Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(soft music) - [Narrator] Hoarfrost is basically the winter equivalent of dew.
So we cool the air down and the gas, which is water vapor, goes directly from a gas to a solid.
And that's how we get hoarfrost.
And then there's also rime.
They both kind of look alike on the trees when you go outside after they occur, but rime is more associated with those days when we're stuck in the fog and those fog droplets, they need something to freeze upon.
It doesn't automatically freeze at 32, so it can either then hits a tree and automatically then, "Hey, this is something I can freeze upon."
And so we get this buildup of ice crystals from that.
(soft music) Hoarfrost comes from an old English term that I believe refers to "old" and like "old man's beard," kind of.
