
♪ ♪ Dennis> She buys that all the time doesn't she?
I got her this for Mother's Day.
Karen> Here Dennis this is the kind of perfume that mom likes.
Dennis> Are you sure?
We want to get gifts that mom would like?
Karen> How about this one?
It has bath powder and perfume.
It costs $5 dollars.
Dennis> Why don't you get this for Mom?
And I'll get her a pocketbook.
She said hers was broken.
Karen> Can we both go together and buy the perfume?
It wouldn't cost as much that way.
Dennis> Karen, you're being stingy.
Karen> I guess you're right.
I can afford to spend $5 dollars on mom's gift.
I'll even buy her a pretty car.
Dennis> We'll get the pocketbook first, then have the gifts wrapped.
We can stop and get the car on the way to the toy store.
Here we are, Karen.
You have a little bit more than $14 dollars left.
What are you going to buy?
Karen> I'll have to look some more.
♪ Dennis> How about this model plane?
I could help to put it together.
Karen> Oh, Dennis.
♪ These are pretty.
Dennis> Don't you have some of those?
Mine aren't as pretty as these are, besides mine are old.
Dennis> Don't buy something that you already have.
won't yours do the same thing these will do?
Karen> I guess mine are just as good as these are even if they aren't as pretty besides mine are really made of China, not tin.
♪ This is a new kind of doll.
I don't have one like it.
Dennis> Yeah, but don't you have lots of other dolls?
Karen> But I don't have this one.
Dennis> Karen, people who make dolls or anything else make new ones that look different, then people will buy them.
If all dolls are the same, then people wouldn't buy but one.
♪ Karen> I don't really want another doll.
Dennis, how much is this?
I've always wanted a jewelry box like this.
See the ballerina dance when you open the lid?
Dennis> It's only $5 dollars.
Karen> I'll buy this, and maybe a game the whole family can play.
Dennis> That's a good idea.
How about this one?
Karen> That looks like fun?
How much is it?
Dennis> It's on sale for $4 dollars.
Karen> I'll buy that and the jewelry box.
Let's see.
I spent $5 dollars on Mom's gift.
and $5 dollars on the jewelry box.
That's $10 dollars.
This is $4 dollars.
So, I'll spend $14 dollars of my birthday money That will leave me $6 dollars.
Dennis> Not quite.
Karen, you forget the tax.
What are you going to buy now?
Karen> I don't know I'll save it.
And maybe I'll get enough money for that dress, I want.
Dennis> If you save it, mom might give you some on it too.
Karen> You think so?
♪ ♪ You got a ♪ whole lot of money ♪ ♪ from your dad ♪ for your birthday.
♪ ♪ ♪ What will you buy ♪ ♪ from all the things ♪ they have in the stores?
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ You've looked ♪ at the dresses ♪ ♪ and seen ♪ what you wanted.
♪ ♪ But you ♪ don't buy it, ♪ ♪ cause it's not ♪ what you need.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Are toys what ♪ you really like, ♪ ♪ are toys what you need.
♪ ♪ The ones you have ♪ are good enough.
♪ ♪ You don't have to have these ♪ so you don't buy them, ♪ ♪ cause they're ♪ not what you need.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Get something ♪ for the family.
♪ ♪ Something you ♪ can all enjoy.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ You got a ♪ whole lot of money ♪ ♪ from your dad ♪ for your birthday.
♪ ♪ ♪ What did you buy ♪ ♪ from all the things ♪ they have in the stores?
